Mauna Kea, Big Island, Hawaii 4K (UHD)
Recorded: May 2019
Thanks to Stefan and his wife for helping me reach the summit of Mauna Kea.
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207.3 m (13,803 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the volcano is underwater, and when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is the tallest mountain in the world, measuring over 10,000 m (33,000 ft) in height.
Mauna Kea last erupted 6,000 to 4,000 years ago and is now considered dormant.
With its high elevation, dry environment, and stable airflow, Mauna Kea's summit is one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation. Since the creation of an access road in 1964, thirteen telescopes funded by eleven countries have been constructed at the summit. The Mauna Kea Observatories are used for scientific research across the electromagnetic spectrum and comprise the largest such facility in the world.

Snow Covered Mauna Kea On The Big Island Of Hawaii January 16, 2020 Using GoPro Hero4
I wanted to get to the summit of Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawaii before the snow melted. This is the portion of the paved road nearing the summit showing the amazing snow in Hawaii. I truly hope you enjoy the beauty. If you don't like the music, simply turn off the volume. This was recorded using a GoPro Hero4 mounted to the windshield.

This is one of the three Hawaiian islands that I decided to visit. I spent three days there, drove 345 miles by car and visited, incl. the places described below.
I think that three days on such a large island is a bit too little. The distances between the points to travel are longer than on other Hawaiian islands.
Big Island, or Hawaiʻi Island is the largest and the southeasternmost island located in the U.S. state of Hawaii. The island of Hawaiʻi is the third largest island in Polynesia, behind the two main islands of New Zealand. Administratively, the whole island encompasses Hawaiʻi County. The county seat and largest city is Hilo where I lived.

Mauna Kea - The tallest peak in Hawaii
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the mountain is under water, and when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea becomes the tallest mountain in the world measuring over 10,000 m (33,000 ft). Mauna Kea is about a million years old, and has thus passed the most active shield stage of life hundreds of thousands of years ago. Mauna Kea-Humu'ula Trail is a 11.2 mile lightly trafficked out and back trail located near Kamuela, Hawaii that features a lake and is only recommended for very experienced adventurers. The trail offers a number of activity options and is best used from March until December.

We did a summit tour of Mauna Kea on the Big Island in Hawaii. It's the tallest volcano in the world!
We toured via Hawaii Forest & Trail. We went stargazing afterwards but it was pretty dark so we couldn't really record anything.

The Big Island, Hawaii Drone Footage | 4K Stress reduction by viewing nature scenes
This video used about 20 hours for 7 days to capture the magnificent view of the island of Hawaii. We hope that this footage has the effect of reducing stress and improving sleeplessness. Just looking at nature has been shown to be effective in reducing stress. [Ulrich, R.(1984)] So I created this with high-definition 4K video and natural sounds. The aerial image shot the scenery of the island of Hawaii using DJI MAVIC AIR. We used EDIUS Pro 9 for video editing. The video content is , a beach, a sunset, a meadow, a lava plateau, a valley, and a plant. The flight scene was taken as slow as possible and for a long time to create a floating sensation.

Records on recovery after cholecystectomy of patients in a suburban Pennsylvania hospital between 1972 and 1981 were examined to determine whether assignment to a room with a window view of a natural setting might have restorative influences. Twenty-three surgical patients assigned to rooms with windows looking out on a natural scene had shorter postoperative hospital stays, received fewer negative evaluative comments in nurses' notes, and took fewer potent analgesics than 23 matched patients in similar rooms with windows facing a brick building wall.

From Mauna Kea you can see all around the island including nearby Mauna Loa. The weather is much cooler on Mauna Kea so bring something warm to wear. Never forget to bring the 10 Essentials when you hike -
In September of 2012, I hiked up Mauna Kea. I didn't quite make it all the way due to altitude sickness and lack of time. But I sure was close. Here's what I learned:

Mauna Kea Observatory (In Hawaii)
Hawaii County, Hawaii - Mauna Kea Scenic Viewpoint (2018)
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcano on the island of Hawaii. Its peak is 4,207 m (13,802 ft) above sea level, making it the highest point in the state of Hawaii. Most of the mountain is under water, and when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea becomes the tallest mountain in the world[5] measuring over 10,000 m (33,000 ft). Mauna Kea is about a million years old, and has thus passed the most active shield stage of life hundreds of thousands of years ago. In its current post-shield state, its lava is more viscous, resulting in a steeper profile. Late volcanism has also given it a much rougher appearance than its neighboring volcanoes; contributing factors include the construction of cinder cones, the decentralization of its rift zones, the glaciation on its peak, and the weathering effects of the prevailing trade winds. Mauna Kea last erupted 6,000 to 4,000 years ago and is now considered dormant.
In Hawaiian mythology, the peaks of the island of Hawaii are sacred. An ancient law allowed only high-ranking aliʻi to visit its peak. Ancient Hawaiians living on the slopes of Mauna Kea relied on its extensive forests for food, and quarried the dense volcano-glacial basalts on its flanks for tool production. When Europeans arrived in the late 18th century, settlers introduced cattle, sheep and game animals, many of which became feral and began to damage the mountain's ecological balance. Mauna Kea can be ecologically divided into three sections: an alpine climate at its summit, a Sophora chrysophylla–Myoporum sandwicense (or māmane–naio) forest on its flanks, and an Acacia koa–Metrosideros polymorpha (or koa–ʻōhiʻa) forest, now mostly cleared by the former sugar industry, at its base. In recent years, concern over the vulnerability of the native species has led to court cases that have forced the Hawai'i Department of Land and Natural Resources to eradicate all feral species on the mountain.
Their construction on a landscape considered sacred by Native Hawaiians continues to be a topic of debate.
President Announces New Mauna Kea Observatory Tour
Driving to summit of Mauna Kea, tallest mountain in the world (Hawaii)
We ascend Mauna Kea in Hawaii which is the tallest mountain in the world. Standing at 4,205m above sea level. However, much of the mountain is under water; when measured from its oceanic base, Mauna Kea is 10.203m tall—much higher than Mount Everest.
It is possible to drive to the top of the mountain but you need to use a 4WD from above 2.800m where there is a Visitor's Centre. We drive from Kona, via Road 190 and then the infamous Saddle Road, a highway that crosses the island where many rental car companies used to prohibit use of their vehicles. We had to rent a Toyota 4WD for the occasion.
