Kings Canyon, West MacDonnell Ranges & the Mereenie Loop: S04 Northern Territory E07 Road Trip Lap
We finished up at Uluru and wanted to see the West MacDonnell Ranges. The outer Mereenie Loop road is a bit rough, not often traveled, but provides the opportunity to see the real outback, often on your own! We visited Kings Canyon doing the RIm Walk, swam at Ormiston Gorge and Ellery Creek Big Hole in the West MacDonnell Ranges, spotted camels, brumbies and more. We discuss tyre pressures and handling off road towing in a caravan.

Mount Conner, Northern Territory, Australia
Mount Conner, Northern Territory, Australia 2011
Mount Conner, also known as Attila and Artilla, and occasionally found as Mount Connor, is an Australian mountain located in the southwest corner of the Northern Territory, 75 kilometres (47 mi) southeast of Lake Amadeus at the border of the vast Curtin Springs cattle station in Pitjantjatjara country. It reaches to 859 metres (2,818 ft) above sea level and to 300 metres (984 ft) above ground level.
Mount Conner is a flat-topped and horseshoe-shaped inselberg/mesa, part of the same vast rocky substrate thought to be beneath Uluru/Ayers Rock and Kata Tjuta/Olgas. It can easily be confused with Uluru, since it can be seen from the road to Uluru and Kata Tjuta, when approaching from Alice Springs. It was named Mount Conner by William Gosse in 1873 after South Australian politician M. L. Conner.
Attila (Mount Conner) is close to the site of Kungkarangkalpa, the Seven Sisters Dreaming.

Glen Helen to Kings Canyon | Mereenie Loop Road
Today is day 2 in the Red Center! We wake up in Glen Helen and take a
short walk to the Glen Helen Gorge which is just behind our campsite.
We get on the road and back track a little to Ormiston Gorge. This is
a great hike that follows the ridge and loops around
through the gorge to a great watering hole.
We then go to Redbank Gorge which is an out and back hike along the
creek bed that ends at another really beautiful waterhole.
We stop and have lunch at Tyler's Pass Lookout and then make one last
stop at Gosse Bluff which is a crater from a meteorite that you can actually drive right into!
We continue our drive to Kings Canyon via the Mereenie Loop Road. This
is an unsealed road that requires a 4x4 car and also a permit. It is
supposed to take roughly 3 hours but with a little aggressive
driving, we make it in about 1.5 hours.
We arrive in King's Canyon after a great day and get settled into our
campsite for the night.

Mereenie Loop road from Glen Helen to Kings Canyon on a 2WD SUV (4K)
This video is about my recent trip from Glen Helen to Kings Canyon via the unsealed road of Mereenie Loop aka Red Centre Way. It was during the dry season in winter, hence a front wheel drive SUV is ok for the road. But you definitely need an all wheel drive car in wet season as some part of the sandy road will be flooded. Always check the local information centre about the weather before you take off.

Driving along the Ernest Giles Road in Northern Territory. Great road to take if you want to experience very remote areas.
Mereenie Loop Road
Authorities are trying to rename the Mereenie Loop Rd to the Red Centre Way, but no-one seems to be listening. The Loop Rd has a reputation of being an horrendous vehicle killer, and whilst its a little rough we found it no challenge for either the driver or any well maintained vehicle. We suspect its reputation may stem from the significant number of inexperienced tourists in rental vehicles. Plans are afoot to seal the entire loop, so get in quick to experience this piece of the Australian Outback as we think it should be experienced. If you haven't experienced typical remote or Outback roads it will be confronting but its not a car killer. Experienced remote and Outback travelers will just enjoy the journey and the unequal and beautiful scenery

Alice Springs - Uluru
We took the long route to Uluru (700km) which took us past 2 gorgeous gorges. On the way, we saw some wild brumbys and camels which was amazing.
Now it's back to Alice (500km) to refuel/pack, and then a north-bound send to Kakadu.
