Japan's War in Colour | 2004 Documentary with never seen before films
(c) Japan's War in Colour (2004), narrated by Brian Cox.
Japan's role in World War II gets a whole new perspective in this consisting entirely of full color footage, including color films from Japan that were recently discovered. As the visuals of the world war take on a new vivid immediateness, the story of the rise of the militarists in Japan is told through the personal writings of the Japanese themselves. From the first overconfident tastes of victory, to the devastating losses that led to an unthinkable defeat amidst the ruins, the Pacific Theater of World War II is told through the Japanese's eyes.
It was assumed no color films existed in Japan until the victorious U.S. forces arrived in 1945. Now you can discover the story of a nation at war from its rare color films, plus letters and diaries from those who lived through it. Almost all the material in this color documentary has been recently discovered and allows the viewer to expereince Japanese culture and events from an entirely new perspective. Subject matter includes Imperial Japanese troops in 1931 Manchuria, remarkable domestic scenes of 1930s Japan, preparation for war in 1939, and images of occupation in 1940s Shanghai.

She's near and dear to us and parked in Wargaming North America's backyard at the USS Hornet Aircraft Carrier Museum, located in Alameda, CA. This Essex-class carrier led a storied career in and out of combat: serving in WWII, deploying to Vietnam, and playing a key part in the Apollo space program.
The Hornet aircraft carrier is known as one of the luckiest of the American World War II ships. She sailed through 59 battles without any damage, and put an end to the history of the Japanese Imperial Navy.
Naval Legends is a series about the construction, service, and daring deeds of legendary 20th-century ships.

The Making of a Coat #3 - Striking the Pattern
Master tailor Rory Duffy shinks the cloth, chalks the pattern, and cuts the pieces for a handcraft bespoke suit coat.
[This video, and the accompanying text below, originally appeared on the menswear blog A Suitable Wardrobe.]
Like a blank canvas, uncut cloth is all purity and promise. Bespoke customers know the ancient ritual of having a tailor drape a few yards over their shoulder, luxuriating in the hand and fall of the material itself. It's a simple, primal pleasure recalling the historical role of cloth as treasure: a token and totem of wealth, the artisanal pride of nations.
Cloth today is more precious than it's ever been -- the 11oz wool flannel from Ariston Napoli we're using for the coat in the video costs $150 a yard -- which makes an efficient pattern lay extremely important. Pattern pieces must be laid lengthwise along the doubled cloth's grain, mindful of that grain's direction (more noticeable in highly textured cloth like velvet but always present) and the right (i.e. finished) and wrong sides of the cloth. The generous inlays which allow for bespoke garments to gracefully age with their owners require more cloth, as does good pattern-matching. Finally, a bespoke lay must account for material which will be shrunk away as part of the shaping process.
Once the pattern is laid on the cloth, it is struck by hand with tailor's chalk. Heavy bench shears (so named because the bottom blade never leaves the work surface) are then deployed in a series of deft and decisive motions which begins the cloth's transformation from commodity to clothing.

German Asia Corps In The Ottoman Empire During WW1 I THE GREAT WAR Special
German-Ottoman military cooperation predated World War 1 by a few decades. But their alliance during the First World War meant that German (and Austrian) troops would actually fight in and with the Ottoman Empire.
