When Buddha turned 80, he predicted in Vaishali (now in Bihar) on the day of Magha Purnima that he would attain Mahaparinirvana, the capital of Kushinagar - Malla three months later. All the pilgrimage sites of Kushinagar associated with the life of Buddha are concentrated in a small stop named Kasaya. Kushinagar is 50 km west of Gorakhpur and 20 km from Fazilnagar.

We have recently visited Kushinagar. Kushinagar is 53 km from Gorakhpur and one of the principal centers of the Buddhist pilgrimage is the place where Lord Buddha left and attained Mahaparinirvana
The monuments here are clustered in three groups – the Nirvana site, the central Stupa, the surrounding monasteries, Mathakuar Kot and Ramabhar Stupa and Buddah Sarovar.
Kushinagar/Land of Buddha Mahaparinirvan/Chinese Buddhist Temple
Kushinagar - 53 km from Gorakhpur, Kushinagar is one of the major centers of the Buddhist pilgrimage site, is the place where Lord Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana.
It attracts thousands of tourist from all over the world.
In the uniquely designed Mahaparinirvana temple is a huge statue of the reclining Buddha, excavated in 1876.

Ramabhar Stupa, Kushinagar is more than 50 feet high and stands on a high mound that faces the road. This road joins Kushinagar with Deoria. The Ramabhar Stupa, Kushinagar is built to mark the actual cremation site. From the ancient Buddhist texts one gets to know that the Ramabhar Stupa, Kushinagar has been referred to as the Mukut-Bandhan Vihar. Near the Ramabhar Stupa, Kushinagar, there is a sheet of water which is the Ramabhar Jheel that completely dries up in the hot summer months. According to the legends, the word Ramabhar might be derived from this pond or the mound. Some people even associate the name with the event of Lord Buddha’s death.
Along with the Ramabhar Stupa, Kushinagar there are interesting tourist places which attracts tourists from world over. Amongst the monuments and temples, one of the major tourist places is the Nirvana Temple. In the Nirvana Temple you can get a glimpse of the 6 meters long statue of Buddha. This is one of the sacred sites for the Buddhists. This is one of the unique images of Lord Buddha which shows him reclining on his right side which is just a few moments before his death. This is called the Bhumi Sparsha Mudra and from the inscriptions below we get to know that the statue was built on 5th century A.D. This is considered to be one of the important monuments in Kushinagar.
The Mathakaut Temple in Kushinagar also attracts tourists in Uttar Pradesh. The Watt Thai Temple is one of the most visited temples in Kushinagar. The Japanese temple is the Chinese temple with Oriental design and décor are also 2 beautiful temples in Uttar Pradesh which will also attract the tourists.
