Strolling in Murten (Switzerland) on a quiet Sunday, Dec. 2015
On the western border between German and French speaking Switzerland is a small community hunkered beside a lake with two names, just like the town. Murten is the German version, Morat the French. Still enclosed by medieval walls, this is an eye-catching place where real people still live day in and day out. We happened to be there during worship hour on a Sunday, so had the streets to ourselves...and we were in the Christmas mood. You will be too, especially because of the lovely music prepared by friends at The First Church in Jaffrey, NH.
How it looks the Castle..City and Lake of Murten ????????Watch full video and sure you love it ????????????
History of Murten
The history of a small medieval town.
Murten is situated on the north-south route (E4 & A1) between Berne and Lausanne and is the capital of the Lake District of the canton of Fribourg. This small medieval town lies in the Swiss «Midlands» on the edge of the Great Marsh, on a gentle hill (450 metres above sea level) and on the shore of a lake named after the town. Numerous attractions from a significant past have been well preserved here, such as the castle, the ring wall, the street scene and the arcades. The majority of the 5’700 inhabitants (73%) are German-speaking, a minority (14%) consider French as their mother tongue.
Historical summary:
515, first mention of the existence of a defensive place called «Muratum». 1013, known as a fortress.
1159-1179 The town was founded by Duke Berchtold IV of Zaehringen as a western fortification. Duke Berchtold died in 1218. Murten was recognized as a “Free Imperial Town», by the German emperor Frederic II. 1255, Murten falls under the protection of Count Peter of Savoy. 1377, Count Amédée of Savoy confirms the privileges given earlier by Duke Berthold of Zaehringen. 1416, the last great fire: the town is destroyed and rebuilt in stone. 1475, the town proclaims its loyalty to Berne and Fribourg. 1476, Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, besieges the town, but is defeated by the Swiss Army (celebration: 22nd June). From 1484 on, and for 300 years, Murten is ruled by the two states, Berne and Fribourg. 1798, the French invade the town. 1803, Napoleon gives the town of Murten to the canton of Fribourg.
Lake Murten (Murtensee, Lac de Morat), embedded between the small mediaeval town of Murten and the Riviera Fribourgeoise with its vineyard slopes gracing Mont Vully, is the smallest of the three lakes on the periphery of the Jura. Thanks to its shallow depth, lake Murten is warmed quickly by the sun and is much loved as a swimming lake from spring through to autumn. Regular boat services sail through the Broye canal from lake Murten to Lac de Neuchâtel, and further on to lake Biel.

Murten, or Morat, is a German- and French-speaking medieval town on the southeast shore of Lake Murten, in western Switzerland. Its defensive walls offer views of the lake and the decorated arcades of the old town. The Murten Museum has archaeological finds and a multimedia display about local history. Nearby, the baroque German Church has a 15th-century wooden pulpit, a stucco ceiling and a Gothic choir.

Well guys, as promised, here's the walkthrough we did of the medieval town featured in the aerial footage video.
This town is called Regensberg. We filmed early morning, with beautiful mists surrounding the walls of the town; and there are fantastic footage of the Swiss Alps in the distance.
If you have any questions, I'm always here to answer.

Scenic Switzerland - Lugano, Interlaken, Gruyeres
Lugano is a town in the south of Switzerland, in the Italian-speaking canton of Ticino, which borders Italy, dubbed by tourists as the Monte Carlo of Switzerland. It occupies the balmy, lake-laced southern foothills of the Alps. In autumn of 2003, I made a brief visit here to see St. Mary of the Angels Church (Santa Maria degli Angeli), a 16th century church famous for the frescoes done by Bernardino Luini, a North Italian painter from Leonardo da Vinci's circle. In 1529 Luini completed one of his masterworks, the grand Passion and Crucifixion fresco, paired by other works in the same church.
In the heart of the Swiss alps, situated between the Lakes of Thun and Brienz and at the foot of the famous trio of peaks, the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau, is Interlaken, a municipality in the canton of Bern. It is one of the oldest tourist resorts in Switzerland, and remains one of the most popular. Its main attraction is probably the magnificent Jungfrau mountain (4158m). Decisive in the development of the Interlaken area was the Augustine Monastery which was founded at the beginning of the 12th century, and was first mentioned by name inter lacus in 1133. The Interlaken Monastery was finally abolished in 1528. The former monastery then became the castle and the seat of government.
The walls and turrets of Gruyères's fairytale castle, 50km northeast of Lausanne, bristle atop a single crag rising above the gorgeous rolling lowlands of Canton Fribourg. The whole region -- of which the medieval town of Gruyères is the best-known attraction -- is known as LA GRUYÈRE. This perfectly preserved old castle-village, isolated on its crag but within easy reach of Lake Geneva, is one of Switzerland's most photogenic sights and attracts hordes of daytrippers throughout the summer season to stroll on the village's only street and explore the impressive château. The château was formerly the regional seat of power, occupied from 1080 to 1554, by the nineteen counts of Gruyères. To approach it, one must walk the length of Gruyères's dipping, picturesque main street with its central fountain and quaint old houses on either side bedecked with hanging signs.
Highlights of the chateau include Flemish tapestries decorating the count's bedchamber, French artist Corot's room with landscapes painted by him, and other rooms throughout the castle with grand fireplaces, heraldic stained glass, and booty from the Battle of Murten where Louis II, Count of Gruyère, fought on the Swiss side. The wood-panelled Knights' Hall is impressive, as is the small formal garden at the very back, on the tip of the hill. Beside the castle, Gruyères's church is in an exceptionally beautiful location, backed by valley vistas.
La Gruyère district is also home to the world famous Le Gruyère cheese, the finest and best-known type of Swiss cheese. It has been made since the 12th Century, when cheese was used as currency in Switzerland.
Our hotel, Hotel Hirschen, is located at Seehof in Fluelen, a municipality in the canton of Uri, the farthest point of the lake from Luzern, a picturesque little place with the train station right beside the landing stage.

Chillon Castle - The medieval fortress on the shores of Lake Geneva ...Chateau de Chillon (Montreux)
Chillon Castle - The medieval fortress on the shores of Lake Geneva ...Chateau de Chillon (Montreux) - Top Tips Before You Go
Chillon Castle is located on a rock on the banks of Lake Geneva. The water castle is the most visited historic building in Switzerland. For nearly four centuries Chillon was the residence and profitable toll station of the Counts of Savoy. The rock island between Lake Geneva and the steep looming mountains was inhabited even in prehistoric times. For hundreds of years the passage of ships on Lake Geneva and the important land route to the St. Bernhard Pass was controlled from this island. Chillon belonged to the Counts of Savoy from the 12th to the 16th century, then the inhabitants of Bern conquered the water castle, and subsequently the inhabitants of Vaud prevailed. It’s possible to rent the castle for various events. From the Castle, you can reach Montreux (by boat, by bus or on foot), where you can admire ten mile of sheltered bays, bordered with flower-lined promenades, exotic plants and palm trees.More than 350,000 guests visit Chillon per year. They view the wall paintings from the 14th century, the subterranean vaults, parade halls and the bedroom (which has been preserved in its original form) dating to the time of Bernese rule. The entire complex consists of 25 buildings and three courtyards, protected by two circular walls.

The Château de Grandson sits enthroned at the northwestern shore of Lake Neuchâtel (French: Lac de Neuchâtel, German: Neuenburgersee) above the historic town of Grandson (447 m above sea level). The castle is one of the largest medieval fortifications in Switzerland, similar to the Château de Chillon, also in the canton of Vaud. The impressive 11th-century building has five round towers and today houses several museums.
Lake Neuchâtel is connected with Lake Murten and Lake Biel-Bienne, and in doing so forms an equalizing reservoir for the river Aar. The water level was higher in the past and reached up to the outer walls of the powerful castle.

Murten (frz.
Murten (French: Morat) is the capital of the Lake District (French: District du Lac). This medieval Zähringer town is located at an altitude of 435 m above sea level near Lake Murten along the language border in the canton of Fribourg. Murten also includes the formerly independent municipalities of Altavilla and Burg.
A circular wall from the 13th -- 17th centuries surrounds the town. Its historic city center is of national importance. The houses in the old town were mainly built during the Baroque period in the 17th and 18th centuries. Next to the church stands the German Reformed vicarage where Jeremias Gotthelf was born. Murten (frz.

Lake Murten offers almost unlimited recreational activities. A popular trip is the three-lakes-boat-trip from Murten via Neuchâtel to Biel. The Mont Vully offers a beautiful Alpine panorama up until the mountains of the Jura. At its slopes grow the vineyards of one of the smallest wine-growing region in Switzerland. The vintners of this region produce refreshing white wines and celebrate their vintage festival in September. An interesting insight into the world of winegrowing offers the 1-hour-hike along the Vully wine trail.
The villages Burg (518 m above sea level) and Altavilla (537 m above sea level) on the high plateau as well as the hamlets of Prehl, Löwenberg on the foot of the Aderahubel and Erli also belong to Murten.

Erlach (frz.

Lucerne Switzerland Travel Guide
A travel guide for visiting Lucerne in Switzerland. 9 of the best things to do in Lucerne including: Lucerne Railway Station, Lucerne Lion Monument, Glacier Garden, Bourbaki Panorama, Chapel Bridge, Lucernes Old Town, City Walls & Clock Tower, Stadkeller Restaurant, Mt. Pilatus Day Trip.
Lucerne has a very impressive main train station. It's been rebuilt, the facade of the old one is still here. But you'll find the train station will be your most convenient way to get in and out of Lucerne. There are tons of shops in it, and also the jumping off point for most buses that take you around the city. And the ferries that'll take you on the Golden Round Trip. And, as you can see by the departure sign, they have a lot of departures out of the station. The basement level of the train station is also home to one of Lucerne's latest open supermarkets. This Coop is open 'til 10pm everyday. It's also a great place to get chocolate, at Laderach. And cheap eats, if all those expensive places in the city have got you wallet broke, check out the Currywurst right here. Next to the train station, in this big, black, modern-looking building, that almost looks like a UFO landed, is Lucerne's Concert Hall and Art Museum. If you're a Star Trek fan, this building might remind you of the Borg cube, kinda looks like to me.
The biggest attraction in Lucerne, one 'cause it's big, and two 'cause this is where everybody comes, is the Lion Monument. This is a monument depicting the Swiss troops who died in 1792, in the French Revolution. It is a pretty sad lion, he's been impaled by a spear, and he's covering a shield over there, that depicts the French Monarchy. While it may not be the best attraction in Lucerne, 'cause it's certainly not the happiest, it is one that you have to come and see because everybody comes to see the sad lion. If you've watched any other of my Switzerland videos, you'll know I talk a lot about the fountains, and this city is no exception. In Lucerne, they have over 200 public fountains with running water from the mountains, tastes just like cold, refreshing Evian water. If you're thirsty, just come up to one of these fountains and you can use it, get some water, or maybe even wash your hands.
Just above the Lion Monument is the Glacier Garden. It's a natural rock formation that happened when glaciers moved over this part of Lucerne, many, many years ago. One of the interesting things that happens when glaciers go, you can see the scrape marks, but behind me there's also these potholes. There's a little one back here but there's a big one back there that's like nine meters deep. It's caused by the force of the water underneath the glacier. There's also a Glacier Museum, and a House of Mirrors. Admission's a little steep, but if you have the Swiss travel pass admission's free. The Hall of Mirrors, I'll say is very cool, because in this room it has the Alhambra Fountain in it. How many of me can you count? And no, this is not a special effect, this is really what this room looks like.
After you visit the Lion Monument, if you want some culture in the form of a big painting, you can visit the Bourbaki Panorama. It's in this nondescript building here, it is a 10 meter high, by 112 meter wrap around panoramic painting that is of the French internment, where the French army was interned in Switzerland back in 1891. It's very interesting, if you have the Swiss pass it's free, if not it's a small admission fee, just note that there's no air conditioning, so if it's hot then it's quite a heat wave inside.

Payerne / Estavayer-le-Lac English
It could hardly be more impressive: the monumental former abbey church, dating from the 11th century, that dominates the medieval centre of Payerne.
This is the largest Romanesque building in Switzerland, a prime example of Cluniac architecture, and the most important sight in a small town that is exceptionally rich in history. Throughout the year, the abbey and its museum stage important exhibitions of paintings, as well as a series of high-quality concerts. Thanks to its position near Lake Neuchâtel and not far from the nature reserve of the Grande Cariçaie, Payerne also makes a good base for a host of excursions into nature. And anyone hungry after a day in the outdoors will enjoy the wonderful sausages made here that have become famous way beyond the ruins of the ancient town walls.
Estavayer-le-Lac
The little medieval town of Estavayer-le-Lac on the south-east bank of Lake Neuchâtel combines one of Europe's most beautiful nature reserves with the joys of a very varied water sports paradise.
Settled in prehistoric times, colonised by the Romans, plundered by barbarians, coveted by barons: thrilling traces of the civilisations which have shaped this region can be found, for example, in the reconstructed Neolithic village of Gletterens and in the nearby Roman museum. In Estavayer you can see many signs of its rich history: the Savoy castle from the 12th century, the Gothic abbey church and the cobbled streets. If you take a walk along the former town walls, you have a good view of the town. It is from Moudon Square that you have the finest panorama over the Jura mountains to the north of the lake. Numerous rural inns and bars serve regional specialities.
Medieval spectacle
Bern's Historical Museum is hosting a special exhibition on Charles the Bold and Burgundian life during his time. For ten days the museum's grounds are being transformed into a medieval encampment, where doctors have there own ways of curing people and knights risk their lives in jousting tournaments.
