Places to see in ( L'Estartit - Spain )
L'Estartit is a small town and seaside resort on the Costa Brava, on the north-eastern coast of Spain. L'Estartit is situated between the foothills of the Montgrí Massif and the Mediterranean Sea, and L'Estartit is part of the municipality of Torroella de Montgrí, in the Baix Empordà county, Girona province, autonomous community of Catalonia.
L'Estartit stretches North-South from Cala Montgó, at the southern tip of the Bay of Roses (Badía de Roses) to the Ter River estuary in the Bay of Pals (Badía de Pals). East-West it extends three kilometres inland from the shoreline, and includes the hills of Roca Maura and Torre Moratxa. A kilometre off shore lies the Illes Medes archipelago, composed of various uninhabited islands. The area has been protected by Natural Park status and is home to many different species of flora and fauna, both above and below the waterline.
Initially a fishing village, the advent of tourism in the Costa Brava from the 1960s onwards brought a large influx of visitors to the town during the summer months. The community grew exponentially for the next two decades, initially with houses and villas built up the hills that surround the harbour, and later with hotels, apartment blocks and campsites extending along the beach and the flood plain of the Ter estuary.
The tourist industry also led to a large immigrant population (mostly from other parts of Spain), needed to serve the ever-growing number of visitors. Tourists visiting L'Estartit originate mainly from France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands, whilst the majority of the labour force hails from the south of Spain, especially Andalusia.
Like many other tourist resorts around the world, massification and uncontrolled growth led the town to lose the charm that had made it popular in the first place. Tourism has been dwindling since the 1990s. However the underwater beauty of the Illes Medes, the large and well-equipped sports marina and the abundance of nearby golf courses keep divers, sailors and golfers coming back year after year and has seen a revival in the area's fortunes. There was a LORAN-C transmitter of the Mediterranean Sea Chain in L'Estartit, which has now been demolished.

L'Estartit - An amazing marine reserve
L'Estartit is located in the Spanish region of Catalonia at the northern end of the Costa Brava. The resort is approximately one hour’s drive from the airfield at Girona.
L'Estartit's location, between the mountains and the plain of the River Ter, gives it the dual advantages of 15 kilometres of beautiful rocky coastline together with one of the longest sandy beaches on the Costa Brava.
The Roca Maura towers over the well facilitated holiday destination of L'Estartit. Originally a small fishing village, a carefully managed development over a number of years, has created a charming small scale resort, which takes full advantage of its glorious coastal position and stunning scenery.

SPAIN: PLEASURE BOAT ACCIDENT AFTERMATH
Spanish/Nat
The northeastern Spanish town of Llorat de Mar was in shock on Friday after the deaths of 20 French tourists in a pleasure boat accident.
The survivors of Thursday's incident are in Llorat de Mar for medical treatment and police questioning.
On Thursday, an electric-powered catamaran was pulling away from its mooring for a half hour trip over a mountain-surrounded lake at Banyoles, 565 kilometers (350 miles) northeast of Madrid, when it sank.
A mood of deep sadness hung over the Central Park hotel in the Spanish town of Llorat de Mar on Friday.
It's here that survivors of a boating accident at nearby Banyoles have been taken - for medical treatment and to be questioned by police.
Most were still in deep shock only one day after the tragic incident in which 20 French tourists were killed.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
The music was so loud that people started screaming but the captain could not hear them.
SUPER CAPTION: Marie-Therese Huguet, survivor
Many however, also expressed profound anger at what had happened.
SOUNDBITE: (French)
There was no security on board. Once I tried to put the life tyre around me, I couldn't detach it from the boat and the chairs were not fixed to the boat. Q. What about your wife? I loved her, she died.
SUPER CAPTION: Lucien Pinatelle, survivor
At Banyoles, 565 kilometers (350 miles) northeast of Madrid, the lake is picturesque and surrounded by mountains.
On Thursday a group of tourists had boarded this electric powered catamaran for a half hour cruise on the calm waters.
But, as it was pulling away from its mooring it began to sink.
Police divers on Friday began the task of trying to raise the boat.
The search also continued for two people authorities believe may have been on the craft but have not yet been accounted for.
Officials say overloading appears the most likely cause.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
The big hypothesis is that the boat was overloaded, it was licenced for 68 people but on board there were 140.
SUPER CAPTION: Juan Solana, Mayor of Banyoles
But they are pursuing other lines of inquiry.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
The second hypothesis is to prove whether there was a technical failure on the boat.
SUPER CAPTION: Juan Solana, Mayor of Banyoles
In the provincial capital of Girona, a judge was to hear testimony from the directors of the La Carpa firm which owns the catamaran.
Some survivors have also been taken to the town to speak with authorities.
SOUNDBITE: (Spanish)
From now on the legal system takes over and all the victims will hear their rights and if they have any claims we will go along according to the law.
SUPER CAPTION: Carlos Cruz, chief judge
Two of the injured survivors are believed to be in a serious condition, but the remainder are expected to be allowed to travel back to France within the day.
Repatriation of the bodies is also set to begin late on Friday.

En un lugar como L'Edtartit, con poca elección gastronómica, fue una maravilla encontrar un sitio así. El servicio excelente y muy agradable. Las paellas deliciosas y la receta de mejillones sorprendente. Un lugar estupendo.

L'Estartit is a holiday resort and former fishing village on the Costa Brava in Spain, where tourism has only been established since the 1960s. It is a suburb of Torroella de Montgrí with 3,230 inhabitants (2011).
L'Estartit is situated at the transition from a rocky cliff to a ten-kilometer-long, fine sandy beach in the lowlands of the River Ter, which flows south to the Mediterranean Sea after 208 km. Until the 19th century Fischerendorf was developed as a highly frequented holiday destination with its own marina.
The island group of the Illes Medes, a well-known natural reserve with a unique underwater flora and fauna in the Mediterranean, is situated on the island. To the north of the village is the massif Massís del Montgrí, near the town of Roca Maura (226 m) and Torre Moratxa (218 m). Further in the direction of Torroella de Montgrí is the Castell Montgrí built at the end of the 13th century on Montgrí mountain.

The Costa Brava (Catalan and Spanish for wild coast) is the northeastern coastal strip on the Spanish Mediterranean coast in the autonomous region of Catalonia. The writer Ferran Agulló (born 1863 in Sant Feliu de Guíxols) coined her name in the magazine La Veu de Catalunya in the edition of 12 September 1908.
The approximately 220-kilometer-long Costa Brava stretches from the foothills of the Pyrenees on the Franco-Spanish border near Portbou to the south and south-west to the Tordera estuary near Blanes. To the south is the Costa del Maresme with the province of Barcelona; The city of Barcelona is about 60 km from the southern edge of the Costa Brava.
The coastal line comprises, from north to south, the following municipalities:
Alt Empordà (High Ampurdan), the beach with small fishing boats in the center of Cadaqués, Portbou (northern gate to the Costa Brava), Colera, Llançà, El Port de la Selva, Cadaqués, Roses, Castelló d'Empúries, Empuriabrava, Sant Pere Pescador, L'Escala
Baix Empordà (Lower Ampurdan), Torroella de Montgrí, L'Estartit district, Pals, Platja de Pals district, Begur, Palafrugell, Palamós, Calonge, Sant Antoní de Calonge district, Castell-Platja d'Aro, Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Selva, Tossa de Mar, Lloret de Mar, Blanes (southern gate to the Costa Brava)

Costa Brava is the name given to the Catalan coast on the Mediterranean Sea, located in the North-East of Catalonia, in the Province of Girona. It starts from Portbou, next to the French border, and extends for 160 kilometers and 255 kilometers from the jagged profile of the Costa Brava to Blanes, at the mouth of the Tordera River. It is bordered on the north by the Vermeille coast which is the geomorphological continuation and, on the south, by the Costa del Maresme.
Costa Brava means in Catalan abrupt coast in reference to its rocky and fragmented coastline. The Catalan phrase costa brava abrupt coast has existed for a very long time as a common nominal phrase. On the other hand, the use of Costa Brava as a proper name, especially to designate the area in question, was first launched in 1908 in the newspaper La Veu de Catalunya by the poet Ferran Agulló, when the place inspired artists and rare tourists by its immaculate beauty. On September 29, 1963, the City Council of Sant Feliu de Guíxols inaugurated a commemorative stone at the hermitage of Sant Elm, a promontory south of the city with a chapel dating back to 1696, the very place that inspired the author.
The Baix Empordà which is highlighted in this video, region of the creeks, occupies the center of the Costa Brava. We can mention the small town of Torroella de Montgrí and its tourist center of L'Estartit from where you can visit the marine reserve of the Medes Islands, facing the Montgrí massif; the coves of Begur (Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Fornells, Aiguablava), those of Palafrugell (Calella, Llafranc, Tamariu) and admire the landscape that can be seen from the lighthouse of Sant Sebastià. Also of great interest are visits to the Iberian village of Ullastret and the medieval towns of Monells, Pals and Peratallada, perfectly restored. The major tourist centers of the region are Palamós, Castell-Platja d'Aro and Sant Feliu de Guíxols. The capital of the region is La Bisbal d'Empordà, a locality whose tradition in the artisanal production of ceramics has survived thanks to the activity of a large number of master craftsmen. The history and evolution of this ceramist tradition are told in the Terracota-Museum of Ceramics of La Bisbal.
