Claudia is 62 years old. She was born in Mexico, but came to the United States in 1995. Since 2003, she has supported her three children by owning and operating a food cart in Little Village.
The catch? Claudia's business is illegal, because Chicago bans street vending.
People want to buy Claudia's food. At one point, Claudia had five carts and a handful of employees, but because of steady police harassment she has had to cut back. If nothing changes, Claudia and other vendors will continue to operate in fear. They could be stripped of their livelihoods at any moment at the whim of the police and City Hall.

Located in River North at the corner of Orleans and Huron, just west of the art gallery district and just south of another Chicago classic, Club Lago, The Green Door Tavern opened in 1921 and made it through prohibition which was already in full effect at that time. But that didn't stop the owners from selling alcohol. They constructed a speakeasy inside and painted the door green, a symbol that alcohol was secretly being served within. Today, the upper floor of the building is still a bar and restaurant. A selection of 10 beers on tap includes Guinness and Fat Tire, and the menu features burgers and pasta dishes. But walk downstairs and you'll find a virtual museum of odds and ends of the 20th Century. It's definitely a must-see for any Chicago history buff.

Head to west Kinzie Street and dine at the elegant Mercadito Chicago for 11 varieties of tacos and enchiladas. Mercadito also serves a selection of assorted guacamole with strawberries and pineapple among the ingredients. My favorite drink is definitely the Little Market, with dried (gwaheo) guajillo chile around the rim. Did you know that Mercadito offers a late night menu every day of the week after midnight? Take advantage of the late-night Takeeza Time offering all-you-can eat tacos for $23 after 10 p.m. Until closing time Sunday through Thursday and after 11 p.m., and until closing on Friday and Saturday nights, too!

Plan ahead to see a classic fairy tale come to life at the Lyric Opera from Dec 7th through Dec 19th. Based on the dark Brothers Grimm tale, two children name Hansel and Gretel go to a dark forest to find enough food to eat for dinner. Follow the children as they discover a dangerously enticing new place and learn the values of hard work, resourcefulness, and family, not to mention meeting a mysterious woman with a gingerbread house, who takes them in; however, it not long before they learn she's actually a witch, and has made some unorthodox dinner plans involving her young guests. It's a good balance of scary and humor, including a food-flinging scene, Hansel and Gretel appeals to kids, too. So bring them! Don't wait to get your tickets, there's a limited amount!

Habanero's Mexican Cuisine, our Mexican Restaurants have been in Iowa, Illinois since 1993 and has been a favorite place to enjoy Mexican Food in the Quad Cities at our Bettendorf IA and Moline Southpark IL restaurant locations. Many have stated over the years that we have the best authentic Mexican food in the two state area. We thank you all for your support.
What is There To Know About Mexican food?
Mexican food is popular all over the world and for great reasons. There is such a variety when it comes to Mexican dishes. You can taste combinations you never have before. Our Habanero's Mexican Restaurants recipe dishes come from our families in the Puebla, Mexico region. Many people appreciate the great Mexican minds that created popular Mexican foods. The foods thrill our taste buds, the smells excite our minds, and the looks please our eyes and enrich and inspire our souls.
Many of the Mexican foods of today are based from long ago when the Aztecs and Mayas first created them. In addition the Mexican foods evolved when the Spanish colonists arrived. One ingredient that has not changed is the chili pepper. You may also find a bit of Caribbean influence in some Mexican dishes, especially in the Mexican states of Veracruz and the Yucatan. French influence can also be found in some Mexican dishes, one being bolillo. That is bread popular in Mexico that has a hint of French.
There are many health benefits when it comes to Mexican foods. They are rich in vitamins and minerals, with low fat and calories. You are not eating authentic Mexican food if you eat at Taco Bell. America has added many fats to the foods, which doesn't contain all the nutrients you would eat if you ate in Mexico. Mexican dishes contain many fresh ingredients that you may not be able to find in other types of cuisine. Tomatoes, many different varieties of peppers, onions and others are very healthy for your body.
All of our restaurant recipes at Habanero's as mentioned earlier were influeced by our family roots based in Puebla, Mexico a large valley surrounded on four sides by the mountains and volcanoes. The best-known Mole (Chicken or Turkey cooked in a dark sauce of many spices and flavorings) is named after the city of Puebla, mole poblano a popular authentic mexican recipe, this mexican dish is served at all of our Habanero's Mexican Restaurants. Foods differ in the different regions of Mexico it depends on the climate and geography of the area along with ethnic differences. Northern Mexico is known for its dishes that contain meat, while in Southern Mexico, dishes popular include vegetable and chicken. Sea-food is commonly served in the Mexican state of Veracruz. Seafood is very healthy for your body and can add a different taste to regular classic Mexican food dishes.
You can learn a lot of history and facts about Mexican food by the different regions. Trying new recipes will give you a taste as to why they differ. With Mexican culture rich in history, it is always nice to learn about how the foods came about and how they are nowadays. Once you are knowledgeable about the dishes it makes it even more enjoyable when cooking and eating. Come visit any one of our location at
