Mavis Bank 26 Oct 2014
A small group visiting the quiet hillside community of Mavis Bank, less than an hours drive from central Kingston. Mavis Bank is the gateway to Jamaica's Blue Mountains (from the west) and is the starting point of many trails.
This time, we wanted to retrace part of the route followed by national hero Paul Bogle in 1865. A preacher in the native Baptist church, he and his comrades walked some 40 miles from Stoney Gut in St. Thomas to present a petition to the Governor in Spanish Town in the hope of some relief from the extreme hardships being felt. The pleas were ignored and the oppression intensified, leading to the Morant Bay Rebellion later that year.
Our short hike began in Mt. Charles where a large community centre was built in the 1960s, with some assistance given by the late N.W.Manley, former Prime Minister of Jamaica (and also a national hero). We followed the river path, lush and green even in dry times, passing coffee farms along the way. Eventually emerging on the road near to Mavis Bank coffee factory, built in 1923 and producing some of world's finest (and most expensive!) coffee.
Finally we rested up at Kenton's place, complete with a river swimming spot and plenty of cool shade. Real lemonade, fish tea (soup) and curried chicken, steamed vegetable, avocado pear and rice n' peas to round off a pleasant few hours before our return trip to Kingston in the late afternoon.
