Κάστρο Μεγίστης / Castle of Megisti, Greece

Το κάστρο που αποκαλείται και Κάστρο των Ιπποτών του Αγίου Ιωάννη ή Κάστρο της Μεγίστης, δεσπόζει πάνω από τον οικισμό, στην κορυφή του Καστέλλο Ρόσο, του κόκκινου βράχου απ’ όπου πήρε το όνομά του το νησί.

Το νησί κατοικήθηκε από τη νεολιθική ακόμα εποχή όπως μαρτυρούν τα λείψανα από κυκλώπεια τείχη στη θέση του κάστρου, που πρέπει να είχε οχυρωθεί για πρώτη φορά από τους Πελασγούς. Κατά την Μυκηναϊκή εποχή, το νησί γνώρισε μεγάλη άνθηση και συμμετείχε και στον Τρωικό πόλεμο. Αργότερα, εποικήθηκε από τους Δωριείς οι οποίοι το ονόμασαν Μεγίστη, μάλλον επειδή ήταν το μεγαλύτερο από τα γύρω ερημονήσια.

Κατά την Ελληνιστική περίοδο η Μεγίστη ελέγχονταν από τους ισχυρούς Ροδίους αποτελώντας κομμάτι των κατακτήσεών τους στην ιστορική Καρία της Μ. Ασίας, από το 167 π.Χ. μέχρι και τον 2ο αιώνα μ.Χ. Αυτό επιβεβαιώνεται από επιγραφές στο Κάστρο των Ιπποτών.

Κατά τους Βυζαντινούς χρόνους περιλαμβάνεται στο «Θέμα των Κυβυραιωτών», όπως και η Ρόδος. Το 1306 κατελήφθη από τους Ιππότες του Τάγματος του Αγίου Ιωάννη υπό τον Μέγα Μάγιστρο Φουλκ ντε Βιλλαρέ. Αυτό συνέβη 3 χρόνια πριν την κατάκτηση της Ρόδου. Κατά κάποιο τρόπο, το Κατελλόριζο υπήρξε ο ενδιάμεσος σταθμός κατά τη μετακίνηση του τάγματος από την Κύπρο στη Ρόδο και πριν την οριστική εγκατάστασή τους στα Δωδεκάνησα, όπου παρέμειναν κυρίαρχοι για 2,5 αιώνες.

Περίπου τότε, στις αρχές του 14ου αιώνα, οι Ιππότες έκτισαν το κάστρο πάνω σε θέση όπου προϋπήρχε αρχαία ακρόπολη και μικρό βυζαντινό φρούριο. Το κάστρο είναι κτισμένο σε κόκκινο βράχο που έδωσε το όνομά του στο κάστρο, “Castello Rosso”, και στη συνέχεια, εκ παραφθοράς, σε ολόκληρο το νησί.

Το Καστελόριζο αργότερα χρησιμοποιήθηκε σαν τόπος εξορίας και το κάστρο σαν φυλακή για απείθαρχους ιππότες. Το νησί ήταν απομακρυσμένο από την υπόλοιπη επικράτεια των Ιωαννιτών και για το λόγο αυτό περισσότερο εκτεθειμένο σε εξωτερικούς κινδύνους και επιδρομές. Η ιστορία του κατά το Μεσαίωνα υπήρξε πιο πολυκύμαντη από άλλες κτήσεις των Ιωαννιτώνς.

Το 1440 το Καστελλόριζο καταλήφθηκε από τον Αιγύπτιο Σουλτάνο Τζεμάλ Ελ-Ντιν που κατέστρεψε το κάστρο και έσυρε όλους τους κατοίκους του στα σκλαβοπάζαρα της Ανατολής.

Το 1450 το νησί καταλήφθηκε από τον Αλφόνσο E’ Ντ’ Αραγκόν (Alfonso V d'Aragona, 1396-1458), βασιλιά της Νάπολης ο οποίος ήταν σύμμαχος τότε των Ιπποτών και ο οποίος ξανάκτισε το κάστρο.

Το 1480, το νησί ερημώνεται και πάλι από τους Τούρκους, ενώ το 1498 το ανακαταλαμβάνουν οι δυνάμεις του βασιλείου της Νάπολης. Το 1523 ακολούθησε τη μοίρα της Ρόδου και των υπόλοιπων Δωδεκανήσων και κατακτήθηκε από τους Οθωμανούς υπό τον Σουλεϊμάν Α΄ τον Μεγαλοπρεπή. Το 1659 σε ένα επεισόδιο της ενετοτουρκικής σύγκρουσης για την Κρήτη, κατελήφθη για λίγο από τους Ενετούς για να ξαναπεράσει πολύ γρήγορα υπό τουρκικό έλεγχο.

Το κάστρο καταστράφηκε το 1788 από τον Λάμπρο Κατσώνη κατά την προσπάθεια απελευθέρωσης του νησιού από τους Τούρκους.

The island is roughly rectangular in shape, with a length of 21 km (13 mi) and a width of 13 km (8 mi), and covers an area of 109 square kilometres (42 sq mi). Moreover, on the north side there is a peninsula which stretches in a northwest direction.

Kalymnos is mainly mountainous with complicated topography. There are three main chains going from W-NW to E-SE, and a fourth which innervates the peninsula. The coastline is very irregular, with many sheltered coves. There are some springs, one among them being thermal. The soil is mainly limestone-based, but in the valleys there is a compact bank of volcanic tuff, the relic of an ancient volcano, located near the village of Kantouni. The island is mainly barren, except for the two fertile valleys of Vathi and Pothia, where olives, oranges and vines are grown.

Earthquakes are a frequent occurrence around Kalymnos.

The island's Hellenistic Temple of Apollo was excavated by the British archaeologist Charles Newton in the nineteenth century; many of the finds he made, including important epigraphic inscriptions, are in the British Museum's collection.[5] In the Middle Ages it was under the influence of the Byzantine Empire, and during the 13th century it was used by the Venetian Republic as a naval base. In 1310 it came under the control of the Knights of Rhodes, and later (mainly in 1457 and 1460) was often attacked by the Ottomans, who eventually conquered it in 1522. Unlike Rhodes and Kos, during the Ottoman period there was no Turkish immigration to Kalymnos.

On May 12, 1912, during the Italo-Turkish War, Kalymnos was occupied by Italian sailors of the Regia Marina. Italy took control of the island along with other islands of the Dodecanese (except Kastellorizo initially) until 1947, when the Dodecanese were finally united with mainland Greece, as part of the modern Greek state.

Dodecanese

The Dodecanese are a group of 12 larger plus 150 smaller Greek islands in the Aegean Sea, of which 26 are inhabited. Τhis island group generally defines the eastern limit of the Sea of Crete. They belong to the Southern Sporades island group. They have a rich history, and many of even the smallest inhabited islands boast dozens of Byzantine churches and medieval castles.
The most historically important and well-known is Rhodes, which, for millennia, has been the island from which the region is controlled. Of the others, Kos and Patmos are historically more important; the remaining nine are Astipalea, Kalimnos, Karpathos, Kasos, Leros, Nisyros, Symi, Tilos and Kastellorizo. Other islands in the chain include Agathonisi, Alimia, Arkoi, Chalki, Farmakonisi, Gyali, Kinaros, Levitha, Lipsi, Marathos, Nimos, Pserimos, Saria, Stroggyli, Syrna and Telendos.
