Maynooth Castle
Maynooth Castle, a ruined 13th century castle in Maynooth, is a popular tourist attraction in County Kildare. The castle was built at the junction of two streams and became the home of the Fitzgerald family before its expansion by Sir John Fitzgerald in the 15th century.
The Fitzgeralds would later become the Earls of Kildare; Maynooth Castle was known as one of the largest and richest Earl's houses in Ireland. The original castle keep, constructed at the start of the 13th century, was one of the largest of its kind in Ireland.
Maynooth Castle provides an impressive entrance for Maynooth College, which was founded in 1795 and is famous for the education of the Irish Catholic priests. Today, the atmospheric castle lies in ruins—only the ruins of the keep and the main entrance gateway on the southern side remain.
Restoration work on the castle was undertaken by the Office of Public Works in 2000 in order to develop it into an Irish Heritage Site. An exhibition on the history of Maynooth Castle and the Fitzgerald family is on display at the on-site visitor centre.

The Town Of Maynooth County Kildare (Slide Show)
The ancient name of Maynooth 'Magh Nuadhat' means the plain of Nuadhat. Nuadhat is referred to as the maternal grandfather of the legendary Fionn MaCumhail in the 'Annals of the Four Masters'. In 1426 the sixth Earl of Kildare enlarged and rebuilt the castle.
In the latter half of the fifteenth century, Maynooth Castle became the centre of the Geraldine powerbase, as the Earls of Kildare increased their strength of 'rule'. This was something which the English monarchy disliked.
The culmination of the developing friction between the Fitzgeralds and the monarchy was the rebellion of Silken Thomas (so called because of his fine clothes). Silken Thomas alias Lord Offaly was a son of Garret Óg, the ninth Earl of Kildare.
Thomas rose up in rebellion against the king who had arrested his father, and held him in the Tower of London. Thomas marched to Dublin Castle and threw down the sword of state, declaring himself an enemy of the king.
However, his rebellion was curbed when he and his followers were defeated and the stronghold of Maynooth taken by the English. All those within the castle were put to death and this became known, ironically, as the 'Maynooth Pardon'. Thomas, along with five of his uncles, was later executed in London. Maynooth Castle then became a royal castle and a popular residence for the Lord Deputies of Ireland.
By the seventeenth century however, the castle had fallen derelict. It became the property of the Duke of Leinster and today only the ruined keep and the gate-house survive. It provides an impressive entrance for Maynooth College, which was founded in 1795 and is famous for the education of the Irish Catholic priests.

Carbury castle , Co Kildare
The motte on the hill was probably built by Meiler FitzHenry. The central scenic focus of Carbury Hill is the ruins of the Tudor mansion of the Colleys, which was also known as Fairy Hill. who was granted the area by Strongbow. It was acquired by the de Berminghams in the 14th century, from whom it passed by inheritance to the Preston family, who held the title Baron Gormanston, before being taken by the native Irish in the 15th century. From 23 October 1554 a 21-year lease was granted to Sir Henry Colley (the patrilineal ancestor of the Dukes of Wellington) this was renewed, and the Colley family built a large stronghouse on the hilltop in the 17th century, now a ruin. - ( Wikipedia )
Maynooth Co Kildare my home town
MAYNOOTH IS A smallish town with a grand history.
For hundreds of years it punched well above its weight as the home of the Fitzgerald family – the Dukes of Leinster who were the centre of power in Ireland for centuries, building local landmarks Maynooth Castle and Carton House in the process.
Later, it cemented its position at the heart of power with St Patrick’s seminary, set up in 1795 for “the better education of persons professing the popish or Roman Catholic religion”. It gradually grew to become the largest seminary in the world, churning out 500 priests a year in its heyday. The canal running through the heart of the town, followed by the railway, helped traffic.
Today, however, it is the non-denominational Maynooth University that dominates the town’s affairs – almost doubling the local population during term-time, and bringing an influx of shoppers, eaters and (of course) drinkers.
Maynooth is the commercial heart of north Kildare, with a couple of big spaces offering lots of retail options. The main street is still lively too, helped along by a generous complement of student bars.
