Hiking Matheson Lake: More than we Bargained for! Vlog 108
For show notes click on the link above
This past week Tim and I decided to take a day trip just out past Metchosin to Matheson Lake. We heard it was a nice walk around a pretty lake so we packed a lunch and headed out of Victoria.
It is a 45 minute drive from Victoria just past Metchosin. The trail goes around the circumference of Matheson lake. We started out on our hike and thought we were going to have to turn around. High winds and a cool day and Tim wearing shorts were not a good combination. However we persevered and once we got into the tree covered portion around the back of the lake, the sunshine warmed us up.
We have decided to start packing a lunch for our hikes. We find there is not usually too much around to eat at our hiking locations and we are usually gone for 4-6 hours, so we need some nourishment! Having a lunch with us and hydration makes all the difference. It is worth the extra weight in the back pack.
The second part of the hike around Matheson lake was more than we bargained for. There is more elevated climbing than we thought there was going to be. It is not too difficult, it is just that pretty much every hike in BC has some sort of incline. Don´t think you are ever going to get off easy, even on a hike around a lake.
The treasure trove of the day was the path that splits off from the hike around Matheson lake down Matheson Creek. The moss covered rocks in the creek were just beautiful. So beautiful in fact that we plan to return to Roche Cover Regional Park and walk the trail from the bottom of the creek to the top next week. :)
If you made it all the way to the end of the vlog put, ¨I love the hills in BC¨ in the comments. Thanks for all your support in the hiking vlogs. We love getting outdoors and making these vlogs for you.
Namaste, Melissa

Matheson lake flyfishing-Vancouver Island
I spend the morning Fly Fishing at Matheson lake on Southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Enjoy!
The Grouse Nest at Atwater Landing, 1424 Gillespie Road for sale in Sooke BC.
The Grouse Nest at Atwater Landing is a spectacular oceanfront sub-dividable estate encompassing 33.8 hectares on the well-protected Sooke Harbour. With nearly a kilometre of shoreline offering easy access to the fertile fishing waters of the Pacific Ocean, this west-facing property is the epitome of a West Coast wonderland. Old growth and Arbutus forest is dissected by a meandering creek; orcas, eagles and other spectacular wild life cohabitate nearby; the Galloping Goose Trail welcomes cyclists and hikers to traverse the property.
Situated on a prime sunbathed peninsula with south, west and north exposure, the European-style lodge is a legendary property whose history dates back to the 1930s. With your vision plus expert renovation and interior redesign, the 15,000-square foot, 12-bedroom lodge could be transformed into a lavish single-family home, a luxurious resort for retreats or fishing expeditions, or perhaps serve as a community centre to a more extensive development.
Grouse Nest is located in Sooke, a thriving bedroom community just 40km from downtown Victoria. The area is currently undergoing a boom of residential and commercial development. Sooke supports medium-density mixed-use development, offering many opportunities and possibilities for this property, including the addition of a marina.
The Area
The District of Sooke is the region’s southwestern gateway to Vancouver Island’s rugged West Coast. Hikers flock to the famed Juan de Fuca and West Coast Trails. Campers book years in advance for picture-perfect sites in the many provincial parks that dot the coastline as far west as Port Renfrew. Daytrippers explore East Sooke Park and Roche Cove Regional Park, while others cycle and trek the Galloping Goose. Swimmers relish the cool fresh waters of Sooke Potholes and Matheson Lake. Fishing enthusiasts drop crab traps and launch their vessels from the harbour, and whale-watching boats frequent the surrounding waters. Foodies and travel-trendsetters are lured to the region’s acclaimed restaurants and resorts. Sooke has developed a reputation as a prime destination for adventurers and eco-tourists seeking immersion in West Coast splendour.
The Potential
The area adjacent to this property has undergone extensive research as preparation for potential development including midden archaeological and environmental impact studies, servicing statistics, projected demographics, neighbourhood planning, marketing strategy, and much more. Topographical and other detailed information is available for your consideration.
Grouse Nest at Atwater Landing is offered at just 6.98 million Canadian, substantially below current market value for immediate sale. Development possibilities and subsequent profit potential are exponential for this one-of-a-kind opportunity to own a portion of authentic West Coast paradise. Start dreaming up your boundless vision and submit your offer by July 15th at 4 p.m.

An iconic canadian architectural monument perched upon a sprawling 67-acre oceanfront parcel at the southern end of Vancouver Island, minutes from British Columbia’s capital, Victoria. Punctuated by grand contemporary lines, the triumphant main residence is, according to it’s award-winning designer, Marko Simcic, “sustainably entwined” with its site in the heart of one of Canada’s most endangered natural ecosystems—the Garry Oak savannah.
Winner of the Canadian Architect Award in 2003 and a Lieutenant-Governor’s Award in 2008,
the 10,700 square foot main residence is cantilevered atop a concrete armature, rooting the structure clear of the critical tree root zones. With floors branching astride a canyon carrying spent hydro-thermal seawater framed by etched glass exterior walls, this innovative retreat blurs the boundaries of nature and shelter.
A sharp structural fold encloses an exterior pool and hot tub area which separates the social and private living spaces. Dynamically lit by strategically placed exterior and foot windows, reflections from the ocean and canyon river dance across hardwood floors and travertine walls. Panoramic views of 1,400 linear feet of shoreline and private beach are amplified by spectacular ocean views backed by the rugged Olympic Mountain range, while a fully automated boat launch and worldwide access to mechanical and electrical controls allow residents to remain connected while escaping to the sea with ease. Also Included on the gated property is a caretakers residence, garage with hydraulic lift, and tennis/basketball court.
Metchosin is a semi-rural community of rolling countryside laced with winding rural roads traversing cultivated acreages, rocky highlands, and forests along the shores of the Juan de Fuca Strait. This area is home to many migratory birds and teems with land and sea life. Nearby parks include Albert Head Lagoon, Witty’s Lagoon, Devonian Regional park, Matheson Lake Regional Park, Roche Cove Regional Park, and East Sooke Park. By imposing a minimum one and two acre lot size bylaw, urban style development has been limited by the local government in order to preserve the area’s pastoral character.
Nearby activities include golf at the Metchosin Golf Course, the Olympic View Golf Club, or one of 8 championship golf courses scattered about Victoria’s Capital Regional District, as well as equestrian facilities at one of a number of Metchosin clubs, or rides along the famous Galloping Goose Trail. This 100 kilometer multi-use trail links the Westshore communities of Sooke, Metchosin, Colwood, Langford, and View Royal to Victoria proper, offering cyclists, joggers, hikers, and riders a route through the the countryside to the city.
Surrounded by the Pacific Ocean, the Strait of Georgia and the Inside Passage, Vancouver Island is one of Canada’s finest island getaways. With its vast wilderness, picturesque peaks, temperate climate and fertile soil, this stunning locale is a paradise for those seeking serenity, natural beauty, and enchanting coastal communities.
Unlike much of Canada, Vancouver Island's weather is mild year-round. Spring comes early, with cherry blossom, tulip, and daffodil blooms lit by sparkling ocean sunsets. Summer is close behind, with the first sightings of migrating whales and local fishermen. In fall, a plethora of farms, vineyards, orchards, cideries, and breweries take local culinary culture to world-class levels. Come winter, cars loaded with kayaks, surfboards, paddle boards, skis, and snowboards come out to play, while golfers teeing off, and joggers taking to the trails remain common sights.
East Sooke Park Aylard Farm & Crekye Point
The trail leading to Creyke point is well-groomed and scenic. There is a drop off along the coastal shelf with a pebbly beach down below. Off the coast is Juan de Fuca Strait and the Olympic Mountains of Washington State.
This is one of the easiest hikes in East Sooke Park and takes only 40 minutes to complete. This park is located 20 minutes outside of Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island and only 10 minutes away from Comfort Cove Cottage.
The climb to the top of Creyke Point may be slippery when wet, but running shoes are more than sufficient to provide comfort and traction.

East Sooke Park - June 23 2007
Our hike in East Sooke Park.
Pike Road Hike in East Sooke Park (Victoria, BC)
This is an easy hike along a wide, well-groomed gravel road that takes you through the thick rainforest forests of southern Vancouver Island. The trek is more like a slow walk and takes about 25 minutes to get to the end at Iron Mine Bay. The trail is flat & easy and in good condition throughout the year. Large mud puddles will be present in during the winter months.
NOTE: The trail is in excellent conditions but could have muddy patches in the winter.
Sooke Potholes from the air
A Yuneec Q500 flies over the Sooke Potholes on Vancouver island BC. These eroded pools are popular with swimmers in the summer, enjoying the crystal clear water, abundant fish and unique falls. This park has camping and extensive bike and hiking along the regional Galloping Goose Trail.
Peden Lake
A beautiful hike to Peden Lake near the Sooke Potholes.
Witty's Lagoon - Beach Trail Hike

Forest Trail & Boardwalk at Matheson Lake
We were hiking around Matheson Lake in the fall. The trail from the parking lot to the lake was easy but became a bit rough as we continued around the eastern perimeter.
Matheson Lake is a fresh water lake that the locals use as a summer hideout. The water is warmer than the nearby ocean so people can comfortably go swimming and sunbathing. The beach is small, but you can find a private rocky outcropping along the lake trail.
Welcome to Comfort Cove Cottage
Relax in an oceanfront cottage just 40 minutes from downtown Victoria, BC. Located in the quiet rural community of East Sooke on southern Vancouver Island, this serene location is where the coastal rainforest meets the ocean.
