Strawberries Over A Chardonnay Risotto in Italy's Piedmont Region
Of the many places to visit in Italy, an agriturismo in the Piedmont wine region should rank at the top one's travel list. Tricia and I had the phenomenal opportunity to stay at the Agriturismo Tenuta La Romana. Situated amidst the UNESCO-protected Monferrato hills, this agriturismo also features a restaurant onsite, La Riserva del Gusto, that showcases the region's freshest, local ingredients.
In this episode, we dine al fresco and enjoy a multi-course culinary extravaganza, complete with a bubbly red Barbera wine, strawberry risotto, grilled beef, and a delicious fruit dessert. We look forward to getting back to Pastoral Piedmont!

Monferrato Moves #4: Nizza Project
Is there anything more adorable than a weimaraner eating grapes in a northern Italian vineyard? Besides a puppy eating grapes in a northern Italian vineyard, I mean?
Well, you can decide for yourself after watching today’s video!
The dog, and the vineyard, and the grapes that are being eaten, all belong to Gianni Bertolino, of the well-regarded Monferrato producer and President of Associazione dei Produttori del Nizza. Bertolino is one of the most vocal proponents of a special brand of Monferrato, Nizza Docg, designed to sit at the top of the quality pyramid of the region’s Barbera wines, and indisputably one the most complex, structured, and potentially long-lived incarnations of that grape that money can buy. In our video, Bertolino welcomes us and gives us the insider’s view on Nizza wines.
Here’s a little bit of background: Nizza is an official subzone of the Barbera d’Asti wine region, with its own set of specific farming, production, and aging regulations, all of which are more stringent and quality-focused than the already stringent and quality-focused regulations that oversee the other Barbera-producing areas of the region. Nizza was officially recognized as a subzone in the 2014 vintage, but the concept stems back at least twenty-some-odd years before that, and its history goes back even longer.
The Nizza objective, as explained by Bertolino, has always been to provide a premium version of Barbera, anchored in the French concept of offering a cru vineyard wine, one that showcases the terroir (the unique combination of soil, climate, and winemaking history) of a small, specific area (and in some case, a small, specific vineyard).
Despite his dog’s best efforts to cull vineyard production, Bertolino produces an impressive and age-worthy Nizza Barbera, and he is perhaps the perfect person to walk us through what what it really means when a Piedmontese Barbera wine carries the Nizza designation on its label.

Piemonte wine is the range of Italian wines made in the region of Piedmont in the northwestern corner of Italy.
The best-known wines from the region include Barolo and Barbaresco. They are made from the Nebbiolo grape. These wines are ideal for storage and a well-aged Barolo for instance may leave a feeling of drinking velvet because the tannins are polished and integrated more and more into the wine. As the wine matures the colour becomes more brownish and rust-red.
Other popular grapes used for red wine production are Barbera and Dolcetto. Wine made with the Barbera grape is often fruity, with high acidity. It can be delicate with less tannin than wine made from the Nebbiolo grape. Dolcetto on the other side, is not, as the name indicates, sweet. Dolcetto means little sweet one. (dolce is Italian for sweet). The grape gives fresh and dry red wines with some tannin. The wines made with the Dolcetto grape are typically consumed relatively young.
The sparkling wine Asti spumante is made from the Moscato grape. The majority of the area's winemaking take places in the provinces of Cuneo, Asti and Alessandria. The Brachetto is another variety used for making sweet and sparkling red wines.
While Turin is the capital of the Piedmont, Alba and Asti are at the heart of the region's wine industry. The wine making industry of the Piedmont played a significant role in the early stages of the Risorgimento with some of the era's most prominent figures-like Camillo Benso, conte di Cavour and Giuseppe Garibaldi owning vineyards in Piedmont region and making significant contributions to the development of Piedmontese wines. The excessively high tariffs imposed by the Austrian Empire on the export of Piedmontese wines to Austrian controlled areas of northern Italy was one of the underlying sparks to the revolutions of 1848–1849.
