{Trip} Maolin Trip_Day 3_Liugui/茂林之旅_第三天_六龜
Third day of our trip to the Maolin National Scenic Area. We stayed the second night at the Pu-Lao Hot Spring Hotel ( in Bulao. From there we headed north to the village of Baolai where we went on a walk following the Pulaixitou Tribe Historic Battle Trail. Plum trees were blooming and the scenery was great. Then we headed back south following the Laonong River. We saw the 18 Arhats Mountains across the river and then stopped at a date (jujube) farm in Dajin. Finally, we had lunch at the Meinong Folk Village before heading back home to Taipei.

I left Sanyi after visiting the Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum. I left at around 2pm and stopped at the Shengxing Station, not in use anymore since 1998. I was walking to Taichung, my original destination but it was still far and obviously I didn't have enough time that day. The Longteng broke bridge is another tourist attraction along the way. Once there I saw few nice spots where place my tent for the night. So I waited until the last tourist left the site and just before the dark I built my tent right behind the bridge. Once done with that I wrote a post on my Facebook page. I was a bit scared honestly. My tent was just next to the wood and I was worry about wild animals. After a while a old friend of mine, a Taiwanese girl met in Italy nine years before, saw the post and contacted me. Funny thing is that her family has a restaurant and camping 300 meters from where I was! She came out shouting my name. That was a big surprise. Was too late to move my tent in her camping but in the day after I did it.

Guandu Temple
Dating back to 1661, Guandu temple—the oldest Matzu temple in Taipei is built right into the side of a mountain. For many visitors, Guandu is a perfect example of the mixed role that most Taiwanese temple play: house of worship, art house, carnival venue and street food market. The walls, pillars, and the stone lions were carved according to many historical stories. The legends of Mazu the residents spread add more mystique to the Guandu Temple. S: Are they worshipping Mazu? M: Yes, one of the legends about Mazu happened in 1895. One day, three old banyan trees standing at the temple's entrance died suddenly; local people believed that this might have been a message from Matzu warning of impending disaster and sure enough, the area was soon occupied by the foreign intruders. S: Wow, that’s cool! Mazu is so efficacious!! M: yeah, that’s why we believe in Mazu for such a long time. S:咦? what’s that on the rooftop? M:Oh, that’s jiannian! S: What is jiannian? M: jiannian is a kind of decorative arts, which is popular in Minnan and Hakka’s traditional arts and crafts. S: Hmm…There seems to be an abundant culture here in Guandu Temple. M: Yes, come here in Chinese New Year, and you’ll find more about Taiwanese’s traditional culture.
Guandu Nature Park
After visiting the Guandu Temple, there is another attraction waiting for you. Here is the Guandu Nature Park. This park is a major stopover site for migrating birds, especially waterfowl and shorebirds. Besides, it is an important wintering and breeding ground for many species. 229 species of birds have been observed qualifying this wetland as an Important Bird Area (IBA) This is the visitor center. There is an indoor observational area on the second floor. You may observe the birds by the spotting scopes here and enjoy the panoramic view of the Guandu plains cape. In Guandu Nature Park, two buffaloes are selected as conservation partners. The older sister's name is Nougat (牛軋糖) and the younger sister's name is Caramel (牛奶糖). They are so cute and attract many visitors to treasure the value of wetland in Guandu. Once a year in Autumn, Taipei International Birdwatching Fair is held here to share with people. If you visit Guandu in October, you may have chance to join this activity.
What are you waiting for? Pack your luggage and book some appointment, you’ll realize the pleasure of traveling in Guandu. Welcome to Taiwan!!

This video was originally compiled in year 2007 in Chinese language. Mr. Chuck Schumann, a friend of VGM, kindly translated it into English. Part I of the series of three parts introduces history of Village Gospel Mission (VGM)which was funded in 1971. In 1981, the first pioneer area was started at Manjou, PingTong County. Since then, many churches have been planted in many other villages in Southern Taiwan. Most of the churches usually began without any basic church members.
