Featuring commissioned projects and research, as well as six days of live talks, the Global Art Forum brought together a diverse line-up of participants, including artists, curators, musicians, strategists, thinkers and writers.
Founded and produced by Art Dubai, Global Art Forum was presented by the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture), and was held in partnership with Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art (Qatar Museums Authority).
In 2013, the seventh iteration of the Global Art Forum was directed by Istanbul based writer/editor HG Masters, and commissioned by writer/curator Shumon Basar. Entitled 'It Means This', the forum explored the concept of 'definitionism': investigating the words, terms, clichés and misunderstandings that proliferate in the art world and beyond. The Forum attempted to (re)define words, phrases and ideas we think we know, and those we need to know, to navigate the 21st century.

An Enchanted Evening Fashion Exchange at Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art
On 9 December 2013, Mathaf, Arab Museum of Modern Art in Doha hosted 'An Enchanted Evening', a first of its kind fashion display that had featured work by internationally recognized UK designers and emerging female fashion entrepreneurs from Qatar's Roudha Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The Fashion Exchange is part of the Qatar UK 2013 Year of Culture.
Doha had hosted designs by rising star of the Qatari fashion scene, Wadha Al Hajri (womenswear) and traditional womenswear by Elham Al Ansari, Fathiya Al Jaber and Hessa Al Mannai, the latter three of whom recently showcased their designs to much acclaim at London's Victoria and Albert Museum at The September Show. Their designs for 'An Enchanted Evening'were inspired by their time spent in London and the city's rich history and culture. All of the designers, who were selected by Roudha Center, represent the trailblazers and innovators of Qatar's burgeoning local fashion scene.
Celebrated British designers L'Wren Scott (couture womenswear), Stephen Jones OBE (milliner), Nicholas Kirkwood (footwear), Emilia Wickstead (women's ready to wear), and Robinson Pelham (jewellery), all respected leaders in the industry, joined forces with their Qatari counterparts.
In keeping with Qatar UK 2013's mission to foster cultural exchange and a better understanding of both countries' artistic practices, on 8 December, L'Wren Scott and Stephen Jones spoke to Virginia Commonwealth students and Roudha Center entrepreneurs, giving expert advice and guidance based on their long years of experience in the industry.
Qatar UK 2013's spirit of collaboration and exchange will continue into next year when designers and entrepreneurs from Qatar will participate in mentorship and internship programs with British designers arranged by Roudha Center and VCU.
Fashion Exchange is supported by VisitBritain, Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Doha, DHL Express Qatar, MATHAF Arab Museum of Modern Art, W Hotel and Qatar International Beauty Academy.

Qatar Museum of Modern Art
In this week's video I take a trip to the museum of modern art. This is one of the lesser known museums in Doha, but is a nice quick experience. There were several exhibits I really liked, and a few I wasn't that fond of (I find this with modern art). Some of the more interesting exhibits featured long carpets hanging from the ceiling, a 3D printed sculpture with projections and suspended floating birds.

The Arab Museum for Modern Art will emphasise a remarkable collection of contemporary art
Starting a collection by Sheikh Hassan Bin Mohammed Al-Thani, the museum's items were assembled ten years ago. Her Highness Sheikha Mozah sponsored the project which is part of the Qatar Foundation. It will be among Education City's facilities and will occupy a specifically -designed building in Doha. The museum will be accessible to the public as well as art specialists, where a large collection of modern art such as paintings, sculptures, calligraphy and photography will be displayed.
It will also provide an overview of the different contemporary artistic genres in the Arab world, in order to reveal links between different Arab societies, gathering the works of the Maghreb Arabs of north-west Africa artists alongside those of the Mashriq eastern Arabs.
Researchers, artists, art historians, students and local residents can access the museum which will stimulate creativity, educate about Arab culture, and promote art appreciation. Once housed in its permanent location, the museum will become an important tourist attraction to Qatar, in addition to being a center of excellence.
The collection will comprise more than 5,000 paintings, showing the development of plastic arts by renowned artists from the Arab world.
A special section will feature examples of Arabic calligraphy, the distinctive and exquisite art form which has influenced many contemporary Arab art forms. It ranges from Qur'anic manuscripts of early Islamic centuries to modern calligraphy.
More than 700 pieces of antiques, sculptures, metalwork and ceramics, will reveal the influence of ancient civilizations on contemporary Arab art, with some dating to 5,000 years. The collection will represent the civilizations of Mesopotamia, Arabia, Greater Syria, Egypt and other areas.
Other sections include sculptures, graphics, photography and applied arts.
