Listowel Castle
Listowel around the castle beside the River Feale
Ballycarbery Castle, Ring of Kerry, Co. Kerry, Ireland
I visited Ballycarbery Castle on September 13, 2013.
Ballycarbery Castle overlooks the sea near the mouth of the Valencia River about 3km from Caherciveen in County Kerry.
The castle is in ruins, and the whole back wall has fallen down. The castle was surrounded by a defensive wall, but more than half of it has gone. You can still see the arrow slits along the remaining parts of the wall. A staircase can be seen inside one part of the wall. The ground floor of the castle had several rooms, of which only one has roof and walls intact. There are two staircases up to the first floor, one of which is still in good condition. The second floor is not accessible, as the stairs were probably against the back wall which has gone.
The present Ballycarbery Castle was built in the 16th century, although there had been an earlier building on the site since the 14th century. It was a seat of the MacCarthy Mores, but may have been occupied by their wardens the O'Connells. During the 1590, it was granted to Sir Valentine Browne in the 1590s after the death of Daniel McCarthy, but was taken back by the Macarthys during the wars between the Royalist and Confederate forces in the 1640s. Oliver Cromwell's troops severely damaged the castle in 1652 when it was attacked with cannons.
Ireland What I Saw. https://youtu.be/VBW4bZTRE4M. https://youtu.be/CkLt2TyHJF0
My Great Grandmother was from Killarney, Kerry, Munster, Ireland. Mary T McCarthy. Born1879 • So I was blessed to see where she was born. When My sister, and I where on the carriage the gentleman guiding it, was telling us his family have been doing carriage rides for four generation from the same farm. If you look at the pictures with the gray castle behind it, Californians would call this mountain a rolling hill. The carriage drive said this was the biggest mountains in Ireland. Ireland has so much untold history that should be shared. So many people died during the potato famine over a million in all. Some where put to rest in the grave yards, where I took some of these pictures,.some of the headstone where cover in grass, some where just a rock. The family of some of the people sleeping there, are long gone now. It was very sad to see all these people that have not had someone visit for a very long time, each gave has a story. I also saw two headstone with the last name of my great grandmother McCarthy, then one with my grandfather last name Reynolds. At the time I did not know the Reynolds where from Ireland, I was not even looking for the last names of any of my family, and bingo right on the walking paths I saw the headstones with two last names I recognize, out of over a million headstones. Ireland is the only place is the world I long to see since I was a child.I knew It would properly be the first, and last time I would see Ireland, So I took all the pictures I could to keep that memory alive. Ireland is a place where the best way to see it, and capture all the beauty that it holds, is by foot or on a Mopeds scooters. The roads are very narrow, so to me that would best way to got off the beaten path. this was only way I could captured some of the pictures on here, along with the pictures of the people that show us their kindness along our way in Ireland. I found this on YouTube It is the perfect song for Ireland I also like the song Danny Boy. That was my husband name. As I was in Ireland, I heard that song on the bus. Ireland is like a walk back in time.To see I Irish history still sanding to this day. When I was there some of the people I talk to I could not understand their strong accent. I would ask what did you say. lol then they ask me what did you say. I was in Dublin. So many people from all over the world travel through Dublin with backpacks. Each speaking the language of the country they came from. The one thing I did miss when I was there, was the spicy food.I had to stop and get some Mexican food when I came home.
Mary T McCarthy her husband was William Charles Sales BIRTH 11 AUG 1881 • Lambeth, London, England.
Puck's castle south Dublin Ireland
Puck's castle wasBuilt with sacred stones from the Bearna Dhearg ringfort and forever cursed by the Púca, that's why its named Puck's Castle.
Puck's castle provided shelter for James II in retreat from the Battle of The Boyne in 1690.
With the assistance of French troops, James landed in Ireland in March 1689. The Irish Parliament did not follow the example of the English Parliament; it declared that James remained King and passed a massive bill of attainder against those who had rebelled against him. At James's urging, the Irish Parliament passed an Act for Liberty of Conscience that granted religious freedom to all Roman Catholics and Protestants in Ireland. James worked to build an army in Ireland, but was ultimately defeated at the Battle of the Boyne on 1 July 1690 when William arrived, personally leading an army to defeat James and reassert English control. James fled to France once more, departing from Kinsale, never to return to any of his former kingdoms. Because he deserted his Irish supporters, James became known in Ireland as Séamus an Chaca or 'James the Shit'

Ballinskelligs Castle | Ring of Kerry | Ireland | DJI Spark
Ballinskelligs Castle, located on a small peninsula at Iveragh Peninsula in Kerry, Ireland. Also known as McCarthy Mór Castle. It is in fact a Tower House and was built in the 16th century by McCarthy Mór. It is thought that it's purpose was twofold. Firstly to protect the bay from pirates and also from which to charge a tariff on incoming trade ships.

Northburg Castle Greencastle Inishowen Co Donegal
The original castle was considered particularly great due to its scale, intricate towers and gatehouse. Unfortunately the sandstone castle was very badly damaged by cannon fire and very little remains of the original building apart from parts of the curtain wall and the remains of a small Norman church.

Barryscourt Castle co. Cork Ireland Bird's-eye view
Barryscourt castle is the 16th century seat of the Barry family. The present castle, with its largely intact bawn wall and corner towers, is a fine example of an Irish tower house. Both the First floor Main Hall and the Second Floor Great Hall have been extensively restored with fittings and furnishings reinstated. The Orchard has been restored to an original 16th century design and an herb garden has been reinstated in the bawn.

Georgia Hirst's must-see Ireland: preview
It’s hard to resist falling in love with Ireland. Just ask Georgia Hirst, from the cast of the hit TV series Vikings!
Discover more at
Cascading waterfalls, acres of rolling green pastures, the sparkling blue waters of the epic coastline… with such natural show-stoppers, it’s no surprise that more and more film and TV productions are choosing Ireland as their star location! Georgia Hirst (Torvi) from Vikings found it hard not to fall in love with her home away from home, so we got her to tell us where and what she loves to do in Ireland!
Fast Facts:
Take any monastic site from Vikings period and a round tower connects them all. It’s widely agreed that monks used these as bell towers, but during raids, the monks would hide both themselves and their valuable chalices, crosses, and gold in the tower’s highest point. The Vikings counteracted this tactic by setting fire to the towers and either smoking the monks out or burning them to death. You can see these towers at Devenish Island, Glendalough, and Clonmacnoise.
Far from being just rampaging warriors, the Vikings also brought civilization to modern Ireland. It seems that the Norsemen were settlers by inclination. The 830s saw their first attacks on Ireland, and by 835 they were attacking the monastery at Clonmacnoise. A mere six years late in 841, the Vikings pulled their longboats out of Lough Neagh, signaling their decision to stay.
Ireland’s oldest city, Waterford, was founded and shaped by Viking settlers. At the heart of Waterford town, you’ll find the Viking Triangle, named after those who first settled there – take a walk around this historic centre and learn more about the Vikings in the three world-class museums here.
These Nordic warriors ruled Dublin City with an iron fist for almost three centuries before their demise at the hands of legendary High King of Ireland, Brian Boru, in the Battle of Clontarf. A walk around the city’s buildings, such as Christ Church Cathedral, gives evidence of their stronghold on Dublin. The bones of Brian Boru lie in the wall of the Church of Ireland Cathedral in Armagh.
Place names around Ireland echo the island’s Viking roots – Wexford, Waterford, Strangford, and Carlingford, for example, are all derive from ‘fjord’, while names with ‘ey’ is a sign of Viking roots also, as ‘ey’ means surrounded by water, such as Dalkey or Ireland’s Eye.
The entire story of Vikings in Ireland told in a colourful and interactive style, make a beeline for Dublinia in Dublin city. Also in Dublin, the Viking Splash Tour is a land and water ride at the hands of friendly Viking guides.
