Mefou National Park in Yaounde, Cameroon
Mefou National Park, also known as Mefou Wildlife Sanctuary and Mfou Reserve, is a national park and zoo in the forested area of Mfou in Cameroon. Within it, Mefou Primate Park is used as a shelter for primates that are native to Africa: the monkey, chimpanzee and gorilla.
Ape Action Africa established the sanctuary to house primates which were housed at the Mvog-Betsi Zoo at Yaoundé. Eventually, it would act to protect primates that were affected by illegal pet and bushmeat trades in the country.
A 45-minute drive south of Yaoundé, Mefou is run by Ape Action Africa, an organisation established to protect primates in Cameroon. Well-informed guides will show you gorillas, drills, chimps and mandrills living in beautiful natural surrounds, all rescued from the bushmeat trade. A taxi to the park from Yaoundé costs around CFA50,000; call ahead if it's rainy to check if the park's open.
In 2010, the shelter's manager, Colonel Avi Sivan, was killed in a helicopter crash.

Cameroon Wildlife Sanctuary and Wildlife Refuge: Mefou and Ape Action Africa
After spending nearly a week visa hunting in Yaounde, Cameroon, I left the capital of Cameroon and headed towards Gabon. Now, leaving I had no idea if I could even get into Gabon by securing a visa at the border, but I figured it was worth a try. First, I stopped at a place called Ape Action Africa in Mefou, Cameroon just an hour scooter drive out Yaounde. I spent then night there and explored the wildlife sanctuary which is home to gorillas, chimpanzees, and monkeys.
After checking out the site, I cruised towards Gabon and was thrilled to be let into the country quite easily. All in all, these were a couple really good days of travel, and after the troubles of the past couple weeks, it was probably a good thing that was the case.

We visited the Primate Sanctuary in Mefou, Cameroon. This silverback surprised us when he came running out of the trees beating his chest. What a fabulous surprise. This is the actual sound they make as they cup their hands and beat their chest.
