Buda Castle and Buda Hill - Budapest, Hungary.
Castle Hill is a large limestone plateau, where you'll find many of Budapest's most important historic sites and tourist attractions. The most popular way to reach the Castle Hill is by funicular, even though: car, bus or walking are possible options. Settlement here dates as far back as the Stone Age, resulting in an interesting mix of important medieval ruins and architectural highlights from the last few centuries.
Today, the most prominent building is Buda Castle, a huge palatial structure that dominates the hill and offers views over the beautiful Danube. Like much of Budapest, it's a great area to explore after nightfall, when it's lit up in spectacular fashion. Built in the 13th century, the first castle was located on the south spur of Castle Hill to provide protection from attacks by Mongols and Tartars. The current incarnation of Buda Castle is a massive 18th-century Neo-Baroque-style structure of more than 200 rooms. These are arranged in a symmetrical layout around the 62-meter-high central dome facing the Danube. The castle was badly damaged in WWII, but much of the exterior has been restored. Some parts are open to the public, and these contain its museums and galleries: the Hungarian National Gallery, the Budapest History Museum, and the Széchenyi National Library.
The Matthias Fountain, is a monumental fountain in the western forecourt of Buda Castle. Alajos Stróbl’s, Neo-Baroque masterpiece is one of the most frequently photographed landmark in the Hungarian capital. It is sometimes called the Trevi Fountain of Budapest.
The Fountain of the Fishing Children on the Danube terrace, is the work of sculptor Károly Senyey from 1912. It depicts two children grappling with a fish. The fine workmanship of the fishing net is remarkable. The fountain was removed in 1955 and re-erected at Rakoczi Square in Pest, but brought back to its original place in 1976. It was restored in 2001.
To the southeast of the Habsburg Steps entrance, just in front of the Royal Palace, stands a statue of Eugene of Savoy, the Habsburg prince who wiped out the last Turkish army in Hungary at the Battle of Senta in Serbia in 1697. Designed by József Róna 200 years later, it is considered to be the finest equestrian statue in Budapest.
With thousands of years of history, beautiful statues and architecture, Budapest is a city you can explore for weeks and always find something new and fascinating. Perhaps, that might be some other story..

In this tour we explore Buda on the west bank of the Danube River. Our guided walking tour is about 2.5 miles (4 km) long, starts at Church of Saint Anne, ends at Vienna Gate and covers most attractions and historic sites of Budapest Castle Hill.

The Corvina Library of King Matthias Hunyadi – supporting film made for Milan World Expo, 2015
The reign of King Matthias Hunyadi (1458–1490) was one of the golden ages of Hungarian history. Hungary was one of the leading powers of Europe, both from the political points view. the foundation of Bibliotheca Corvina (the Corvina Library) in Buda was a major cultural gesture of the King.
Contained within the Corvina Library were 1500 to 2000 codices that represented the modern, humanist ideal in their content and period artistic taste in their form. The Corvina Library was the first and biggest Renaissance-era library outside Italy. Libraries of Iohannes Vitéz de Zredna and Janus Pannonius, humanist scholar prelates of the royal court, and Italian regal collections served as models for the Corvina Library. Acquisitions of the 1470s included codices of simple design, with white vine stem illumination (bianchi girari), fashionable in Italy. In 1476, King Matthias married Beatrice of Aragon, daughter of Ferdinand, the King of Naples. Italian humanists who accompanied the Queen to Buda gave new impetus to the development of the library. In the 1480s, a book illuminator and binder workshop was set up in Buda. The library rooms were furnished later.
Works of the so-called „master of Buda“ represent a special chapter in the history of book binding. The illuminated, gilded leather bindings are unique pieces of Renaissance book art. Ties with Italy flourished until the end of King Matthias' reign. The most renowned Italian illuminators had been assigned to make richly decorated codices for the King. Following the conquest by the Ottoman Empire, Hungary was split into three parts in 1541. During the occupation of Buda and under 150 years of Ottoman rule, most of the Corvina Library had been destroyed.
Approximately 220 volumes have survived the centuries. Today they are kept in major libraries all over the world. Corvinas are kept in several cities of Italy, and at other locations across Europe and the United States. Currently, 55 corvinas are owned by various collections in Hungary, 37 out which are kept in National Széchényi Library. For generations, Hungarian research has considered the exploration of this immense treasure as a top priority. Under the title BIBLIOTHECA CORVINA VIRTUALIS National Széchényi Library will launch a new website in 2018, in order to virtually unite corvinas.
The primary aim of BIBLIOTHECA CORVINA VIRTUALIS is to present the 37 corvinas, while the long-term aim is to digitally display all the remaining codices. Available to everyone, the service is intended to become a modern center of corvina research, by way of publishing studies, bibliographies, research aids and resources.
