Special historic site - Matsuyama Castle. The castle is one of Japan's twelve original castles (castles which have survived the post-feudal era since 1868 intact). It is also one of the most complex and interesting castles in the Japan. It is located on Mount Katsuyama, a steep hill in the city center that provides visitors with a bird's eye view of Matsuyama and the Seto Inland Sea. There are about 200 cherry trees (on the castle grounds) which makes it a lovely cherry blossom spot typically around late March to early April each year, Matsuyama, Japan 2018. Shots were taken with GoPro Hero 5 Black 1080p HD.

Matsuyama Castle Ropeway takes only 3 minutes to reach Matsuyama Castle at the top of the mountain. The ropeway shopping district leading up to the boarding area is famous for local stores such as restaurants, old bookstores, antique shops and confectionary shops selling famous sweets of Ehime, Matsuyama, Japan 2018. The city of Matsuyama on Shikoku island is quite big but feels very provincial and comfortable. You are now away from the big cities of the mainland.
The main tourist attraction must be the Matsuyama Castle that is situated on a hill overlooking the city. You can reach the castle by a ropeway if you don't want to walk.
The view from the castle is spectacular. You can overlook the city and the Seto inland sea. We were lucky to be there when the sun was setting. The castle itself was very beautiful and apart from other castles in Japan there where actually a lot of interesting exhibitions inside. You could among other things dress up like a samurai.
The stairs in the castle were very steep and slippery without shoes especially because we carried our son of 2 years of age. Fortunately there were a short cut rout (also atypical in Japan) so we missed some floors.
We found the number of tourists relative limited. I can highly recommend a visit to this place.

Matsuyama is the capital city of Ehime Prefecture on Japan’s Shikoku Island. It’s known for its central Dōgo Onsen Honkan bathhouse, dating from the Meiji Period, with ornate, tiered wooden buildings.
Nearby is Shiki Memorial Museum, dedicated to Masaoka Shiki’s haiku poetry. To the west is the restored, feudal-era Matsuyama Castle, with its hilltop gardens and seasonal cherry blossoms.

Canals and Castles | Cinematic Japan Travel Vlog: Bitchu Matsuyama Castle and Kurashiki (Day 7 & 8)
Continuing our Japan Trip, we travel to the Okayama Prefecture to explore Bitchu Matsuyama Castle and Kurashiki.
On the first day of our Japan Travel Vlog, as traveling the Oki Islands was rather inconvenient during the off-season, we decided to instead venture to the Okayama prefecture, where we stayed overnight. But before that, I decided to finally fly my drone around the Oki Island Port at sunrise to get some nice cinematic drone footage. Afterwards, we took a ferry and bus to Okayama where we stayed overnight. The next day, we set out to explore the famous Bitchu Matsuyama Castle, also known as the castle in the sky, because of the fog that can be seen in the mornings between September and March each year. Unfortunately, the castle is not easily accessible and you have to take two buses and walk quite long to reach it. However, at the top there were beautiful Japanese Autumn Colors, which I took some great drone footage of. We explored the castle, which is one of twelve Japanese original castles (for my explanation on original castles, you can check out day 3 of our travel vlog here). Even though it is difficult to get to the castle, I can definitely recommend it to anyone who is in the area!
Continuing, we ventured further into the Okayama prefecture to a nice and small canal town called Kurashiki. As we were there on a Sunday, Kurashiki felt a bit touristy but nevertheless was a nice typical Japanese town with a canal running through it. Lined up, there were old warehouses which now house shops selling Japanese snacks, souvenirs and other trinkets.
Later we went out for dinner to a local fish restaurant and prepared for our next day trip to Matsuyama in Ehime Prefecture, Shikoku.

Built in 1240, Bitchu Matsuyama Castle is both an Important Cultural Property of Japan and is counted among Japan’s top 100 castles. The castle is located atop a mountain at an altitude of 430 m, making it the highest fortress with an existing castle tower in Japan. Visitors to the castle are treated to a spectacular sight, especially in the early mornings of fall and winter when the clouds spread out to form a “sea of clouds” around the castle. Also in fall, when the trees change color, the landscape becomes painted in a deep vermilion as if the castle walls were aflame, offering visitors a truly majestic sight.
