Meikle Bin | WW2 Plane Crash | Hillwalking Scotland
#hillwalking #scotland
The Meikle Bin is the highest point, within the Kilsyth Hills and Campsie Fell range, at 570m (1,870 ft) with views across Glasgow to the south, Stirling to the north east and the start of the Highlands to the north west. It is an easy route to follow with well marked paths to the summit and can be completed to the top and back in around three and a half hours, with good weather.
There are two widely used car-parks to access the Carron Valley area, the main car-park to the east of the reservoir and the Todholes car-park to the west. Either car-park is situated directly next to well maintained gravel tracks that wind around the southern area of the reservoir and lead right up to the final ascent of the Meikle Bin.
The climb to the summit is easy going until the final 200m where the track ends and the well trodden grass path leads to the trig-point. This portion is a little steeper, so much so that it is worth noting.
Around 50m from the summit, on the western route, lies the remaining portion of wing wreckage from the ill-fated Fairey Firefly aircraft. In January 1950 the air-craft was making its final descent into what is now Glasgow international airport when low fog affected them and they struck the upper part of the eastern edge, scattering the wreckage across the western slope. Sadly the two crew perished on the hillside and were not found until a few days later after a public search.
The remaining wing portion is easily found however there is the engine block further down the western edge within the fir trees which I have yet to find.
The Carron Valley reservoir and the Meikle Bin are great places to visit for those who enjoy the outdoors as there are plenty of well marked tracks and it is easily achievable to reach the summit with great views on clear days.
Why not check it out for yourself?

Hill Walks in Pictures....Meikle Bin
Picture slide show of the route up Meikle Bin, one of the better hills of the Campsie Fells. The path quality varies from excellent forest tracks to diabolical muddy forest firebreaks.....great fun !!
Carron Valley
Get a taste of the Highlands in this rolling forest on the shores of the Carron Valley reservoir. Enjoy an easy waterside stroll or family cycle ride, a blast through the forest by mountain bike or tackle the distinctive peak of the Meikle Bin for panoramic views over central Scotland.
These woods are alive with wildlife and history – discover standing stones, old drove roads and a reconstructed Iron Age fort, spot red squirrels and crossbills in the trees and watch for ospreys and waterbirds from the lochside hide.
There are toilets in the main car park, including accessible facilities, which are open year-round. Find places to eat, drink and shop at the nearby towns of Fintry, Denny and Kilsyth.
Parking and picnicking
The car park at Carron Valley is open from 7.30am to 9.00pm in the summer and 7.30am to 6.00pm in the winter. Stroll across the little bridge beside the car park to reach a pretty picnic spot on a grassy island in the Carron River. There is also a small car park at the other end of the reservoir called Todholes.
How to get here
Carron Valley Forest lies beside the B818, west of Denny in Stirlingshire.
Take the B818 west from Denny, signposted to Fintry. The car park is on the left after about 6 miles (10km), at grid reference NS 721 848. The car park is open from 7.30am to 9.00pm in summer and 7.30am to 6.00pm in the winter.
There is also a small parking area at Todholes at the other end of the reservoir.

A Fine Loch Fyne
Winter boating can be as good fun as summer boating assuming you dress for the weather. This video is of a mixed weather day on Loch Fyne in mid November. Snow was on the hill tops and the grass white with frost. Its interesting to see how a Honwave 3.8 IE airfloor performs with a 6HP outboard.
