McCleery Golf Course a beautiful destination
The Vancouver Parks Board owns and operates three championship-length public golf courses. All have been updated to meet the demands of the golfing public, and each has its own charm. Fraserview, one of the busiest courses in Canada, maintains a high degree of playability on a challenging layout. Langara, visited last month, is BC's oldest public course and a piece of living history in the heart of Western Canada's largest city.
The third, McCleery, is on the north bank of the north arm of the Fraser River and tends to fly under the radar a bit with recreational golfers. Yet, in its own way, it is every bit as historic as Langara and kept in as good condition by the grounds crew as almost any course- public or private- in the Lower Mainland.
In the 1860s, the area was settled by the McCleery brothers- one of the first pioneer families to settle in British Columbia- who operated it as a dairy farm until the 1950s. In 1956, the Vancouver Parks Board purchased the land and developed it into a golf course which opened for play in 1959.
Like all the Vancouver Park Board courses, it has been rejuvenated over the years to keep the playing experience enjoyable. In 1996 McCleery was completely redeveloped to a Ted Baker design. The new facilities were opened by Kathy Shave, a great-granddaughter of the founding McCleerys who had also unveiled the course to the public in 1959.
Unlike the other city courses, McCleery is located alongside the last vestige of farmland in the city of Vancouver: the Southlands neighbourhood.
With semi-agricultural zoning, Southlands is home to livestock- mostly horses- and an active equestrian community. The pace of life is a little slower and the roadside waterways home to frogs and fish, attracting herons and eagles, songbirds and coyotes.
The terrain is ideal for golf. It is no surprise that there are four other golf destinations nearby taking advantage of the topography- the private clubs at Marine Drive, Point Grey and Shaughnessy and the bustling golf learning centre at Musqueam.
Today McCleery is a lively centre of play, practice and instruction. There is a 32 stall driving range, a golf academy, fully stocked pro shop and a beautiful clubhouse from the 1996 renovation with a licensed patio looking out on the 9th and 18th greens.

Furry Creek- BC's most scenic golf course
Since opening in 1993, Furry Creek has drawn accolades and astonishment for its setting, design and sheer audacity. Carved into the side of a mountain, riven by streams and chasms, running hard along the shoreline, it is at once supremely challenging and at the same time playable for golfers of most skill levels if you approach it with a healthy attitude.
This is a course that plays you as much as you play it, defying you to elevate your game, use your imagination and get the better of it. Its stunning setting provides no end of visual distractions: mountain, ocean, forest and streams. Its layout across canyons, with blind shots, environmental hazards and elevation shifts, can intimidate the fiercest competitor.
This is not grip-and-rip golf. This is a course where patience, steady nerves and cunning are your closest allies. It is no different from other courses in that you simply have to play the shot in front of you. It is unique in that you will face shots you seldom come across in an order that shakes you out of your driver-iron-putter trance. There are few holes where rote play leads you to the next tee. You must observe, calculate, execute and above all, think.
West Vancouver's Gleneagles Golf Course
One of the best 9 hole courses in Canada.
Having served local golfers since 1927, Greater Vancouver's fifth oldest continuously operated public golf course has a storied past and was well known for its charming eccentricities.
B.C.'s premier golf architect of the day, A.V. Macan, was brought in to produce the nine-hole layout. Having already established a firm reputation by designing a number of prominent BC courses--including Marine Drive (1922) and the original Shaughnessy (1926-27)-- Macan's grasp of the local landscape and climate conditions made him the ideal choice for the new 'Gleneagles' golf course.
Over the decades, Gleneagles had its ups and downs, and was acquired by the District of West Vancouver by municipal plebiscite in 1958. In the late 1990s, the course's historic connection to the community began to be recognized and the District of West Vancouver committed funds to improve the facilities, both on course and off.
Then slowly, all at once everything changed.

Historic Langara Golf Course
In 1924, Macan was engaged by the Canadian Pacific Railway, a major Vancouver landholder, to develop an 18-hole course on a piece of property in South Vancouver bounded by 49th Avenue in the north, West 58th to the south, Ontario Street to the east and Cambie Street to the west.
They called it Langara and it was the first public golf course in British Columbia, opening for play in 1926.

Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course Review!
This is the amazing Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Course in beautiful British Columbia Canada. We played a full round of golf and went a head and had lunch afterwards and want to tell you what we thought of the experience.
We did rent clubs and didn't play with golf shoes but we had an amazing time and the curious and friendly staffed made this an amazingly enjoyable time. This course is a bit harder than the Whistler Golf Club. That club has a slope rating of 120 and Chateau Whistler has one of 130 (on average).
Overall this course is fun to play, requires a bit of accuracy in your shot due to narrower fairways and lots of trees and out of bounds around. There is limited water hazards but ample bunkers.
We hope you enjoyed this video of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Golf Club and our opinions on it. If you want to see more or have suggests for us please leave them in the comments!
Thanks!
