A Day of Cycling at a Japanese Keirin Track
In today’s video, we’ll be visiting the Keirin cycling track in Gifu city, Japan. Normally, these tracks are not open to the public for riding, but today there was a special event for amateur riders. My buddies and I quickly jumped on this opportunity and we couldn’t wait to get on the track.
It takes about an hour to get to Gifu city by train from Nagoya, and you have to put your bikes in bags to bring them on the train. A bit inconvenient, but at least they’re pretty light, and quick to assemble.
Keirin tracks, also called velodromes in other parts of the world, are common all over Japan, and there is a milion dollar gambling industry built around them. Therefore, the facilities are quite large and impressive.

As is now customary, every year a select group of the finest international track sprinters are invited into the exclusive world of Japanese keirin to compete in a special calendar of racing. In 2016 the kokusai (国際, international) keirin includes two former world champions in Shane Perkins (Australia) and Theo Bos (Netherlands), and a silver-medallist at the Rio Olympics in Matthijs Büchli (Netherlands). From October 26th through October 28th these three superstars graced the open-to-the-elements banks of Nagoya keirinjou, the near 50-year-old track racing complex in the west of manufacture-centric metropolis Nagoya. Japan Girls Keirin Final with Kaarle (AUS) and Paige (NZ) - 10/3/13
This was our 3rd race in Japan. It was at Keiokaku Velodrome in Tokyo. Paige Paterson is wearing red (number 3) and Kaarle McCulloch is wearing yellow (number 5). We placed 3rd and 2nd respectively.
