Rare Black Spitting Cobra spotted in Kimberley
A Black Spitting Cobra has found a home at the McGregor Museum in Kimberley in the Northern Cape. The rare species is usually found in the Western Cape, Namibia and western parts of the Northern Cape.
Its sighting in the area has left conservationists baffled. They suspect it may have traveled from western parts of the country to Kimberley. The cobra thrives in dry and arid conditions.

I visited Kimberley with Fly Airlink taking two full days to explore the rich offerings of this area that saw prospectors descend on it to stake their claims with dreams of striking it rich, after diamonds were first discovered here in 1871.
Starting with The Big Hole Complex where I peered into the deepest man made crater in the world, experienced a trip deep into a mine and walked about the old town that still pulsates to the rhythms of a bygone era. Then a visit to the 2nd oldest pup in South Africa, finding street art, time at the McGregor Museum, St Cyprian's Cathedral and a walk across the rail tracks to the cracked muddy shores of Kamfers Dam to see the flamingoes. Taking to the surrounds we visited the Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre where there are as many as 400 engravings and where the history of the !Xun and Khwe San people who now own the land, brings the story full circle. As well as the site where the Battle of Magersfontein took place on 11 December 1899, a significant moment in the Anglo Boer war that saw a victory for the Burghers. A city rich in offerings and well worth time enough to explore at leisure.

Diamonds in Grahamstown - Scifest 2015
The first diamond in South Africa was identified in the Grahamstown. Basil Mills conducts a workshop at Scifest Africa called Diamond in the Rough. He explores the story of the first diamond being discovered in Hope Town, near Kimberly. Participants have an opportunity to become miners by panning as the pioneer miners would have done.
We visit Grahamstown museums to find out more about this first diamond and its significance to the small town.

Wildebeest Kuil Rock Art Centre is a rock engraving site with visitor centre on land owned by the !Xun and Khwe San situated about 16 km from Kimberley, Northern Cape, South Africa.It is a declared Provincial Heritage Site managed by the Northern Cape Rock Art Trust in association with the McGregor Museum.The engravings exemplify one of the forms often referred to as ‘Bushman rock art’ – or Khoe-San rock art – with the rock paintings of the Drakensberg, Cederberg and other regions of South Africa being generally better known occurrences.Differing in technique, the engravings have many features in common with rock paintings.

Wonderwerk Cave is an archaeological site, formed originally as an ancient solution cavity in dolomite rocks of the Kuruman Hills, situated between Danielskuil and Kuruman in the Northern Cape Province, South Africa.It is a National Heritage Site, managed as a satellite of the McGregor Museum in Kimberley.Geologically, hillside erosion exposed the northern end of the cavity, which extends horizontally for about 140 m into the base of a hill.Accumulated deposits inside the cave, up to 7 m in depth, reflect natural sedimentation processes such as water and wind deposition as well as the activities of animals, birds and human ancestors over a period of some 2 million years.

Klipfontein; a Petroglyph Site in South Africa
SOUTH AFRICAN ROCK ART - PART I
Klipfontein is probably the biggest petroglyph site in South Africa. It is on private land (a game reserve, used for hunting, and in-advance permission to visit the site is essential. For advice regarding a visit one could contact the McGregor Museum in Kimberley (address given in the video).
Rock art is very vulnerable and is often located in a sacred spot. This site and many others in southern Africa are of great importance to the San people. Please protect and respect this site.

Recognising the role and the sacrifices of all South Africans during the South African War. That's the story told by the Sol Plaatjes exhibition at the South African War Museum in Bloemfontein, which was official opened by Minister of Arts and Culture Nathi Mthethwa. The Minister used the opportunity to launch Reconciliation Month which he said was aimed at embracing the common ties that unite the nation and opening a process of dialogue on the country's history.
