Hiking Mount Meakan (雌阿寒岳 Meakan-Dake) Hokkaido, Japan - Akan National Park
Hiking Mount Meakan in Hokkaido, Japan. Saturday June 6th 2015.
Mount Meakan, 雌阿寒岳 Meakan-Dake, is an active stratovolcano located in Akan National Park in Hokkaidō, Japan. At 1,499m, it is the highest mountain in the Akan Volcanic Complex.
Just two days before we climbed this mountain, an earthquake with a seismic intensity level of 7 struck the Lake Akan region. We believe this could have caused an increase in sulfuric gas activity at the volcano's crater. Because of this combined with strong wind and thick cloud, it was not possible to reach the summit. We turned back as we approached the ninth station.
Heading down the mountain, some of the clouds cleared and we saw a beautiful view of Lake Onneto and the surrounding hills and valleys below.
This is a beautiful mountain to hike. Climbed it or would like to? Share your thoughts below.

Hiking in Japan (Hokkaido) - View from the summit of Meakandake volcano, Akan National Park
Panorama taken from the rim of the active Meakandake volcano on Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. The cone-shaped volcano at the beginning of the video (with the clouds racing over its top) is called Akan Fuji (i.e. the Mount Fuji of the Akan area). The bright blue-green pond that fills a volcanic crater is called, not surprisingly, Aonuma (Blue Pond). Video taken on July 20, 2012. mountainhikingholidays.com

A view to Mount Meakan--dake, Japan
An unpolished edit of the view I had on the 8th of June 2015 of the Meakan-Dake volcano in Japan. This is made while still on the road so iI used youtube's stabilizer and you hear mainly noise from the wind blowing into the camera. The fumes you see are gasses which are not healthy, but still at safe levels.

神秘の湖 冬のオンネトー Lake Onneto.
Lake Onneto, which is situated 623m above sea level, is part of Akan National Park (east of Ashoro Town), one of the three great secret lakes in Hokkaido. The lake was created when the river was dammed up due to the volcanic eruption of Mt. Meakan-dake, and the name, “Onneto” means old pond or big pond in the original Ainu language. Since its surface beautifully changes color depending on the time of day or the season, the lake is also called Goshikinuma.
Must Do Activities in Akan, Akan-Mashu National Park Hokkaido
The playground for nature lovers. There are trails where you can see magnificent volcanic scenes, a misty morning lake to paddle through, and the trout attracts anglers worldwide. The culture of Ainu has been passed down to generations here and speaks to you their philosophy of co-existing with nature.

Lake Mashu is a caldera lake in Akan National Park. Although often covered by fog, it once held the world record for water clarity.
Mt Mashu (摩周岳 Mashudake) towers above the shore. Its Ainu name is Kamuinupuri or mountain of the gods. The lake also retains its Ainu name Kamuito or lake of the gods.
Kamuishu, the small island, is the peak of the lava hill. Kamuishu rises 230 metres from the bottom of the lake. In Ainu kamuishu means an old woman who became a god.
According to an Ainu legend a strong tribe chief was killed in a war, and his mother was running about to escape in dark fields and mountains with her grandchild.
But the mother lost the child and ranged through the woods looking for the beloved one. Finally she arrived at the shore of Lake Mashu, where she asked for Mt Kamuinupuri’s permission to rest. While taking a rest she transformed herself to an isle because of fatigue and sadness.
The Shiretoko National Park 知床国立公園 on the Shiretoko Peninsula is one of Japan's most beautiful and unspoiled national parks. No roads lead further than about three fourths up the peninsula, and the northern tip can only be viewed from boats or be reached by trekking.
The peninsula is home to a variety of wildlife, including brown bears, dear and foxes.
In winter, Shiretoko's coast along the Sea of Okhotsk becomes one of the northern hemisphere's southernmost regions to see drift ice.
In 2005, Shiretoko was added to the list of world heritage sites for the irreplaceable value of the peninsula's ecosystem and biodiversity.
Kamuiwakka-no-taki カムイワッカの滝 Shiretoko National Park 知床国立公園
Kamuiwakkanotaki falls are located on the Shiretoko Peninsula, which is the easternmost shore of Hokkaido. In Ainu kamuiwakka means river of gods and shiruitoku the end of the earth.
Kamuiwakka is one of the most unique open air hot springs (rotenburo). Actually, it is a cascading thermal river with a series of falls and outdoor pools.
Kamuiwakka is so popular among young Japanese that many of them visit Shiretoko just for this fantastic experience.
