Yucatan Adventures with Maya Amazing
Maya Amazing Adventures is the premiere ecotourism company in the Yucatan. Brandon and Melissa Butler and I toured cenotes, wildlife areas, haciendas and villages for three days with Maya Amazing. Without a doubt, it was the best tour of my life. mayamazing.com

5 Must Do Adventures in the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is famous for Cancún, Playa del Carmen and Tulum, world-famous destinations attracting millions of visitors each year with their picture-perfect beaches and high-class resorts. But since we came to Mexico for it’s nature and culture, we were looking for adventures off-the-beaten-path in Yucatan. Today, we’d like to share our top 5 experiences with you.
01:09 Punta Laguna – head into the jungle with a local, Mayan guide, observe spider monkeys in the wild, kayak and zipline over a lively lagoon, spot some caimans and let them lower you into a hidden underground cenote.
02:43 Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve – known for it’s natural beauty and sustainable tourism, the reserve contains a beautiful stretch of beach with a off-shore coral reef and lively mangroves where you can spot birds, caymans and manatees.
03:18 Bacalar – not a big secret anymore, but the „Lagoon of Seven Colors“ with crystal clear water in all shades of blue is still worth a visit. Rent a kayak and paddle out to the „Canal de los Piratas“
03:40 Calakmul – one of the largest and most powerful ancient Maya ruins, nestled in the middle of a lush rain forest. Find yourself surrounded by wild animals while hiking through the widespread historical site and climb the highest structures for a spectacular view04:47 Ek Balam – a great alternative to Calakmul is Ek Balam, a Mayan site much more accessible and still less visited than most other ruins in the area
04:56 Cenotes – the natural highlight of the Pensinsula are around 3.000 sinkholes filled with fresh water. They’re an important habitat for plants and animals, considered as the entrance of the Mayan underworld and a perfect place to explore above and below the water surface. Find cliff jumps, rope swings (San Lorenzo Oxman Cenote) and spectacular places for snorkeling and scuba diving (Casa, Carwash, Dos Ojos, …).
If you’re interested in scuba diving the Cenotes or with the bull sharks living close to Playa del Carmen’s coast, check out our previous videos!
Have you been to the Yucatan Peninsula? Which were your favorite destinations there? Did you enjoy the cities, or prefer the natural surroundings as well? Share your experiences with us in the comments!

Yucatan of Mexico by Adventure Motorcycle
I spent a week riding an adventure motorcycle (a modified DR650) around the Yucatan peninsula on a guided trip with Ko'oX Moto. We visited the Mayan ruins of Edzna, Uxmal, Kabah, and Sayil, we swam in too many cenotes to count and lastly, we visited the LolTun caves. The Yucatan peninsula of Mexico was amazing!

Merida:
Mérida, Mexico is the largest city in the Yucatan but it doesn’t carry a big-city vibe at all. It’s a delightful town and there are so many fun things to do in Merida. The city gives off almost more of a European feel yet is still very much Mexico. Here, colorful pastels blend with historic charm along Merida’s grid-like streets. You’ll always be only a few blocks away from a plaza (city square) where there is likely some event going on.
The locals in Mérida are very friendly, the food is delicious, and the nightlife is often jamming. If planning a trip to Mérida, we would recommend trying to stay during the weekend, as the entire city tends to come out to play then.
Yucatan:
Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula is one of the most popular tourism destinations.
Major attractions include Cancun, the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, coral reefs, white-sand beaches, emerald-green waters, and perfect weather; all of them strong magnets for international travelers.
The peninsula is also home to a large grouping of Mayan archeological sites; major ones include Chichen Itza, Coba, Edzna, Kabah, Tulum and Uxmal.
Many areas of the peninsula are blanketed by a thick jungle, and in the southeast, tropical rain forests merge into the borders with Belize and Guatemala.
Best places to visit in Merida
Grand Museo Maya, Merida:
A world-class museum celebrating Maya culture, the Gran Museo houses a permanent collection of more than 1100 remarkably well-preserved artifacts, including a reclining chac-mool sculpture from Chichén Itzá and a cool underworld figure unearthed at Ek' Balam.
Casa de Montejo:
Casa de Montejo is on the south side of the Plaza Grande and dates from 1549. It originally housed soldiers but was soon converted into a mansion that served members of the Montejo family until 1970.
Museo Regional de Antropologia, Merida:
The massive Palacio Cantón houses the Museo Regional de Antropología, an anthropology museum with temporary exhibits focusing primarily on culture and history in the Yucatán (ie Maya customs), although some exhibits will occasionally offer a broader look at other regions of Mexico.
Parque Santa lucia, Merida
The pretty little Parque Santa Lucía has arcades on the north and west sides; this was where travelers would get on or off the stagecoaches that linked towns and villages with the provincial capital. Today it's a popular restaurant area and venue for Serenatas Yucatecas (Yucatecan Serenades), a free weekly concert on Thursday at 9pm.
Plaza grande
One of the nicest plazas in Mexico, huge laurel trees shade the park’s benches and wide sidewalks. It was the religious and social center of ancient T’ho; under the Spanish it was the Plaza de Armas, the parade ground, laid out by Francisco de Montejo
