Tallinn, Estonia is a place I'd wanted to visit for a while. I kept being told from other travellers that Tallinn is not only a beautiful city, but one that has friendly people, and a great vibe. After a fairly quick visit to the city, I would definitely agree. The vibe in Tallinn is great. It's a bit of a party town, and the weather in the winter can be a bit crazy, but I absolutely loved it. Moreover, Tallinn is a great city for photography. It has some iconic views, and lots of photogenic little streets and alleyways. It's a city I'd love to get back to and shoot a little more photography in.

We took these photos while we were visiting Tallinn Estonia in September of 2004. Estonia was conquered by the German's, Swede's, Danish, and Russians, but it is finally independent. There were some people with medieval Estonian Musical instruments playing for us. Estonia is a very interesting place to visit and the Estonian people are a good testimonial to the human spirit.

Every year during the second weekend of July Tallinn turns into a blossoming Hansa City Reval, just as it looked like in the Middle Ages. Estonian Folk Art and Craft Unions organise the Medieval Festival, which is concentrated in the Town Hall Square. During the festival, you'll be able to feel the atmosphere of that historical period.
You can also enjoy playing some medieval sports games or take part in the knights' tournament. Lots of handicraft workshops, such as felting, woodcarving as well as concerts and performances await you. A real medieval market is set up in the Town Hall Square. On the streets you can easily meet troubadours, jesters, jugglers, minstrels and other medieval entertainers. A children's area of workshops and games, organised for girls and boys of all ages, can be found on Niguliste hill. These days can be real fun for the whole family.

Once we travelled on a sea ferry by Baltic Sea and visited 4 famous Northern capitals. Our journey was started from the Norther Russian Capital - Saint Petersburg.
Third stop of our ferry was in the fabulous city – Tallinn, which is an Estonia capital.
Tallinn is the capital and largest city of Estonia. It is on the northern coast of the country, on the shore of the Gulf of Finland in Harju County. From the 13th century until, the city was known as Reval.
Our Tallinn walk has begun in the seaport, where you can go up in a balloon to a height of 120 meters. From the balloon opens a beautiful panorama of the capital of Estonia, of the seaport and of the old town and residential areas.
When we descended from the Tallinn balloon, we went for a walk through the old town. In the old town we visited another high-rise observation deck which is located in the Church of St. Olaf. In the 16th century, the height of the main tower reached a height of 159 meters, which allowed the Church of Saint Olaf in Tallinn to be considered the tallest building in the world. It is said that in a good weather you can see Helsinki from the tower.
After visiting the tower, we had a long walk through old Tallinn, during which we had seen its most important sights and had a great time at all.
After the walk, we arrived to the port of Tallinn, where our ferry was waiting for us, on which we were going to go to Russia, to the Saint Petersburg city.
It was a beautiful day in Tallinn, in wonderful Northern capital of Estonia.
The visit of Tallinn was very interesting and cognitive.

Tallinn Old Town.
Your trip to Tallinn is not complete until you walk around cobblestone streets of Tallinn Old Town and enjoy the beautiful buildings which were mostly built in the 14th-15th centuries. Also, some of the best restaurants and cafes are located in Tallinn Old Town, so make sure to find a minute to relax and try traditional Estonian dishes.
Tallinn TV Tower.
There is no better place in Tallinn to see the panoramic view of the city from high above than Tallinn TV Tower. Everything from old buildings to glistening Baltic Sea to green parks will be in your sights, so make sure to take a camera.
Estonian Open Air Museum.
After learning more about Estonian history and culture make sure to visit Estonian Open Air Museum and experience it all yourself. There is no better place in Estonia to see the everyday lives of the villagers in the 18th-20th century. You can even visit an old village tavern and try out the traditional Estonian dishes prepared by local cooks.
St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral.
St. Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the most spectacular Orthodox church in Tallinn. You will be amazed by all the luxury and opulence inside this grand onion-domed structure.
Tallinn Town Wall.
Tallinn Town Wall is one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in Europe, which will take you back to the Middle Ages. 20 towers and 1.9 kilometers long, the original wall is still standing, surrounding Tallinn Old Town and creating a wonderful fairytale atmosphere.
Kiek in de Kök.
Kiek in de Kök is a huge 38-meter-high cannon tower, which is now a museum. If you are interested in walls, cannons, and medieval exhibits, you must drop by this place, which is also a starting point of a hidden tunnels system which runs through Toompea Hill.
Kohtuotsa Viewpoint.
Kohtuotsa is one of the best viewpoints in Tallinn. It is a perfect place to visit anytime you want. In the early morning, when the weather is good, you can take photos of an amazing sunrise there. During the day you can admire the beautiful landscape of Tallinn. In the late afternoon, Kohtuotsa is a perfect spot to watch the sunset. And of course, we can’t imagine a better place to take photos of Tallinn at night.
Oleviste Church.
Oleviste Church was built in 1250 and was the tallest building in Europe during the Middle Ages. You must visit if you want to see a true architectural masterpiece. Also, you can go inside the church as it is still actively used for masses and other ceremonies.
Tallinn, Estonia's Well Preserved Medieval Town
We joined an Explore U.K. tour group for a fast-paced two week tour of the Baltic States - Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. It would be difficult to find a more picture-perfect medieval and cobble-stoned town then Tallinn.
Join me as we walked up and down the narrow and scenic streets for two straight days, admiring, learning and eating (what else!)... The group wouldn't arrive until tomorrow and today was on our own.

Tallinn, the capital of Estonia and its cultural hub has managed to wholly preserve its structure of medieval and Hanseatic origin through its exceptionally intact 13th century city plan, the Old Town. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, joining the ranks of the world’s most recognised landmarks. Here you'll find original cobblestone streets dotted with medieval churches and grandiose merchant houses, barns and warehouses many of which date back to the Middle Ages. The Old Town is home to cafes, shops, restaurants, as well as Kiek in de Kök, a 15th-century defensive tower. The medieval Viru Gate at Viru Street, are the welcoming towers to the Old Town in Tallinn. Olde Hansa Medieval Restaurant in the Old Town will take you back in time with an amazing experience of 15th century Hanseatic theme the moment you step in to the restaurant. The three-floored restaurant can seat up to 300 guests and will entertain them with medieval music, candle lit environment, medieval paintings on the walls, wooden seating, medieval cooking method. The serving staffs are all dressed in 15th century costumes and even they pretend to treat you as if they don’t know anything about the current generation and its technology developments. The waiting staff also mentioned that they do not use any of the todays ingredients such as potatoes, tomatoes, pumpkin etc. and they use the old slow cooking method. Apart from shops and restaurants, one can also visit the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which is know for its Russian Revival style architecture. The town has retained all its customs and culture with very high pride. The entire Old Town can be explored by feet and the more you walk down the streets, the more you experience. Do visit once for an amazing Gothic spires, winding cobblestone streets and enchanting architecture.
