McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve
In 1990, General Motors of Canada Limited celebrated the construction of their new green Canadian Corporate Headquarters as well as the creation of the McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve. Named after the automakers' founder, Col. Sam McLaughlin, the Reserve has become a popular attraction for lovers of nature and peaceful surroundings. The Reserve occupies in excess of 41 ha (108 acres) of land owned and operated by General Motors of Canada Limited. An additional 40 ha of the same tract has been set aside for the office complex, parking and services, along with adequate buffer zones.
Home to almost 400 different varieties of plants, trees, shrubs and wildflowers, as well as a great number of native birds, mammals and fish, the McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve features a number of walking trails, viewing platforms for photographers and birdwatchers as well as the Dogwood Trail, for use by partially-sighted or visually-impaired visitors. It is open to the public seven days a week, year-round, free of charge, and is wheel-chair accessible. A series of 11 trails in network of McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve - connected to Second Marsh Wildlife Area and Darlington Provincial Park - part of provincial waterfront system.
The abandoned field separating Col. Sam Drive and the east side of Second Marsh will perhaps be developed someday as per the original site plan agreement between General Motors of Canada Limited. and the City of Oshawa. The plan calls for the development of a prestige business park, and as these various parcels are leased, they will be developed in adherence to a strict code designed to protect the integrity of the Second Marsh. There will be no loss of wetlands as a result.

What Is Oshawa Known For?
What is Oshawa known for? Dan Plowman here from Dan Plowman Team Realty and I want to answer the question for you what is Oshawa known for.
Most tourist never venture far from the Greater Toronto Metropolitan Area. This is rather sad when you consider that a mere 60 kilometers from downtown Toronto lies one of Ontario Canada's best-kept secrets; Oshawa.
Located on the Shore of Lake Ontario, Oshawa has a history going back to the fur traders or voyagers of the 1700s who established an independent trading post there. Today it is considered the anchor point of both The Golden Horseshoe and Greater Toronto.
For all its history Oshawa has remained a city on the cutting edge. When the automotive industry took off in the mid-1870s it became the car capital of Canada and home to McLaughlin Carriage Company, now known as General Motors Canada which is still headquartered in the city. When growth in this sector slowed it moved on to brighter pastures and is now a hub for health sciences and education as well as being home to a Regional Innovation Centre and IT sector. In fact, Oshawa is considered one of the top five cities in Canada in which to seek employment across several sectors.
While economics and education are always driving forces in any community, Oshawa offers much more than just job and educational opportunities. It is a well rounded and vibrant city with something to offer everyone; single, married, young or old.
Oshawa is home to over 70 restaurants and that number is growing at an astounding rate. From Southern BBQ to Vegetarian Indian. Cuisine of all sorts, the city has something to offer every taste. There are fine dining establishments and Food Trucks to be visited. Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Mexican and fusion restaurants of all types are popping up on every street and the city is alive with young imaginative chefs vying to make a name for themselves and helping put Oshawa on the culinary map as a must visit location.
Just as Oshawa is alive with outdoor activities. There are several parks spread around the city that are great for a quick run, getting the kids outsides or enjoying a quiet lunch. And, it mustn't be forgotten that the nearby McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve has over seven kilometres of cycling and walking trails that are open to the public year-round. It has three entry points, two car parks and several information booths and picnic areas to be enjoyed.
Oshawa offers those who prefer to spend their time indoors as much if not more than the nature lover. Not surprisingly, there is the Canadian Automotive Museum where you will find an ecliptic collection of automobiles dating back to 1902. The nearby Ontario Regiment Museum that features the largest collection of armoured vehicles in Canada is a must see. For art lovers, the Robert McLaughlin Gallery offers over 4500 works of modern art to be browsed and of course, there is The Parkwood Estate former home to the founder of General Motors Canada and the setting for movies like X-Men, Chicago, Billy Madison, and It.
To state it simply the nightlife offering in Oshawa are too numerous to even try to describe. You want to go where everyone knows your name there are bars just like that, that will take you back to that feeling that Cheers once showed and felt. You love 70's Disco; this is the place to be, its here. Lighted dance floor, Oshawa has it all. Country is your bag, maybe you love country music. Great place for country music as well; pick an era, pick a setting. You won't go wrong, Oshawa's a great spot.
I think you get the idea. If you want it, Oshawa has it.
Thanks so much for watching our video on what is Oshawa known for.

Fire destroys portion of sensitive Second Marsh
Police continuing weekend investigation in suspicious fire of Second Marsh Wildlife Area and McLaughlin Bay Wildlife Reserve in Oshawa on April 29, 2012.
Oshawa
Oshawa is a city in Ontario, Canada, on the Lake Ontario shoreline. It lies in Southern Ontario approximately 60 kilometres east of downtown Toronto. It is commonly viewed as the eastern anchor of the Greater Toronto Area and of the Golden Horseshoe. It is the largest municipality in the Regional Municipality of Durham. The name Oshawa originates from the Ojibwa term aazhaway, meaning the crossing place or just (a)cross.
Oshawa’s roots are tied to the automobile industry, specifically the Canadian division of General Motors Company, known as General Motors Canada. Founded in 1876 as the McLaughlin Carriage Company, General Motors of Canada's headquarters are located in the city. The automotive industry was the inspiration for Oshawa's previous mottos: The City That Motovates Canada, and The City in Motion. The lavish home of the carriage company's founder, Parkwood Estate, is a National Historic Site of Canada, and a backdrop favoured by numerous film crews, featured in many movies including Studio 54, Billy Madison, Chicago, and X-Men.
