Reading is more than a pastime at the award winning McAllen Public Library, the country's largest single story public library. Get an inside look at the library that continues to attract thousands of visitors each year. There's a wide array of programming for all age groups -- from Baby Rhyme Time for toddlers and Reading Recess for children, to Game Nights for teens.
McAllen Public Library & Best Buy Book to Screen Film Festival
Teens will debut their 90-second films, based on the novels 'The Outsiders' & 'The Hunger Games' during the McAllen Public Library & Best Buy Book to Screen Film Festival on Saturday, April 8 at 2PM in the Auditorium. All ages are welcome.
Teens, you can also be a part of the new cycle of movies! Stop by the Teen Department at 3PM on Saturday, April 1 and make a 90 second movie of one of your favorite books! Create a team, pick a book, write a script, film, and edit so you can show it at our Film Festival!
New McAllen Library - Pre Opening
A new library building in McAllen means lots of changes in the way people will use the library system.
The bigger building has new technology not seen before as well as sections for all age groups.
Job Fair at McAllen Public Library
The McAllen Public Library, in partnership with Workforce Solutions, invites the public to their semi-annual job fair on Saturday, August 25 from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the Main Library. Attendees will connect with employers from over 50 different companies, fill out printed and online applications, and have onsite interviews. Attendees should bring updated resumes and dress interview ready.
In preparation for the job fair, MPL will partner with Goodwill Industries of South Texas, Inc. to provide free classes designed to assist adults at any point in the job seeking process. Each class will cover topics like searching for jobs, preparing resumes, and interview techniques. Classes will be held at the Main Library on Friday, August 17 and 24, from 2:00-4:00PM. All adults are welcome to attend.

McAllen Mayor Jim Darling Bike Tour
During the City of McAllen's State of the City, Mayor Jim Darling presented to the nearly 900 people at the McAllen Convention Center a video of him on a bike tour of the city. Mayor Darling with the assistance of the McAllen City Commissioners addressed the city's accomplishments for 2013. The video/animated video showed projects like the state of the art McAllen Fire Training Center, De Leon Soccer Complex, the award winning McAllen Public Library, McAllen Veterans Memorial Stadium improvements, Metro Connect a regional approach to transportation, Affordable Homes of South Texas, Inc., McAllen International Airport expansion, the new one stop shop for development at the McAllen Development Services, Town Lake at Firemen's Park and the city's new McAllen 311 Center.
Mayor Darling is hoping to work in conjunction as a region with other Rio Grande Valley cities like Mission, Pharr, and Edinburg.

2016 McAllen State of the City: South Texas College
MPL Named Most Beautiful Library in Texas
McAllen is ranked at the top once again. This time it’s for the transformation of an abandoned Walmart into the most beautiful library in Texas.
To find the most beautiful libraries in each state, Tech Insider looked at past and current award-winners as judged by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the American Library Association (ALA) awards. McAllen Public Library took top honors in the lone star state.
Lit Kits at McAllen Public Library
McAllen Public Library has launched an exciting new service for McAllen Public Library cardholders. The new service, called Lit Kits, allows patrons to check out kits that contain everything needed to conduct a book club on their own.
Lit Kit containers include up to 16 titles of the same book, a book club discussion guide with questions for use by the book club facilitator, a tracking guide, and other materials. Lit Kits can be checked out for six weeks with a one-time renewal option and are available for check-out at the Main Library.
McAllen ISD students tour new program at South Texas College
McAllen ISD students who plan to earn a professional license or certification took a tour of the South Texas College Technology campus on April 30, 2019. McAllen ISD and STC have a partnership for students to earn dual credit and take Career Technical Education courses.

Here is a brief recap of Monday’s McAllen City Commission meeting including an update on McAllen International Airport improvements, recognitions to: McAllen City Manager, Child Passenger Safety Week, Passport Awareness Month, Library Card Sign-up Month, Constitution Week and IMAS 50th Anniversary. Regular meetings of the McAllen City Commission are held every second and fourth Monday of the month, at 5pm at the City Commission Chambers on the 3rd floor of McAllen City Hall located at 1300 West Houston Avenue.
