Mekong Delta Floating Markets // Can Tho, Vietnam
Riding in a boat for seven hours through the Mekong Delta region was probably one of the most wonderful experiences I have had since the beginning of my travels. I generally love begin on water, and to see a community and system of commerce in these waterways was such a treat!
In this video, I take you along as we visit the Cai Rang and Phong Dien floating markets. We also stop by a rice noodle maker and a local village. See how the locals live and work on and around the water while taking in the breathtakingly lush environment.
THE DEETS
-I stayed in Can Tho, a quieter city from the tourist hub of the Delta region, My Tho
-I arranged the tour with my hotel. From what I can tell, this is a tour set up by a local agency with a standard price across the board. Leave in the comments if you find a similar tour of different cost.
-There are two tours you can take: a 3-hour ride or a 7-hour ride
-For the 7-hour tour, it's $38 per boat, which carried up to 3 people. I don't have the cost of the 3-hour excursion.
-You'll be picked up at your accommodation at 5:30 AM and be brought to the dock. The cost is included in your purchase.
-Bring money for lunch, beverages, anything purchased at the markets, and a tip for your driver.
-Bring water, sunscreen, and plastic bags to waterproof your valuables.
-Life vests are provided in case of an emergency.
-When you return, there will be no transportation provided back to your accommodations.

A BLACK TRAVEL VLOG: Home Stay Life At The Mekong Delta Can Tho, Vietnam
Today is my last day on the 2 day 1 night Mekong Delta tour in Vietnam. It's actually not that far from Ho Chi Minh CIty. A nice change from the bustling streets of Saigon if your ever visiting. This tour was jam packed with so many activities to experience the delicious food, true culture, and local people of Vietnam. I had several amazing moments but learning how to make traditional rice paper was definitely a major highlight!

My Experience Traveling To The Mekong Delta! 24 Hours In Can Tho, Vietnam As A Black Woman
In today's vlog Im going on a tour of the Mekong Delta! The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam is a vast maze of rivers, swamps and islands, home to floating markets, Khmer pagodas and villages surrounded by rice paddies. Boats are the main means of transportation, and tours of the region often start in nearby Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) or Can Tho, a bustling town in the heart of the delta.

Mekong Delta Tour in Can Tho | Vietnam
Mekong Delta Tour in Can Tho, Vietnam.
Arrived in the south of Vietnam, we were immediately approached by a boat driver, whether we would like to do a short boat tour in the sunset. After careful consideration and lack of plans, we have agreed. The tour was worth every penny!
The next day we made the well-known tour to the Floating Markets. An impressive experience, especially since only a few tourists were traveling.
Already at noon we left for Soc Trăng to take the speedboat to Con Dao the next day.
MEKONG DELTA VIETNAM - Saigon Day Trip
We experienced local life along the Mekong Delta Vietnam for our last day in Saigon. We show you the best Saigon day trip that Vietnam has to offer, traveling by boat down the Mekong Delta and exploring a local Vietnam village along the way.
Our trip to the Mekong Delta Vietnam started with a 2 hour luxury van ride to a town called My Tho. Although we don’t normally take public tours, we arranged a small 6 person group tour with Vietnam Adventure Tours. Once we arrived in My Tho, we boarded a private boat to set sail down the Mekong Delta River. The 15 minute boat ride took us across the Mekong river to unicorn island where we explored a tourist area set up to mimic a traditional Vietnam Village. The activities on this island include: Bee Farm and Honey Tasting, Snake Holding, Coconut Candy Production, Chocolate Production, Snake Wine, and a Fruit Farm with traditional Mekong Delta music.
Next we got back on the Vietnam boat tour down the Mekong Delta to visit the area of Ben Tre. This is where we got to see a side of a more authentic Vietnam by boating down the river in a small sampan boat. This is one of the best things to do in Vietnam because you get to experience a world away from all development. We wish this part of the Mekong river tour was longer, as the small sampan boat ride was only 15 minutes long.
Next up on the Mekong Delta Tour was lunch which was included in our tour and very delicious. We were served a variety of Vietnamese food including fish, spring rolls, soup, rice, morning glory and prawns. The Vietnamese lunch was absolutely delicious!
When visiting Saigon Vietnam, we highly recommend you put a Mekong Delta Tour on your list of must do activities. Out of all the things to do in Saigon, this was one of our favorites! A quick 2 hour Saigon day trip away seems like a completely separate world apart from the hustle of Ho Chi Minh City.
If you’re interested in booking one of the best tours in Saigon, contact Vietnam Adventure Tours and request Van as your tour guide! The tour you see is the VIP Mekong Delta Tour with a luxury 7 person limo. Most Mekong tours start from $15 USD and go up to $80 USD for a public tour, and private tours are $80 USD per person and up. We hope you enjoyed our trip down the Vietnam Mekong Delta and if you have any questions please leave us a comment! We’d love to hear about your Vietnam travel or plans to visit the area.

The Mekong Delta is Life - Can Tho, Vietnam
This week on Exploring Vietnam, I explore the largest city in the Mekong Delta, Can Tho. Via bicycle, boat, and foot I check out the various life that makes Can Tho the amazing vibrant place that it is. In the countryside, I see rice paddy fields and fruit trees. In Tân An market, I identify some of the areas favorite fish. And a boat trip to the floating market Cai Rang has my head spinning at the beautiful ballet of chaos.

Vietnam - Can Tho City on the Mekong Delta
Can Tho is the main city of the Mekong Delta, the nine dragon river delta where the Mekong River empties into the South China Sea. It's also the main transportation center for the region. The extensive canals make for a pleasant boat ride, and the nearby floating markets offer authentic goods and exotic local fruit
Best Of Live Getting To Know Can Tho, Vietnam-The Mekong River Delta
Can Tho, Vietnam is the largest city in the Mekong River Delta region, famous as a destination for Mekong River Floating Market tours. It was one of the highlights of my most recent visit to Vietnam. Upon arrival in Can Tho, approximately 3.5 hours by bus from Ho Chi Minh City, I decided to immediately head for riverside, naturally where most travellers gravitate and explore the streets, night market, temples, and shops in the area. I also wanted to investigate hiring a boat for a tour the next morning. Some of my best and fondest memories of traveling are seeing a place for the first time. It's always exciting getting familiar with unknown territory. Night markets, cafes, fruit stands and Ho Chi Minh statues are not much different from one end of the country to the other but the settings are as well as the people and local culture. Throughout Vietnam you will find a mostly friendly attitude towards foreigners, from outgoing to reserved but friendly. In Can Tho and I believe much of the Mekong River Delta region locals are very hospitable. I was setting up my camera crouched on the side of a street one afternoon when behind me a friendly older man had brought out a plastic chair for me to sit on. Vietnam has a plethora of famous cities and destinations that are highly recommended by guide books and travel experts from the centers of commerce, arts, and politics like Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, to the picturesque and historic cities of Hoi An and Hue. Can Tho is certainly a favorite of mine now. It doesn't have the same charming and historic atmosphere of Hoi An but it also doesn't draw excessive crowds and with the exception of the boat ladies who aggressively sell boat tours, is not hyper-focused on tourist wallets. Two or three days of hanging out in Can Tho, taking in some river excursions and visiting local temples and sites would be a wonderful diversion from the big cities and tourist towns. Tasty cheap local food, like 60 cents for a big bowl of noodles, a fantastic selection of tropical fruit, and simple street side cafes in a wonderfully laid back environment will have you contemplating retirement if not here, somewhere in Southeast Asia.

Travel Guide to Mekong - Vietnam
Legend has it that those who visit Can Tho wish never to leave as it's one of the most delightful stopovers in the South. Lying on the southernmost tributary of the Mekong, Can Tho is the Delta's largest provincial capital city and political hub. It thrives as an agricultural centre and major rice milling town.

Touring the Cai Rang Floating Market along the Mekong Delta near Can Tho, Vietnam
On the second day of our Mekong Delta boat tour, we cruised over to the Cai Rang floating market to check out all of the hustle and bustle and commotion taking place in Can Tho, Vietnam. This was excursion would be the centerpiece activity of our tour for the day.
Not long after we started cruising down the Mekong Delta, our boat stopped at a floating gas station to fill up. While gas was be pumped into our boat I couldn't help but notice two sleeping dogs; they looked extremely docile and I instantly wondered how/if they received enough exercise. As we continued on our boat journey, we noticed ladies wearing conical hats paddling simple crafts all the way to large vessels with a crew; these waters were certainly anything but calm.

As we approached the actual floating market the pace of activity and exchange really started to pick up. The majority of trade appeared to be involving the exchange of tropical fruits - especially pineapples- being tossed in the air from one boat to another. It was fascinating watching the contrast between those who were sleeping and taking it easy on their boats versus the very productive workers who at times were scooping water out of their boat or hauling or tossing multiple items from one craft to another.
A small boat pulled up alongside powered by a Vietnamese lady and a very determined and somewhat overzealous little hustling son. With enthusiasm and charm this little Vietnamese boy was able to sell skewered pineapple sticks and iced coffee to a large percentage of the tourists on our boat - including both of us. They must have made a small fortune; good for them ;)
Overall, the market offered a glimpse of what life is like at a floating market although we did find it a bit touristy - with many parts seemingly more catered towards selling to tourists rather than locals:

From Hoa Ninh to Can Tho (Mekong Delta) - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
From Hoa Ninh, we continue by boat for about 2 km. Just before we reach another big branch of the Mekong. Our first stop is Út Thủy Homestay. It is an accommodation with adjoining restaurant. Small pavilions with dining tables line above the shore of a small lake. Our bicycle group arrives and we go for lunch.
But before, I do some film shots of the area and surroundings. Everything leaves a very relaxed impression. Some people lie in hammocks and surf on their laptop or read a book. Others come together to have a joint cup of coffee or a refreshment.
Suddenly a man approaches us and asks us what we are doing here. I tell him that we want to capture the beauty of the location in the video. We learned that he is an American who came to Vietnam with the Office of Strategic Services, in the 1960s. After the war, he returned to the United States. But after retiring from active service, he came back to Vietnam. He likes this place so much that he wants to stay and lets just transferred his boat from the USA. We talk for a while and I film him as a reminder. Then we have to go back to our group.
Our next destination is just a few meters away, so we set out on foot. Here, Út Thủy Homestay runs a company for the production of confectionery.
First, one shows us a small snake. We will learn later what it is used for. Then we experience the production of rice snacks. With simple means, but professional and with skillful hands, the staff bakes, rolls out, cuts, and packages the sweets. They use some devices for rasping coconut and to press for syrup.
A woman makes extremely thin edible rice paper. We noticed it already in the garden, where one puts it to dry. In a different place, a lady packages homemade candies.
In the rear of the farm, you can buy various food. We discover several glass containers filled with liquor in which cobras and other snakes are preserved. Well, it does not meet our taste. Our boat trip continues since we have 3 more hours ahead of us.
.....
please read more:

Homestay in Vietnam's Mekong Delta - Can Tho
We got dropped of at an access road to Can Tho and picked up by two guys with motorbikes. It took around 15-20 minutes till we arrived at the homestay. The hut or bungalow was very basic as you can imagine and we went to bed after dinner and a couple of beers with some fellow travelers. The next morning we had to get up at 6am. The family served egg omelette and baguette bread with soy sauce for breakfast. Afterwards we were brought by a small boat to the big boat before visiting Asia's biggest floating market - Cai Rang floating market.
Cai Rang Floating Market - Mekong Delta / Can Tho - Vietnam
Cai Rang Floating Market
Location: Cai Rang District, Can Tho City, about 30 minutes by boat from Ninh Kieu Wharf.
Characteristics: Cai Rang Floating Market specializes in agricultural products of Mekong River Delta.
(TITC) - The market stretches half kilometre from Cai Rang Bridge downstream Can Tho River. From early morning to 8-9am everyday, hundreds boats gather here to sell agricultural products.
Most of the boats are loaded with a lot of agricultural products and specialties of Mekong River Delta such as vegetables, coconut, banana, watermelon, grapefruit, dragon fruit and so on. Small boats which sell drinks and food for breakfast go among the others to serve market-goers and visitors. Other products such as clothes, candy, medicine... are available here, not different from what are sold in mainland markets.
To Cai Rang Floating Market, visitors will be excited with the scenery of crowded trade. Sometimes, buyers catch some products thrown by sellers from other boats. Visitors can also observe floating houses of the locals along the riverside.
Cai Rang Floating Market is an attractive destination for visitors, especially international visitors to explore river life of Southern people.
