A Song About Modesto, California - Modesto, The Home I Know - Mick V. Rubalcava
A song written by Mick V. Rubalcava, who is the man who brings you Modesto News .org .
This is an original song written and performed by Mick V. Rubalcava.
Here are the song lyrics:
With all the things I thought I knew
Growing up I never really knew you
But, after searching for my home
It's you I found, it's you I know
-
I know the faces
The people
I know all of the sights and the sounds of a Downtown Festival.
-
I know the voices
That echo
I know the lonely man who refused to grow old.
-
Lo the changes I have seen
Every inch of you holds a memory
My first kiss under the tree
My childhood home, my first baby...
-
I know the street lights
Every road
I know your sweet embrace when I feel so alone
-
I know the trees' sway
In the moon's glow
I know the pathways no one else knows.
-
With all the things I thought I knew
Growing up I never really knew you
But, after searching for my home
I found you, Modesto.
This is a song that I wrote inspired by my own experiences as a teenager when I was forced to live on the streets of Modesto for a period of time. I first really began to love Modesto when Modesto was the one and only place I could call my home. When it was a town, and not a house that I called my home.
This is an acoustic version of the song, and perhaps one day soon I will produce a full band version of the song along with a new music video.
Until then, I am Mick V. Rubalcava. I am here to be your reporter and to capture moments in time on film for you, and for those who will come after us. In addition to filming, I will do what I can to capture the spirit of Modesto with musical performances like this.

Beard Family of Stanislaus County
This promotional video is intended to give a graphic summary of the McHenry Museum and Historical Society’s 2015 quarterly publication of the Stanislaus Stepping Stones:
“The Beard Family of Stanislaus County.”
This issue tells the story the Beard Family coming from England in the 1600s, to Massachusetts, then to North Carolina and eventually to Ohio and Indiana in the 1800s. It was then, that the son of William Beard of Indiana—Elihu Beard decided to come to California in 1850 by way of covered wagon in search of gold.
Elihu eventually settled in the area east of Modesto, outside of Waterford—and made his fortune in dry farming grains and land development. He married Ann Eliza Kennan, and they raised a family of seven children.
The story continues with Thomas Kennan (T.K.) Beard’s family enterprises and succeeding generations that continued to be involved land development, construction, railroads, agriculture, and industry. These resources enriched not only the family, but, also Stanislaus County and the San Joaquin Valley.
This is Volume 39, Number 1-2, Quarterly Journal of the McHenry Museum & Historical Society 2015. If interested in the publication—visit the McHenry Museum and Historical Society, 1402 I Street, Modesto, CA 95354 (A Non-Profit Organization).

Driving through Modesto, California on Highway 99
City of Modesto, is the county seat and largest city of Stanislaus County, California, United States.
Modesto is located in the Central Valley, 90 miles (140 km) north of Fresno, 40 miles (64 km) north of Merced, California, 92 miles (148 km) east of San Francisco, 68 miles (109 km) south of the state capital of Sacramento, 66 miles (106 km) west of Yosemite National Park, and 24 miles (39 km) south of Stockton. Modesto has been honored as a Tree City USA numerous times. It is surrounded by rich farmland; Stanislaus County ranks sixth among California counties in farm production. Led by milk, almonds, chickens, walnuts, and corn silage, the county grossed nearly $3.1 billion in agricultural production in 2011. The farm-to-table movement plays a central role in Modesto living as in the Central Valley.
Filmmaker George Lucas, who was born in Modesto, graduated from Thomas Downey High School in 1962 and attended Modesto Junior College, immortalized the city in his award-winning 1973 film American Graffiti. Although it was not actually shot in Modesto, the film portrayed the spirit of cruising and friendship on Modesto's 10th and 11th Streets in 1962, and inspired a revival of interest in 1950s pop culture, including the TV show Happy Days and its spin-offs.
The city's annual Architectural Festival honors Modesto's history as a testing ground for mid-century modern architecture during the 1940s and '50s. Modesto's mid-century buildings have been featured four times in Museum of Modern Art publications.
The Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index for 2011, which interviews 1,000 participants about their jobs, finances, physical health, emotional state of mind and communities, ranked Modesto 126 out of the 190 cities surveyed. In December 2009, Forbes ranked Modesto 48th out of 100 among Best Bang-for-the-Buck Cities. In this ranking, Modesto ranked 8th in housing affordability and travel time but also ranked 86th in job forecast growth and 99th in foreclosures
