Sargan Eight Railway - Mokra Gora - Serbia
The Sargan Eight (Šarganska osmica) is an old-fashioned narrow-gauge railway in West Serbia, running from the traditional looking village of Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi station. The Shargan “Eight” railroad has got its name because the above sea level of 300m is overcome by the rise upon the hills in the convoluted circles in the shape of number eight. Its construction was finished in 1925. After a long period of inactivity, the railway was finally restored and reopened in 1995. The Šargan eight, with track gauge of 760 mm, represents the most attractive museum tourist railway line with narrow gauge track in the Balkans. The railway passes through the most beautiful landscapes in Mokra Gora, over 5 bridges and 22 tunnels, making the shape of number eight. The journey takes approx. 3 h with several stops for photography and refreshments. Don’t miss the village Drvengrad which sits just a few minutes of walk from the Mokra Gora’s Sargan Eight station. It is a wooden village built by famous director Emir Kusturica for his move “Life is a Mircale”.

Šarganska osmica, Šargan Eight - Mokra Gora, Serbia.
The Šarganska osmica or Šargan Eight, is a narrow-gauge heritage railway in Serbia, running from the village of Mokra Gora to Šargan Vitasi station. An extension to Višegrad was finished on 28 August 2010. It was planned to extend the railway to the city of Užice. Construction began during World War I and the plan was to connect Serbia with Austro-Hungary, which occupied both Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina at the time. Šargan was located 9 km away from the pre-war border. Austrians enlisted numerous Russian and Italian prisoners of war in order to speed up the construction. During the digging of the, Budim tunnel, the ceiling collapsed killing the entire shift of workers. The works were halted and were only continued in 1921, in the newly formed Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes.
The construction of the railway was completed in 1921. A descent of 300 m was surmounted with the tracks which curve in the shape of 8, hence the name. The track is 15.44 km long and due to the curvature, on some sections the train passes twice through the same points.
In total, there are 22 tunnels and 5 bridges on the route. The entire area is abundant in water, which gave name to the village Mokra Gora, Wet Mountain. There are 365 known water springs along the route. The water is literally dripping down the tunnel walls. The railway, with a gauge of 760 mm was an important part of the former narrow-gauge main line from Belgrade to Sarajevo, and closed in 1974. Between 1999 and 2003 the section over the Šargan pass was rebuilt by the Serbian Ministry of Tourism and the Yugoslav state railway, now the Serbian railways. They have done a great job. They re-laid the tracks, they renovated or rebuilt all the railway stations of the Šargan Eight.
As of 2017, the train popularly named Ćira but officially called Nostalgia, still runs only on the route Mokra Gora-Šargan, with occasionally running to Višegrad. During the snowy periods, it runs only from Mokra Gora to Jatare. In 2017 season it had 75,000 visitors, out of which 25,000 were foreign tourists. Attractions include the restaurant carved into the rock at Šargan and a rock named crazy stone at Golubići, which invokes love.
In 2019, new reconstruction of the tunnels began. Works should be finished by 2021, a centennial of the railroad. Today's travelers may not have such strong feelings, but their childhood memories may well stir suddenly awake. For many of us the journey on that great little train will be more than just a charming travel experience, it will be a flashback to our own childhood days, to the bygone days we sometimes miss, to the sights and sounds that won our hearts long ago and remain with us, forever.

Mecavnik, Drvengrad, Küstendorf Srbija!! Travel to Serbia Mecavnik
Drvengrad is also known as Küstendorf, as a word play on German dorf (village) and Kusturica's nickname, Kusta. Also, Küste is German for coast. Kusturica has also been known to call it Mećavnik, which is the name of the neighbouring village.
Drvengrad has a library, named the Ivo Andrić Library; an artist gallery named Macola in honor of sculptor Dragan Jovićević (it was previously known as Anika, after a character from Ivo Andrić's prose); Stanley Kubrick Cinema; a main house which houses a cinema-hall in the cellar, a living room, a guest room, a closed yard, a swimming pool, a gymnasium, a sauna and private rooms for the Kusturica family; a sports hall; a restaurant; a cake shop, as well as a souvenir shop; and finally, a Church dedicated to St. Sava.
Nearby is also a ski slope with four trails, as well as a hotel named Mladost (Youth).
The streets in the village bear the names of various individuals that Kusturica holds in high esteem or finds to be personally significant: Nikola Tesla, Ernesto Che Guevara, Diego Maradona, Miodrag Petrović Čkalja, Federico Fellini, Ingmar Bergman, Joe Strummer, Novak Đoković and of course, Ivo Andrić, after whom the main street is named.
A Day in Bizarre Mokra Gora, Serbia
There is no way to describe the bizarre, made for tourists village of Mokra Gora also called Drvengrad, also called Kustendorf of Mecavnik. That was confusing enough but this is one of those places you have to see to believe.
Conceived and built by famous Serbian film director Emir Kusturica as a movie set for his movie, Life is a Miracle, this just about sums it up. Streets are named after individuals like Fredeico Fellina, Ingmar Bergman and even Diego Maradona! Unusual sculptures. Even a life-sized statue of Johhny Depp. Weird, fun to visit for a few hours or stay overnight as we did.
