Museum of a Rare Japanese Boat Festival in Matsue
????????This year (2019), a procession of a hundred luxuriously decorated boats filled with performers dressed in colorful costumes sing and dance as they sail through Matsue. ????????
This local festival is called Horan-enya, a Shinto ritual with 370 years of history and one of the three largest boat festivals in Japan. This festival is only held every 10 years and because it is only held every 10 years, this museum was built in hopes to keep this significant tradition alive and teach people about this rarely occurring festival. This museum provides information on the origin and history of Horan-enya while including exhibits of the colorful costumes and boats with pictures and videos of past events. This museum also has pamphlets in different languages (English, Chinese, Korean, French) and if you have the pocket curator app on your phone you can also view the descriptions in many other languages. A must visit for people planning on attending the Horan-enya 2019 festival!

Matsuejo (jo=castle) was completed in 1611 by the local lord Horio Yoshiharu. However in 1638, relatives of the Tokugawa Shogun, the Matsudaira clan received this castle.

Matsue Castle - Shimane - 松江城
Completed in 1611 Matsue Castle, a “Black Castle” due to its dark and austere exterior is and surrounded by a gorgeous moat and thick wall. It is one of only a dozen original castles left in Japan. That means that unlike many others like Naoya Castle and Osaka Castle, Matsue Castle and it’s main tower have survived to this day through many wars and natural disasters. In 1638 the castle and its fief were assigned to a branch of the Matsudaira clan who were relatives of the powerful ruling clan at the time, the Tokugawa.

Visit Magnificent and Interesting Matsue Castle Tower
Matsue Castle Tower is more interesting than Kanazawa Castle because this one is original. Nicknamed the black castle - it is one of the few remaining medieval castles in its original wooden form.
The tower dates from 1611. To see all four levels, you must make your way up four flights of very steep, narrow stairs! Worthwhile doing though...

Within the samurai town of Matsue City in Shimane Prefecture, visitors can visit the former residence of Lafcadio Hearn, one of the first western authors on Japanese culture. His former residence is now opened to the public.
Though Lafcadio Hearn was born in Greece, his Matsue home was traditionally Japanese. The exterior is the then typical strong Japanese gate while on the other side of the gate is a traditional Japanese garden. Visitors can explore through his home, examining the hanging scrolls in the tatami rooms.
Lafcadio arrived in Japan in 1890. During his time here, he married a Japanese lady and became a naturalized Japanese citizen, taking the name Koizumi Yakumo. Among his works are “Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan” and Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things. For a deeper understanding of Lafcadio Hearn, there is a museum next to his residence, with collections on both his work and Lafcadio Hearn, the person.

【伪映画】松江城下の子 | Children of Matsue Castle | 松江城下之子
Taken on 30th October 2019 in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture (Matsue Castle and the castle town, Otemae Street, Matsue History Museum, Horikawa, Shiomi Nawate, Shinji Lake Hot Spring Footbath).

A female in black and a female in pink.
The woman in black chooses to take over the witch. She wears a black crepe over her head, beats the drumm every sunset. And sometimes she turns into a crow, or sways over the sky above the castle tower in Matsue City, or passes low over the river.
The girl who chooses to become a lady, she has a pearl hairpin , followed by a sly beast of the pink panther. Her pet is a group of small yellow ducks, wherever they go, is filled with moonlight silver laughter.

Japan Travel: Matsumae Castle Matsumaehan Yashiki History museum Hokkaido57
Matsumae (松前) is a former castle town just west of Cape Shirakami(白神岬),which is the southernmost point of Hokkaido. There is only 20 kilometers across the Tsugaru Strait from Aomori. Matsumae was the northern limit of Japan during the Edo Period and the sole feudal fief on the otherwise wild, untamed frontier of Hokkaido. The thriving, 30,000 person town attracted merchants engaged in the shipping trade, and was protected by a garrison at Matsumae Castle, which was the only Japanese style castle to have been built on Hokkaido.
Built on a hillside advantage point, Matsumae Castle cemented a foothold on Hokkaido from where to use the island's abundant natural resources. Toward the end of the Edo Period, the castle was equipped with cannon to counter the threat of foreign ships. As with many Japanese castles, Matsumae Castle's original keep was destroyed some times over the centuries. The current three story high structure is a modern concrete reconstruction from the early 1960s which houses a local history museum displaying a collection of artifacts of the local Matsumae clan, including some items related to the Ainu people.

Japan's BLACK CASTLE|Day 74 - Shimane
Matsue Castle (松江城, Matsuejō) is one of only a dozen original castles in Japan, meaning that its main tower has survived to this day through fires, earthquakes and the anti-feudal demolitions of the Meiji Period. It is sometimes called the black castle after its darkly-colored, austere exterior.
Matsue Castle was completed in 1611, a few years after the last decisive battle of feudal Japan. In 1638, the fief and castle were reassigned to a branch of the Matsudaira clan, relatives of the ruling Tokugawa. Perched atop a hill and surrounded by a moat and thick walls, the castle was built to withstand a war, though, thanks to the timing of its construction, it never actually saw a battle. Major renovation works were undertaken in the 1950s to further preserve it, and the interior of the main keep now houses a museum displaying period arms and artifacts.
Izumo Taisha (出雲大社) is located in the city of Izumo in Shimane Prefecture, a one hour train ride west of Matsue. It is one of Japan's most important shrines. There are no records of exactly when Izumo Taisha was built, but it is often considered the oldest shrine in Japan, being already in existence in the early 700s as revealed by the nation's oldest chronicles.
Izumo used to be ruled by a powerful clan in pre-historic times, and the region plays a central role in Japan's creation mythology. The main deity (kami) enshrined at Izumo Taisha is Okuninushi no Okami. According to the creation myths, Okuninushi was the creator of the land of Japan and the ruler of Izumo. He also became known as the deity of good relationships and marriage. Visitors consequently clap their hands four times instead of the usual two times during their prayers: twice for themselves and twice for their actual or desired partners.

Japan's Most Terrifying Bridge: Eshima Ohashi ★ ONLY in JAPAN #33
It's been nicknamed the ROLLER COASTER BRIDGE because of it's super steep slope and appearance of being a bridge to the sky.
That's the Eshima Ohashi Bridge straddling Shimane and Tottori prefecture in Japan.
Facts about the Eshima Ohashi:
★ 1,446 meters long
★ 250 meters of continupus concrete in the center (the third longest Ramen bridge in the world!)
★ 6.1% grade slope on the Shimane Prefecture side
★ 5.1% grade on the Tottori side
★ The bridge needed to be high in the center to allow large shops to pass under.
☆ From the Shimane side, you can get the optical illusion view at the end of the street by the sea.
☆ If you have a good telephoto lens, go even further to the other side of the sea for a better shot. (Map below)
The bridge has a good pedestrian footpath on both sides of the road.
Bicycles are not allowed on the footpath so stay on the main road with the car, to the left side.
There is an observation point on the top that offers sweeping views all the way to Daisen (mountain).
The closest major access point is Yonago Station and airport on the Sea of Japan. From there, take a train to Sakaiminato and rent a bicycle or grab a taxi.
Sakaiminato is also famous for Japanese anime and the main street is like a museum of monsters!
The bridge is a 20 minute ride from Sakai Minato.
Take food with you from the station.

Samurai are Real | Matsue castle part2
Tameshigiri is the Japanese art of target test cutting. The kanji literally mean test cut (kun'yomi: ためし ぎり tameshi giri). This practice was popularized in the Edo period (17th century) for testing the quality of Japanese swords. It continues to the present day, but has evolved into a martial art which focuses on demonstrating the practitioner's skill with a sword.-wikipedia
