McDowell Creek Falls
Visitors to the crystal clear water of McDowell Creek will be rewarded with the beautiful vistas of Royal Terrace and Majestic Falls from the bridges and viewing decks along the 3 miles of hiking trails of this lush green park. The McDowell Creek Falls offer exceptional scenery for your hiking, nature study and picnicking pleasure. Some fishing and wading is available in the pools below the falls.
Majestic Falls Oregon // Landscape Photography (McDowell Creek Falls)
This week, I went out to McDowell Creek Falls. Majestic Falls is one of the three waterfalls in the McDowell Creek Falls location. In my opinion, this is the only one worth photographing but if you ever make it out there, the other ones are still great to visit! The names being Royal Terrace Falls, the middle one is unnamed, and Majestic Falls. It's just that the others don't quite have the elements in place to create a composition like I try to do. Perhaps I'm wrong and you can get out there and make one happen for yourself!
Make sure you stay until the end to see some maybe gorgeous waterfall photography!? Guess you will have to see for yourself to see if I nailed it or not this time… :)

Best Easy Hike Near Salem Oregon Hike Vlog Friday Episode 11 McDowell Creek Falls
Two beautiful waterfalls outside of Lebanon, Oregon this week, as well as some other adventures. Royal Terrace and Majestic falls were honestly better than we both expected, being so close and short of a hike. And it was a hike that London actually thoroughly enjoyed! :D Hiking in this weather in Oregon is kind of luxury and the spring time makes it absolutely beautiful. Also, THE DRONE IS BACK! DJI Mavic Air Shots for the win!

Royal Terrace Falls -McDowell Creek County Park
While not really the cornerstone of McDowell Creek Falls Park, Royal Terrace Falls is the best of the four waterfalls featured within. The falls occur where Fall Creek drops over the valley wall in an eye catching stair-step style fountain like display. A sign nailed to a tree above the left side of the bridge says the falls drop 119 feet, while we measured the total drop to be about 110 feet, so given the margin of error for our measurement tends to be about 10-15 feet, we feel that the 119 foot figure is probably accurate.
Though Royal Terrace Falls is the biggest and best falls in the modest park, it is also the lowest-volume. Fall Creek doesn't quite run dry during the late summer, but the volume of water does shrink considerably, which in turn renders the falls much less impressive during the dry season. Perhaps the biggest detraction to this waterfall is that Linn County didn't allow for a wide enough buffer zone between the park boundary and an adjacent logged out area, and the bare clear cut hillside is plainly in view from the footbridge at the base of the falls.
Above and more informarion can be found at:
Royal Terrace Falls is the Official name of this waterfall.
McDowell Creek was named for Jack McDowell, an early settler in the area (presumably closer to the mouth of the creek). Royal Terrace Falls was undoubtedly named for its unique terraced appearance which conjures visions of a fountain in a royal palace.
Photo Tips
The footbridge at the base of the falls provides all the viewpoints you'll need for this waterfall. Though there is a little foreshortening, the falls can still be truly appreciated from here. When the surrounding trees are bare, the scene is significantly less attractive (particularly the clear cut immediately adjacent), though during the late autumn months when the maple trees are losing their leaves, the semi-bare trees actually add considerably to the scene. The falls face north and will only see direct sunlight during the longest months of the year. Outside of the early summer, shooting the falls mid-day to early afternoon is not recommended as you'll be shooting directly into the sun as it transits above the falls.

From the junction of Interstate 5 and Highway 20 in Albany, follow Highway 20 east for 20 miles to McDowell Creek Road and turn left. Following McDowell Creek Road, drive another 6.5 miles - watching for signs pointing to McDowell Falls Park - to the main parking lot and park. Take the trail across McDowell Creek, with Lower McDowell Creek Falls immediately downstream, for one-quarter of a mile to the bridge spanning Fall Creek just below the falls. A spur trail climbs up along the right side of the falls to up-close views of the upper tier.
