FRANCE | Castles of Loire Atlantique (4K documentary)
The period of the Middle Ages is a huge part of the History of France. Today, the ruins of many Castles still remain in the whole country. In this short documentary, we explore 4 Castles in Loire Atlantique in the Northwest of France.
Clisson Castle:
Transcription: The construction of this Medieval castle was initiated by the Clisson family. During the Middle Ages, the castle served as a residence but also as a fortress, as you can see by the stone structure, the walls, the towers, the arrow slits, the gatehouse, and the battlements from which soldiers could both hide and fight at long distance. This defensive architecture played a significant role to protect the southern borders of the Duchy of Brittany during the wars of Vendée in the 15th century.
Bretesche Castle:
Transcription: We are now inside the Duchy of Brittany. Built in the 15th century, the Bretesche Castle was a residence with defensive features as well, such as a moat. It served well during the wars of religion, until the French revolution.
Guérande:
Transcription: More than a castle, Guérande was an entire fortified medieval town. 1300m of walls, 4 entrances, and 6 towers, protected the 4000 inhabitants during the 15th century. Today, the city is also known for its salt marshes.
Pé Castle:
Transcription: Surrounded by woods, the Pé Castle was after all a residence for aristocrats during the 18th and 19th centuries. A few pieces of the former feudal castle still remain though.
There are a lot of other Castles in the region that did not appear in this video, such as the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany in the center of Nantes. Do not hesitate to search on Google if you'd like to know more about them.

Saint-Nazaire is a commune in the Loire-Atlantique department in western France, in traditional Brittany.
The town has a major harbour on the right bank of the Loire River estuary, near the Atlantic Ocean. The town is at the south of the second-largest swamp in France, called la Brière. Given its location, Saint-Nazaire has a long tradition of fishing and shipbuilding. The Chantiers de l'Atlantique, one of the largest shipyards in the world, has constructed notable superliners such as SS Normandie, SS France, RMS Queen Mary 2 and MS Symphony of the Seas, the largest passenger ship in the world as of 2018.
Saint-Nazaire was a small village until the industrial area but became a large town in the second half of the 19th century, thanks to the construction of railways and the growth of the seaport. Saint-Nazaire progressively replaced Nantes as the main haven on the Loire estuary. The town was one of the most damaged in France during World War II. As a major submarine base for the Germans, Saint-Nazaire was subject to a British raid in 1942 and it was heavily bombed by the Allies until 1945. Being one of the Atlantic pockets, Saint-Nazaire was one of the last territories in Europe to be liberated from the Germans, on 11 May 1945.

Palacio de Monjaraz Avila - Spain 4K Travel Channel
The Hotel Palacio de Monjaraz is in a manor house from the 16th century. We have chosen the hotel because of its central location within the city walls of Avila.
From the outside, the building looks like most houses in Avila. But inside, you feel like transported back into a knight's castle.
Due to the relatively steep rising alley in front of the house, the premises accessible to the public are spread over two floors. The hotel entrance on the lower floor leads into the lobby and the breakfast room.
On the upper floor are a restaurant and a bar. It also has a separate entrance from the street. The rooms are on the further floors.
Armor, sculptures, and the natural raw walls strengthen the medieval atmosphere. Even so, everything has a classy appearance. This impression continues in the rooms.
The technical equipment corresponds to the newest state, including fast free WLAN. The rooms are clean and the staff kind and helpful. A great plus is a reasonable price.
The Hotel Palacio de Monjaraz is the ideal starting point to explore the old town of Avila. From here, all sights are within short walking distance.

(EN) Pérouges is a commune in the Ain department in eastern France. It is a medieval walled town 30 km (19 mi) northeast of Lyon. It is perched on a small hill that overlooks the plain of the Ain River.
Perched on his hill, Perouges is a perfect example of a Middle Ages town. A village of craftsmen, it never knew the sway of a lord ; its inhabitants, whose occupations were farming and linen weaving, already enjoyed their communal freedom as early as 1236.
The village has no rich relics but can boast of an unequalled unity with its houses of the nobility and its more modest craftsmen's houses on the unevenly paved streets offering such a picturesque display. Conserved since 1911 by the Beaux Arts Commission and its own Defense Committee, it has attracted film producers who have used exterior shots in numerous French films including The Three Musketeers.Perouges appears to have been founded by a Gallic colony returning from Perogia in Italy. The sites of the two towns are strangely alike, and their ways of spelling are identical. The Romans built a beacon tower here, governing the road from the Rhone valley and defending Lugdunum (Lyon) by its signals.
In 1167 the Seigneur d'Anthon shut himself within the walls to resist the Archbishop of Lyon's troops.
In 1236 were granted the first communal franchises and a sudden prosperity in the textile industry blossomed up to the end of the 18th century.
In 1300 Perouges became part of the Dauphiné county.
In 1343 a new charter was granted by the Lord of Vienne.
In 1345 Perouges became part of the Savoy Duchy, the town flourished and the people were favoured by the souverain.
In 1468 the Duke of Savoy, in alliance with Charles le Temeraire fought off Louis 11th's troups come to devastate Bresse in a memorable siege.
In 1585, birth of the Baron of Perouges, famous grammarian in the château of the Rouge belonging to Claude Favre de Vaugelas.
In 1601 the town became French with Henri 4th's Lyon treaty. From this period dates the demantling of the fortress.
With the 19th century came industrial developments, the railway and re-routing of local roads, all which were to threaten the survival of Perouges. Population dropped from 1500 to 8.
In 1909 Perouges was threatened with demolition, Anthelme THIBAUT launched a press campaign to save the town from its fate.
In 1911 under the aegis of President Edouart Herriot, the Vieux Perouges committee was founded : archaeologists, artists and notables took part in the resurrection. Houses were saved and progressively restored.

Places to see in ( Aigues Mortes - France )
Aigues-Mortes is found in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, eight kilometres from the coast, and is fascinating because of the medieval defensive walls that still surround the entire historic town. The town is in quite a remote location on the southern edge of the Camargue region of France, and is the only significant town to fall in the Camargue region.
On arriving at Aigues-Mortes you can park outside the medieval walls then walk along part of the outside before entering to explore the town. Outside the walls there is little to hold your attention - mostly the 'newer' town of Aigues-Mortes and salt plains - and your visit will focus on the old town within the walls.
The 1600 metres of fortified walls were constructed later in the 13th century by Phillippe III and Phillippe IV and completely surround the town, interrupted at regular intervals by towers that had various functions - salt storage, munitions, etc. Entering into the town centre, all streets lead to the pretty Place Saint Louis which is the centre of old Aigues-Mortes. Here you can see the Town Hall, a church, a statue of the venerable Saint Louis and a good selection of cafes and restaurants.
The Church of Notre-Dame-des-Sablons was built in the gothic style in the 13th century, so predates the fortifications. The surrounding streets that radiate off the square will entice you to explore further, where you will find many beautifully preserved medieval houses. The further you get from the centre, the less touristic (and less attractive) the town becomes.
As you explore you will also discover two small chapels in Aigues-Mortes. Quite unassuming from the outside you should enter the chapels when you see them:
- the Chapel of the Grey Penitents on Place Paul Bert, built at the beginning of the 17th century. Go inside to see the 18th century marble altarpiece which is much grander than you would expect when you see the chapel from the outside!
- the Chapel of the White Penitents at the end of Rue de la République, built in the late 17th century and with a large 18th century painting of the Pentecost behind the altar
If you would like to learn more about the salt flats and the industry they support, you can take an excursion from Aigues-Mortes (bus or tourist train) to learn more about the techniques involved. Another popular excursion is to to see the sharks and tropical fish at the Sea aquarium at nearby Le Grau-de-Roi. Our favourite beach near here is at La Grande-Motte to the west, and to the east you can explore the marshes and wildlife of the Camargue region and visit the traditional fishing town at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

Places to see in ( Aigues Mortes - France ) Salin d'Aigues Mortes
The Salins d'Aigues-Mortes is one of the 6 establishments of the company Salins du Midi, and the historic headquarters of this company. Located in the town of Aigues-Mortes , in the Camargue , in the Gard department , the salt marshes cover a large part of the Peccais marshes , to the south-east of the fortified village. They are accessible by the departmental road 46, southeast of Aigues-Mortes.
The exploitation of salt in Aigues-Mortes is an economic activity that goes back to ancient times . The first saline activity is attributed to a Roman engineer, Peccius , who left his name to the marsh of Peccais . During the Middle Ages , while the village of Aigues-Mortes is strongly influenced by the nearby Psalmodie Abbey , the economy is mainly focused on fishing and salt. During the reign of Louis IX , while the abbey passes under its domination, part of the marshes are sanitized, to facilitate the activity and trade of the region. Local development is continued under the reign ofPhilip III, said the Bold and Philip IV the Fair said , and sees the creation of the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes.
It is in 1856 that the Salins of Aigues-Mortes are constituted by company, by the regrouping of the owners, to become the company Renouard et Cie . In 1868 , the company changed its name. Compagnie des Salins du Midi then set up its headquarters in Montpellier. Salinas have been included in the general inventory of cultural heritage since 22 December 1995 , both for the production site and for administrative and housing buildings.
Aigues-Mortes saline production is a classic sea salt production, located along the Mediterranean coast, on a totally flat soil. The maximum activity is in summer, in order to benefit from optimal sunshine, for evaporation of water and crystallization of salt under the combined action of sun and wind. The operation of the salt is done, in stages, in five types of consecutive basins, interconnected by a circulation of water. The first basins, the parts , collect pumped seawater (salinity rate of about 38 g per liter) . The basins are, indeed, located a few meters above sea level, and the absence of important tides in the Mediterranean forces the use of pumps. The water then flows from basins to basins, its salinity increasing as and when. This circuit, with a length of several kilometers, causing the brine water to the basins reserve.
The salt tables (or crystallizers) , last basins, allowing the harvest of salt, are less deep than the previous ones. The salinity level then reaches 260 g of salt per liter of water. This is the most striking part of the production: on the one hand, by the color of the basins, due to the presence of microscopic algae in the water, Dunaliella salina ; on the other hand the mode of salt extraction. Once the water is drained, a layer of 8 to 15 centimeters of salt, the salt cake covers the bottom of the basins. Formerly harvested manually, by the salt workers (or salt workers )salt is collected mechanically by crawler tractors with shovels in the front. The salt thus harvested is stored in the form of mounds of 10 to 15 meters , the camels.

Meghan, Christine Hirsch-D'haen and Gerhard Hirsch in Saint Malo - France 4K Travel Channel
The trio Meghan performs Celtic and medieval music. We had the chance to meet two of the members, Christine Hart D'haen and Gerhard Hirsch, in Saint Malo. Gerard Hirsch has a passion for old stringed instruments. He plays both Tympanum, a kind of dulcimer from the 11th century, the Nyckelharpa, a fiddle from the 14th century, as well as Celtic harp and Rebec, a precursor of today's violin. In order to play the music authentic, Gerhard Hirsch sometimes build musical instruments himself.
Already in earliest childhood, Christine was introduced the old music by her father, a musician. She plays transverse flute and Chalumeau, a woodwind instrument related to our today's clarinet.
You find the trio Meghan on church concerts, medieval feasts, festivals, receptions, weddings etc.
