Hilo ,beautiful city in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States prepares for Hurricane Lane
Hilo (/ˌhiːloʊ/; Hawaiian: [ˈhilo]) is the largest settlement and census-designated place (CDP) in Hawaii County, Hawaii, United States, which encompasses the Island of Hawaiʻi. The population was 43,263 at the 2010 census.[1]
Hawaii island
Hilo is the county seat of the County of Hawaiʻi and is located in the District of South Hilo.[2] The town overlooks Hilo Bay, at the base of two shield volcanoes; Mauna Loa, an active volcano, and Mauna Kea, a dormant volcano and the site of some of the world's most important ground-based astronomical observatories. Much of the city is at some risk from lava flows from Mauna Loa. The majority of human settlement in Hilo stretches from Hilo Bay to Waiākea-Uka, on the flanks of Mauna Loa.
Hilo is home to the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo, ʻImiloa Astronomy Center of Hawaiʻi, as well as the Merrie Monarch Festival, a week-long celebration of ancient and modern hula which takes place annually after Easter. Hilo is also home to the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corporation, one of the world's leading producers of macadamia nuts. The town is served by Hilo International Airport.[3]

Hurricane Lane is currently a very powerful tropical cyclone approaching the Hawaiian Islands, the strongest hurricane in the central Pacific since Ioke in 2006, and the first Category 5 Pacific hurricane since Patricia in 2015. The twelfth named storm, sixth hurricane, and fourth major hurricane of the 2018 Pacific hurricane season, Lane originated from a tropical wave that began producing disorganized thunderstorm activity several hundred miles off the southern coast of Mexico on August 11. Over the next four days, the disturbance gradually strengthened amid favorable weather conditions and formed a tropical depression early on August 15. Twelve hours later, the depression intensified into Tropical Storm Lane. Gradual strengthening occurred for the next day and a half which resulted in Lane reaching hurricane status by August 17. Lane then began a period of rapid intensification, becoming a high-end Category 2 hurricane on the same day. Lane continued to rapidly intensify, reaching Category 4 status twelve hours later. Lane reached its initial peak with winds of 140 mph (220 km/h) and a pressure of 948 mbar (27.99 inHg) on August 18. On August 19, Lane crossed into the Central Pacific basin, where it encountered increasing wind shear, subsequently weakening the storm. However, on August 20, Lane re-intensified into a Category 4 hurricane, and reached Category 5 intensity early on August 22.

Hawaiian Grown TV - Island Princess Candies - Plant Tour
Thanks to a sweet inspiration and hard work by its owners, Dr. Michael Purdy and his wife, Gwendolyn (Gwen) Purdy, Island Princess has become one of Hawaii's top manufacturers of specialty macadamia nut products, luscious chocolates and unique gourmet confections. As president of Purdyco International, Ltd., Dr. Purdy oversees Island Princess Macadamia Nut Company, the 1,100-acre orchard and processing facility at Keaau on The Big Island of Hawaii, Island Princess manufacturer and distributor of Island Princess products, and Orchard Heights Winery near Salem, Oregon. Upon completion of his studies at Oregon State University, Dr. Purdy graduated from the University of Oregon Health Sciences Center with a degree in dentistry.
Originally from rural Oregon, Michael and Gwen both grew up as members of large families in the small logging community of Valsetz, where the entire length of the main street was one mile and their four-year high school had a total student body of 29.
In 1983, Michael and Gwen moved to Maui to begin a dental practice. Two years later, Gwen emerged as a successful entrepreneur in her own right, when she opened Maui's Best retail stores. That same year, the Island Princess brand was born when hand-dipping chocolates in front of their delighted customers became a special feature of the retail stores.
The unique Island Princess chocolate treats were an immediate hit with visitors to Maui as well as residents. When candy production expanded into factory space, Michael could be found practicing dentistry by day and manufacturing confections by night, gaining the nickname The Choc Doc.
Island Princess gourmet products became a major draw to consumers in The Islands and beyond, prompting Michael to give up his dental practice in order to focus full time on developing the growing business. Due to the increasing need for a larger labor pool and more convenient shipping, Island Princess relocated to Honolulu in 1989.
The next big step in Island Princess' growth occurred in 1998 with the acquisition of a macadamia nut orchard and processing facility, making Island Princess one of the few companies in Hawaii that grows, processes, manufactures and distributes macadamia nuts and confections. The Island Princess Orchard Estate, located on the slopes of Mauna Kea at Keaau on The Big Island of Hawaii is 1,100 acres of pristine farmland, with ideal natural conditions for growing macadamia nuts of the highest quality and with the richest flavor. In fact, dedication to quality, creativity and service are the keys to Island Princess success story. Our many loyal customers have come to depend upon Island Princess' trademarks of Hawaii-grown macadamia nuts, superior ingredients, innovative recipes and exceptional packaging.
Don't take just our word for it. Island Princess Macadamia Popcorn Crunch was voted the best caramel corn in the United States by National Food Distributors Magazine. Our world-famous Mele Macs are a year-round best seller. If it were possible to stack all of the Mele Macs consumed in one year, they would extend from sea level to the top of Haleakala (over 10,000 feet in elevation), more than 20 times.
With a strong work ethic, vast energy and dynamic leadership on the part of our owners, Island Princess continues to set new standards of excellence.

Incredible Big Island of Hawaii Property for Sale. Water, the source of life, is indeed the world's most precious commodity. Water is highly valued in all cultures and no matter how you say it: Japanese, mizu, Spanish, aqua, Chinese, shui, Russian, vody, French, eau, Hawaiian, wai, Hindi, pani and Swahili, maji, water is the single most critical factor to life. This Keaau property sits on top of aquifers 8,000-12,000 feet below. These aquifers are fed by waters from the largest mountain on earth, Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa which is a close second. The combination of underground flowing porous lava fields working as nature's filter, and the high elevation of these 2 mountains creates a unique eco-system transforming artic moisture to bountiful, pure rain. The slopes of these mountains feed the Keaau aquifer almost 200 inches of pure rainwater per year. This translates to approx. 1.38 billion++ gallons per day. Besides this amazing water source, this property has in place transferable Special Use Permits approved by the County of Hawaii for development of a brewery, distillery or soft drink facility and, a beer garden/visitors center-see renderings. The owner's vision offers a truly unique combination for location (tourism), opportunity (fastest growing population) and resources (free, pure water) to create the next Made in Hawaii success story. The next owner will have entitlements to a percentage of the water production; there is no charge for use of the artesian spring water. Recently a US Geological Survey concluded that the waters of Keaau are among the purest in the world. These are considered young and natural artesian springs which delivers bountiful and pure water from one of the world's most remote eco-systems with minimal human interference or processing. As part of the Northeast Mauna Loa Sector area which includes the Hilo and Keaau Aquifer System Area, the water is accessed via a well system built in 1981 and has a pump intake located at a depth of 241 feet. Amazing Diverse Landscapes of the Big Island of Hawaii
Me and my hubby were amazed while driving around the island, it only takes about 6-7 hrs to drive around the whole island but the landscape changes so diversely its almost unbelievable. Waikoloa in the west is one of the driest cities in the US receiving about 10 inches of rain while 2 hours to the east Hilo is one of the wettest cities in the US, receiving more 130 inches of rain per year, with lava fields, green, black and white beaches, rainforests, valleys, arid desserts , alpine climate on Mauna Kea and one of the earth's most active volcano- Kilauea.
So yea we definitely loved our trip to the Big Island, Hawaii :) ALOHA!
