Top A Snowmobile Trail - MATTAWA. Located on the TOP A112A 32km north of the Town of Mattawa, this trailside stop will have you gazing in awe at the massive icicles that hang from the Canadian Shield above. The entrance to the mine has a standing deck providing a unique view of the hollow that is strung with quartz and mica veins that run through the colourful granite rock. Mica from this mine is on display at both the Royal Ontario Museum and Mattawa Museum. The Purdy Mica Mine was, at the time, the largest Mica Mine in North America.
The deposit was discovered in 1941 by J. Purdy and H. MacDonald of Eau Claire. They recovered about $20,000 worth of muscovite in 1941 and 1942. The deposit was later operated by Purdy Mica Mines Limited (19442-1945) and by Northern Mica Company (1949-1953). The total production amounted to 2,942,786 pounds of mica valued at $1,577,326. The mica was trimmed in shops at Mattawa and North Bay. The mine was worked by open-cuts, an adit, and shafts. The deepest opening is 130 feet.

Final Rides | Bonfield to Mattawa | Big Joe Mufferaw Monument
One of our final Snowmobile rides, we headed up to the closest Yellow OFSC trail we could find open during March Break 2018. We ended up in Bonfield just south of North Bay Ontario. Starting the day from Sampson G. Sales Ski-Doo dealer in Bonfield - check out their store! The trails were excellent. We headed east above Algonquin Park to Mattawa and stopped at the Explorer's Snow Tour Redbridge Lookout. Then we headed to Mattawa for a quick lunch at the Valois Motel and Restaurant. About Mufferaw Joe:
Big Joe Mufferaw was a French Canadian folk hero from the Ottawa Valley, perhaps best known today as the hero of a song by Stompin' Tom Connors.[1] Like Paul Bunyan, he made his living chopping down trees. The name is also sometimes spelled Muffero, Muffera, Muffraw, and Montferrand. The last spelling, Montferrand, is his actual French name: Joseph Montferrand. Anglophones who had trouble with it used one of the other spellings.
In addition to being the subject of many Paul Bunyan-esque tall tales, Mufferaw is sometimes enlisted as a defender of oppressed French Canadian loggers[1] in the days when their bosses were English-Canadians and their rivals for work were Irish-Canadians. In one story, Big Joe was in a Montreal bar, where a British army major named Jones was freely insulting French Canadians. After Big Joe beat the major, he bellowed, Any more insults for the Canadians?
Some Mufferaw tales take place in the northeast United States.
A real strongman, a logger in the Ottawa Valley timber trade by the name of Joseph Montferrand[1] lived from 1802 to 1864. French Canadian writer Benjamin Sulte told this man's story in a 1975 book. He also is the subject of a chapter in Joan Finnegan's 1981 book Giants of the Ottawa Valley and her 1983 book Look! The Land Is Growing Giants. Bernie Bedore of Arnprior also wrote several books recounting Joe's adventures.
A statue of Joe Mufferaw was erected outside of the Mattawa Museum in Mattawa, Ontario, during the spring of 2005.[1] It was carved by local carving artist Peter Cianafrani, and was his last statue before he died later in the spring. A plaque commemorating his name sits at the base of the statue.(from Wikipedia)

Expédition Champlain - Penetanguishene à Mattawa
Ce projet est parrainé et produit par La Clé d'la Baie en Huronie. Cette initiative est subventionnée par le ministère de la Culture de lOntario dans le cadre du Fonds dinvestissement stratégique dans le secteur culturel (FISSC).
Le projet fait partie des Commémorations Champlain. Il sagit dun trajet de canot en partance de la Huronie qui retrace la route des voyageurs au XVIIe siècle. La route longe la Mattawa pour aboutir enfin à la rivière des Outaouais. La destination finale est la ville de Mattawa. Léquipe sera guide par un professionnel, Michel Arvisais, et sera composée de cinq jeunes âgés de 18 à 25 ans.
Le parcours sera ponctué darrêts : le Parc national des îles-de-la-Baie-Georgienne, le Parc provincial de la rivière des Français, le Centre daccueil de la rivière des Français, le Portage de La Vase et plusieurs autres parcs et centres culturels ainsi que des participations à de nombreux festivals et évènements.
Lobjectif est de commémorer la présence de Champlain.

Late season tour at VMUTS: Day 1 - WE FOUND THE MINE!
mid Novemberr we headed north of mattawa Ontario to the voyageur muti use trail system, aka VMUTS. we set aside a 3 day weekend to explore what we could of the MASSIVE trail system. the first day we headed out from our base camp in search of the abandoned Purdy mica mine. although its located right off the trail you could easily miss it! after exploring the mine we looped back around on the semi technical hydro line and headed back to camp.

The Last Place A song about the 1978 Temiskaming Tragedy
Following the worst school canoe trip disaster in history and unbeknownst to anyone, the family of one of the 12 boys who died in the 1978 St. John's School tragedy on Lake Temiskaming asked for and were given the canoe in which their son had spent the last day of his life. They tucked the canoe—called Père Lallemant—away in a shed in Port Carling, Ontario. Twenty seven years after their son died, the family gave 22' blue Chestnut canoe to the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario, asking that it be used for educational purposes. This video captures part of one of the many classes of adventure leadership and risk management students and teacher education candidates who have had an encounter with Père Lallemant in the cavernous Collection Centre of the Canadian Canoe Museum. The video features a song inspired by the family's answer to the question about why they kept the canoe for all those years before deciding to give it up to help ensure that such a tragedy will not happen again. Said Barbara Greaney, It was the last place where Davey was.

Dusted off from the archive of old 8mm tapes - here it is, Rik Emmett and his band, kicking butt in Mattawa, Ontario at the Voyageur Days festival way back in 2002. Other than a brief cut-out at the start of 'Saved by Love', this is the full concert, with lots of camerawork. Good quality video and sound! Shot by me personally with a Hi-8 camcorder on a tripod.
In the band: Marty Anderson on keyboards, Steve Skingley on bass, Mike Vassos on guitar, and rare appearance by Dave Langguth on drums.

This is from a show in northern Ontario Canada. Mattawa is a small town in a beautiful valley. The band was welcomed by thousands of adoring fans, including myself who traveled quite a distance to enjoy a spectacular display of raw feminine power!
