McGrath Family Farm in Camarillo
McGrath Family Farm is located right off the 101 Freeway in Oxnard, on 505 North Wood Road. You can't miss it going south on the 101 as you approach the Central Avenue off ramp. We stop by often to get fresh, organic produce during the summer. We never go wrong here with the peaches, nectarines and other fresh fruits. But the kids also love this place because for a small fee they'll let you visit with the ducks, goats and other animals and feed them. These animals are quite friendly! Stop on by as you're passing through Oxnard/Camarillo!

The Wine Down - The Ag Biz- McGrath Family Farms (Phil McGrath)
EPISODE SYNOPISIS
This week on The Wine Down Sonja and Brandon are joined by Phil McGrath of McGrath family farms to discuss the world of farming and agriculture. Phil explains his family history, when/why he transitioned to organic farming and the importance of fresh, local and seasonal produce. A few video segments highlight McGrath farms and what goes into CSA produce boxes. Continuing on the discussion from a recent wine challenge of finding wines that pair with vegetables, the group taste a few wines alongside several plates featuring seasonal vegetables (courtesy of Restaurant 111).
GUEST BIO
Phil McGrath -- has been farming on the Oxnard plane for over 40 years. He comes from one of the oldest farming families in Ventura County. His great-grandfather began his agricultural legacy back in 1867 when he came to the states from Ireland as a sheep farmer. The family eventually farmed 5,000 acres in Camarillo and Oxnard transitioning from sheep and cattle, to dairy, and then row crops. Phil carried on this tradition of change by transitioning his conventional ag operation to organic agriculture in 1995. He's never looked back. He says he farms in paradise. Today he has a farm stand along the 101 freeway off of Central Avenue in Camarillo. He's a regular at many local farmers markets, including Santa Monica and Hollywood and works directly with many of the city's best restaurants and chefs.

Vicki Ruiz on Latina Feminist Traditions (1900-1930)
At the turn of the twentieth-century, Luisa Capetillo emerged as a passionate leader in Puerto Rico’s labor movement and later extended her reach into the Caribbean and the United States. Luisa Moreno, the first Latina to hold national office in a major CIO union, is also known for her leadership in organizing the 1939 El Congreso del Pueblo de Habla Española (the Spanish-Speaking People’s Congress), the first national U.S. Latino civil rights conference. Though they never met (Capetillo died at age forty-two when Moreno was only sixteen), their legacies as labor leaders and feminist intellectuals intersect in multiple ways, especially in terms of their unwavering commitment to a radical labor politics. Though starkly divergent, but, at times, hauntingly similar, their feminist writings reveal women’s transnational circuits of knowledge that extended across generations. Vicki Ruiz closely examines and discusses these writings and interwoven feminist traditions.
Vicki Ruiz is Distinguished Professor of History and Chicano/Latino Studies and Chair of the Department of Chicano/Latino Studies at the University of California, Irvine.
