Spectacular Japan: Matsue Castle (松江城, Matsuejō), Shimane, Japan
Matsue Castle (松江城, Matsuejō)
Shimane, Japan
There are many many castles around the country, however, among them only 12 are remaining original castles and only 5 are designated as National Treasure. And Matsue Castle is one them.
Matsue Castle is one of only a dozen original castles in Japan, meaning that its main tower has survived to this day through fires, earthquakes and the anti-feudal demolitions of the Meiji Period. It is sometimes called the black castle after its darkly-colored, austere exterior. The construction of Matsue Castle began in 1607 and finished in 1611, under the local lord Horio Yoshiharu.
Access 10 minutes by Lake Line Bus from JR Matsue Station to Matsue Castle Ote-mae bus stop. Or, 5 minutes by Ichibata bus from Ichibata Railway Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station, and get off at Kencho-mae bus stop then walk 2 minutes.

Matsue Japan: A magical less visited city in Shimame.
Matsue Japan is beautiful, off the beaten path but worth the visit. Perhaps less travelled by the normal tourist; Matsue Shimane is another gem. This quiet city has so much to offer. Not only is it picturesque but it has a castle with what might be one of my favourite surrounding areas with shrines, temples, gardens lined with traditional japanese houses you will love strolling and taking photos.
I used the lakeside bus one day pass to get around and it was easy and affordable. This guide will help you plan your trip before you go!
Matsue Castle - Shimane - 松江城
Completed in 1611 Matsue Castle, a “Black Castle” due to its dark and austere exterior is and surrounded by a gorgeous moat and thick wall. It is one of only a dozen original castles left in Japan. That means that unlike many others like Naoya Castle and Osaka Castle, Matsue Castle and it’s main tower have survived to this day through many wars and natural disasters. In 1638 the castle and its fief were assigned to a branch of the Matsudaira clan who were relatives of the powerful ruling clan at the time, the Tokugawa.

Matsue Castle Tower, a national treasure, is one of the 12 remaining castle towers in all Japan. Of these 12, it is the second-largest and third-tallest. As a castle tower representative of the Keicho era, one of the peaks of castle-building, it was designated national treasure in July 2015. Although many castles across the country were dismantled in observance of an official order for their abolition at the beginning of the Meiji era, Matsue Castle Tower escaped destruction due to the efforts of Takagi Gompachi, a former retainer of the Matsue Domain, and the family of Katsube Motouemon, a wealthy local farmer. It was protected by the citizens thereafter and passed down to the present day.

City in Japan
Matsue is a city on the northwest coast of Japan's main island. Matsue Castle is one of Japan's few largely intact 17th-century castles.
The surrounding park is known for Jozan Inari Shrine’s fox statues. Across the castle moat, Shiomi Nawate street is lined with Edo-period samurai residences. The Lafcadio Hearn Former Residence was the Greek writer’s local home. Pleasure boats ply the waters of vast Lake Shinji.

From Wikipedia: Matsue Castle is a feudal castle in Matsue in Shimane prefecture, Japan. Nicknamed the black castle or plover castle, it is one of the few remaining medieval castles in Japan at least of the few remaining in their original wooden form, and not a modern reconstruction in concrete.
The construction of Matsue Castle began in 1607 and finished in 1611, under the local lord Horio Yoshiharu. In 1638, the fief and castle passed to the Matsudaira clan, a junior branch of the ruling Tokugawa clan.
Most Japanese castles have been damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes, or other causes. Since a large part of their construction was wooden, fire was a major hazard. Matsue castle was built after the last great war of feudal Japan, so it never saw a battle. Yet only some of the walls and the keep exist today.
