The Vineyards of McLaren Vale with UB40
Taking a trip through some of our favourite vineyards along with the associated wineries in McLaren Vale. I am not going to pick any specials as we just enjoy a glass wine along with a special meal.
The Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale are arguably the two most famous regions in South Australia if not Australia. The Barossa is a hot continental climate but the numerous valleys and hills produce a wide range of microclimates within the area. Meanwhile, McLaren Vale’s Mediterranean climate is greatly influenced by the ocean, and McLaren Vale is famous for it’s long warm days and short cool nights.
The Barossa produces generous wines with juicy fruit and unmatched depth and length. These are big wines and you often need to accompany them with food to get through the whole bottle.
McLaren Vale produces softer, more approachable wines with great fruit intensity and spicy complexity. Whenever we throw a cocktail party McLaren Vale Shiraz is always our go–to wine (they just go down so easy).
Keep in mind that the soil, altitude and the slope of the vineyard a wine comes from will of course have a great affect on the style and flavours. Each wine you drink will be a reflection of the site it has been grown on.
UB40 have always been a favourite of mine and they will often be on the playlist in the car when travelling the long distances we do here in Australia. Now you will be in your 40’s if you remember this song as being a hit.
A bit of trivia with regards to this song. As it turns out, British reggae stars of yesteryear UB40 didn't know who they were covering when they recorded their 1983 hit Red Red Wine, the Financial Times reports. Under the assumption that the song originated with a little-known Jamaican singer, the group mis-credited the writer. Even when we saw the writing credit which said ‘N Diamond,’ we thought it was a Jamaican artist called Negus Diamond, said Astro, the group's former vocalist and trumpet player. In fact, this particular Diamond originated from the songwriting mine that is America, with Neil — not Negus — laying the track down on his second effort, 1967's Just for You. Due to the confusion, UB40 would credit N. Diamond for the song.
Originally, Diamond’s Red Red Wine was a sentimental ballad that revolves around getting drunk to forget one’s sadness. The idea to add an island influence to the song began with Jamaican singer Tony Tribe in 1969. His cover's success would pale in comparison to UB40's own reggae-based take — reaching No. 1 on both U.K. and U.S. charts.
For his part, Diamond’s love for the cover was far from being on the rocks. It ain’t no surprise that he ranks the rendition among his favorites, right along with Frank Sinatra's version of Sweet Caroline” and Urge Overkill’s Girl, You'll Be a Woman Soon, featured in the movie “Pulp Fiction.”
Best watched in HD.
As always just having a bit of fun and sharing the sites of South Australia that we have visited.
I have also played around with some new transitions to get a feel of what they look like.
Take care and stay safe.
