The third day of our West Texas RV trip started awesome, and got more awesome from there.
We used the Davis Mountains State Park as a base camp to explore Fort Davis National Historic Site, the McDonald Observatory, and the Davis Mountains Scenic Loop. We highly recommend all three.
The show-stopper happened at the Davis Mountains State Park. We saw so many bright, colorful birds at the Interpretive center, and got our first lightning shots ever!

The stars at night really are big and bright, deep in the heart of Texas. The University of Texas McDonald observatory is ranked among the top ten observatories in the world. Because of its location in the heart of the Davis Mountains, astronomers have some of the darkest and clearest night skies available in the United States. We take a look at the observatory, and what is done there for science and for the public. Learn more about the Texas night sky at

Camping At Davis Mountains State Park And Visiting The McDonald Observatory
In November of 2017 we traveled down to Big bend National Park and back. On our way back north we spent thre wonderful days camping at Davis Mountains State Park. What a beautiful place! Davis Mountains State Park is now one of my top five favorite Texas State Parks! Stunning vistas, wildlife and best of all peace and quiet! On our second full day camping at Davis Mountains State Park we travel up to the McDonald Observatory to see what we can see and learn what we can learn.
Come along with us on our journey and pay a visit to the Davis Mountains State Park and the McDonald Observatory with us!
