Meeting of the Waters, Manaus, Brazil's #1
This is where the black waters of the Rio Negro meet the brown waters of the Solimoes River. Yet the two don't mix for several miles because of differences in density, velocity and temperatures! When they do mix, they become the mighty Amazonas River!
Meeting of the Waters, Manaus, Brazil #2
The Meeting of Waters is the confluence between the Rio Negro, a river with dark (almost black coloured) water, and the sandy-coloured Amazon River or Rio Solimões, as it is known the upper section of the Amazon in Brazil. For 3.7 mi, the river's waters run side by side without mixing.
This phenomenon is due to the differences in temperature, speed and water density of the two rivers.

Amazon and Rio Negro Rivers Meeting of the Waters in Brazil
One highlight of a visit to the Manaus area is the Meeting of the Waters. The Rio Solimoes (Amazon River) and Rio Negro meet around 10 kilometers/6.2 miles from Manaus. Here the dark Rio Negro flows along the sandy upper Amazon. They don't mix but
flow alongside each other for nearly four miles. Many excursions from Manaus take sightseers to the meeting.
This can even be seen from space! Amazing...

The Meeting of the Waters is the point at which the Rio Negro meets the Rio Solimões
Meeting of the Waters form the Amazon River proper in the Brazilian state of Amazonas
Due to differences in temperature, speed and density, the two rivers' differently colored waters don't mix immediately, but flow side by side for several miles
Almost 10 kilometres from the inland city of Manaus in northern Brazil, ‘the Meeting of the Waters’ is the point where two of Amazon River’s largest tributaries - converge but never mix.
The Solimões River forms the lighter half, its ‘cafe au lait’ colouring owed to the rich sediment that runs down from the Andes Mountains, including sand, mud and silt
Solimões River is also known as a ‘white water river’, the Solimões River stretches over a 1600 km distance
The darker side is the Rio Negro, and it gets its ‘black tea’ hue from leaf and plant matter that has decayed and dissolved in the water
Rio Negro river might look dark and murky, but the carries little or no sediment, and is considered one of the cleanest natural waters in the world
The Solimões River and Rio Negro flow side-by-side over distance of six kilometres
The reason they never mix is because of the stark differences in temperature, speed and water density between the two.
The Solimões is faster, cooler and denser
Solimõeswaters flowing up to 6 km/h at 22 degrees Celsius
Rio Negro is slower and warmer
Rio Negro flow at a more leisurely 2 km/h, and maintain a temperature of around 28 degrees Celsius.
After several kilometres, the two rivers eventually converge thanks to a blast of fast-moving whitewater, and become part of the Lower Amazon River.

City in Brazil
Manaus, on the banks of the Negro River in northwestern Brazil, is the capital of the vast state of Amazonas. It's a major departure point for the surrounding Amazon Rainforest.
Just east of the city, the dark Negro River converges with the brown, muddy Solimões River resulting in a striking visual phenomenon called the “Meeting of the Waters.” The combined tributaries form the Amazon River.

Confluence between the dark Rio Negro and the muddy and yellow Upper Amazon River or Rio Solimões. From 6 to 12 km (depending the season) the two rivers waters run side by side without mixing.
This phenomenon occurs in other regions of the world.
This phenomenon is due to the differences in temperature, speed and water density of the two rivers. The Rio Negro flows at near 2 km/h (1.2 mph) at a temperature of 28 °C (82 °F), while the Rio Solimões flows between 4 and 6 km/h (2.5–3.7 mph) at a temperature of 22 °C (72 °F).
