Matsumae (松前) is a former castle town just west of Cape Shirakami(白神岬),which is the southernmost point of Hokkaido. There is only 20 kilometers across the Tsugaru Strait from Aomori. Matsumae was the northern limit of Japan during the Edo Period and the sole feudal fief on the otherwise wild, untamed frontier of Hokkaido. The thriving, 30,000 person town attracted merchants engaged in the shipping trade, and was protected by a garrison at Matsumae Castle, which was the only Japanese style castle to have been built on Hokkaido.
Built on a hillside advantage point, Matsumae Castle cemented a foothold on Hokkaido from where to use the island's abundant natural resources. Toward the end of the Edo Period, the castle was equipped with cannon to counter the threat of foreign ships. As with many Japanese castles, Matsumae Castle's original keep was destroyed some times over the centuries. The current three story high structure is a modern concrete reconstruction from the early 1960s which houses a local history museum displaying a collection of artifacts of the local Matsumae clan, including some items related to the Ainu people.

Japan Travel: Cherry trees in Matsumae Park Sakura festival Hokkaido60 Moopon
The former Matsumae castle grounds north of the keep have been turned into the expansive Matsumae Park, in which rows upon rows of cherry trees are planted. More than ten thousand cherry trees representing over 250 different varieties can be seen around the grounds, and have won the park the distinction of being ranked among the top 100 cherry blossom spots in Japan. The park also has a small Sakura Museum just north of the castle keep with information about the development of the blossoms, and photos and preserved specimens of the types of cherry trees around the grounds.
Due to the large variety of cherry trees, Matsumae has an unusually long blooming season that lasts from late April to late May. A sakura festival is held in every spring during much of that period with food stands, festival stalls and the special live event held on the grounds. The illuminated castle keep is also must see in the evenings until about 21:00 between April and November.
The north end of Matsumae Park ends at the foot of Mount Shogun(勝軍山) at a clearing in the cherry trees from where you can look out over Matsumae's cherry groves to the Tsugaru Strait. The area is the entrance to the Hachijuhakkasho Hiking Circuit, which is a network of easy hiking trails on the side of Mount Shogun. A 20 minute long trail leads hikers through groves of mountain cherry trees to a hut about half way up the mountain with various Buddhist statues and monuments erected along the path.

Japan Trip: Matsumae's temple district historic temples over 300year old cherry tree Hokkaido58
Matsumae's temple district is located adjacent to the castle grounds, just northwest of the keep. The district is filled with a various temples of different Buddhist sects. Many of the temples were constructed before the construction of Matsumae Castle, and as such comprise some of the oldest and most culturally valuable structures in Hokkaido. Other notable spots in the temple district include the graveyard of the local Matsumae lords and the 300 year old Kechimyaku Sakura (血脈桜,bloodline cherry)with a legend. From the cherry tree many of the park's ones have descended.

Japan Trip: History of Arita-yaki at the Folk and History Museum, Arita, Saga06
Japan Trip: History of Arita-yaki at the Folk and History Museum, Arita, Saga06
Located in western Saga Prefecture, Kyushu, Arita is a small town known for its local pottery, Arita-yaki. Over 400 years ago, Toyotomi Hideyoshi brought several skilled Korean craftsmen to Japan. One of these men found kaolin, the main ingredient needed to create porcelain in Arita’s Izumiyama Quarry. This lead to Arita town being the first producers of porcelain in Japan, and Akita-yaki was born.
The Folk and History Museum in Arita town is a small museum which examines the local history through exhibitions of porcelain production. There are also explanations about how porcelain has affected daily life, including documents relating to the porcelain business and local currencies.
The museum is located just beside the Izumiyama Quarry. Visitors will find a grand stone sign at the entrance of the museum. Outside the museum, there is a mortar for hulling. There is a restaurant in the museum as well.

Japan Trip: Otaru city Beautiful canal and interesting buildings Hokkaido43 Moopon
Otaru (小樽) is a small harbor city, about 40km(25ml) northwest of Sapporo. With beautifully preserved canal area and interesting herring mansions, Otaru is a pleasant day trip city from Sapporo or a nice stop en route to or from Niseko or the Shakotan Peninsula.
Otaru served as a major trade and fishing port from Hokkaido's colonization in the late 1800s. For this reason it was chosen as the terminal station of Hokkaido's first railway line that connected the port with nearby Sapporo. Many old warehouses and former office buildings by trade and shipping companies give Otaru's city center a special character reminiscent of past decades.
