Qingming: A Hakka Homecoming
For Qingming Festival, one of our researchers visited his ancestral village in Meizhou for the first time, ever since his grandparents left over 70 years ago.
Born and raised in Guangzhou, Chan Wai Kwan is one of 75+ million Hakka (客家 or “guest people”), the most diasporic Chinese group with a long tradition of migration.

Description
Hakka street signs proclaim their separate ethnic identity in relation to other Chinese
This video contains a brief shot of the outside of a protestant church in Guangdong province. It's just north of the city of Meizhou. Also, interesting is that this is a center of the Chinese ethnic group known as the Hakka. The Hakka have a slightly different ethnic identity in relation to the majority/dominant Han Chinese. In the street sign in this video you can see that it proudly proclaims Hakka Good. Hakka people will quickly confirm to/for you that indeed they are Hakka (in Mandarin Chinese it is Kejia 客家). They tend to be much more straightforward, direct, forthright... than their Han Chinese counterparts. This is widely acknowledged to be so within China itself: both by Hakka people and Han Chinese alike. They are so interesting, and of course that honesty aspect I just mentioned as well.

Deng Xiaoping
Deng Xiaoping (Pinyin: Dèng Xiǎopíng, [tɤŋ˥˩ ɕjɑʊ˩ pʰiŋ˧˥] ( ); 22 August 1904 – 19 February 1997) was a Chinese politician and reformist leader of the People's Republic of China who, after Mao Zedong's death, led his country towards a market economy. While Deng never held office as the head of state, head of government or General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (de jure leader of the Communist Party of China), he nonetheless was the paramount leader of the People's Republic of China from 1978 to 1992. As the core of the second-generation leaders, Deng shared his power with several powerful older politicians commonly known as the Eight Elders.
Born into a peasant background in Guang'an, Sichuan, Deng studied and worked in France in the 1920s, where he was influenced by Marxism-Leninism. He joined the Communist Party of China in 1923. Upon his return to China he worked as a political commissar in rural regions and was considered a revolutionary veteran of the Long March. Following the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, Deng worked in Tibet and other southwestern regions to consolidate Communist control.
