MEKONG DELTA VIETNAM - Saigon Day Trip
We experienced local life along the Mekong Delta Vietnam for our last day in Saigon. We show you the best Saigon day trip that Vietnam has to offer, traveling by boat down the Mekong Delta and exploring a local Vietnam village along the way.
Our trip to the Mekong Delta Vietnam started with a 2 hour luxury van ride to a town called My Tho. Although we don’t normally take public tours, we arranged a small 6 person group tour with Vietnam Adventure Tours. Once we arrived in My Tho, we boarded a private boat to set sail down the Mekong Delta River. The 15 minute boat ride took us across the Mekong river to unicorn island where we explored a tourist area set up to mimic a traditional Vietnam Village. The activities on this island include: Bee Farm and Honey Tasting, Snake Holding, Coconut Candy Production, Chocolate Production, Snake Wine, and a Fruit Farm with traditional Mekong Delta music.
Next we got back on the Vietnam boat tour down the Mekong Delta to visit the area of Ben Tre. This is where we got to see a side of a more authentic Vietnam by boating down the river in a small sampan boat. This is one of the best things to do in Vietnam because you get to experience a world away from all development. We wish this part of the Mekong river tour was longer, as the small sampan boat ride was only 15 minutes long.
Next up on the Mekong Delta Tour was lunch which was included in our tour and very delicious. We were served a variety of Vietnamese food including fish, spring rolls, soup, rice, morning glory and prawns. The Vietnamese lunch was absolutely delicious!
When visiting Saigon Vietnam, we highly recommend you put a Mekong Delta Tour on your list of must do activities. Out of all the things to do in Saigon, this was one of our favorites! A quick 2 hour Saigon day trip away seems like a completely separate world apart from the hustle of Ho Chi Minh City.
If you’re interested in booking one of the best tours in Saigon, contact Vietnam Adventure Tours and request Van as your tour guide! The tour you see is the VIP Mekong Delta Tour with a luxury 7 person limo. Most Mekong tours start from $15 USD and go up to $80 USD for a public tour, and private tours are $80 USD per person and up. We hope you enjoyed our trip down the Vietnam Mekong Delta and if you have any questions please leave us a comment! We’d love to hear about your Vietnam travel or plans to visit the area.

My Mekong Delta Cruise – Saigon (Vietman) to Siem Reap (Cambodia)
Highlights from my Mekong Delta Cruise (October 2016) from Saigon in Vietnam to Siem reap in Cambodia. Video courtesy of
The tour started with sightseeing Saigon (Ho Chi Minh), welcoming dinner etc. I added an extra couple of days in Saigon to explore other “non-touristy” areas.
From Saigon we went to My Tho where we boarded the CruiseCo Adventurer and set sail for Cai Be. The ship was extremely comfortable with private deck etc. The food was excellent and nightly performances were organised. There was only about 30 guest on the tour and they broke us into groups of two for day excursions… which was a good idea.
Next morning we visited Cai Be to see the floating markets and other local attractions. Lunch was on board the Cruiseco Adventurer followed by a visit to the village of Sa Dec.
The next day was to Tan Chau and the Border Crossing into Cambodia. We toured the town on a rickshaw and watched navigated narrow channels by boat.
The ship docked in the Capital City Phnom Penh overnight. In the afternoon we visited the Khmer Rouge’s Toul Sleng Detention Centre and the Killing Fields.
There are around 20,000 mass grave sites where at least 1,386,734 people were executed under the Khmer Rouge Regime between 1975 and 1979.
It is estimated up to 2.5 million people died from Khmer Rouge policies, including starvation and disease. That was out of a population of roughly 8 million in 1975.
Vietnam invaded Cambodia (then called Democratic Kampuchea) in 1979 and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime. A very sad history.
The next morning we explored Phnom Penh on our own by Tuk Tuk. After lunch on board the ship sailed for Chong Koh, where we visit some traditional handicraft workshops.
The next day it was on to Oudong to visit a Buddhist monastery. Then on to Kapong Tralach Pleu where we took an ox cart ride to the Tonle River. Not overly comfortable but a lot of fun!
We were lucky to be cruising in early October during the high water season so didn’t need to take the long bus trip on our journey to Siem Reap. We visited the rural port town of Kampong Chhnang and explored the busy (but dirty and interesting) markets.
The vessel dropped anchor and tied up to a tree mid-stream, so we could take a boat trip into the lake-side wetlands. The ship moored near Siem Reap.
In Siem Reap we toured Angkor Wat which is the world’s largest temple. It was stinking hot and humid but a wonderful experience.
I didn’t bother with the arranged tour of more temples the next day, but instead got a Tuk Tuk and explored Siem Reap including and visit to the War Museum which I found enlightening. I stayed in Siem Reap a couple more days to explore more of the city and surrounds.
Overall, the trip was amazing! Thanks CruiseCo.
Mekong Delta Tour with Mango Cruises, Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam
Getting out on to the Mekong Delta and exploring the surrounding areas is one of the best things you can do while visiting Ho Chi Minh (Saigon).
This video highlights our experience in this beautiful are with Mango Tours who we can highly recommend. As you will see the private tour took us not only on the river itself but also to visit several local areas where they made anything from bricks to rice paper.
We hope you enjoy our video, which was shot using a DJI OSMO

Cruise the Mighty Mekong River from its Delta in Vietnam to Phnom Penh, Cambodia – 4K
We board our fast boat near Vinh Long in the Mekong Delta and head for Cambodia and Phnom Penh situated at the meeting point of three great rivers – the Mekong, the Tonle Sap and the Bassac. We leave the busy Delta region behind to join the huge expanse of water that is the Mekong River, the densely populates river banks are replaced by fish farms and an altogether more rural landscape. The river is still a busy transport artery, with all kinds of goods being shipped in a variety of river craft, occasionally we past boats dredging the bottom of the river for sand. As we cross the border into Cambodia, the scenery is dominated by farming, with the occasional small village and temple, children can be seen playing along the banks, generally people seemed to be for more relaxed now we have left the busy delta behind. Finally as the sun is setting, Phnom Penh looms on the distant horizon, beckoning us with bright lights and an attractive promenade. We bid farewell to the crew of our boat, with fond memories of a wonderful day.

MEKONG DELTA Tour VIETNAM: Mekong RIVER CRUISE day trip video
The Mekong Delta Vietnam is famous for its floating markets. There are lots of ways to see the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, usually they start with a cruise along the Mekong River from Can Tho on a river cruise boat which can be of various sizes depending on your tour group size and if you want to share your Mekong Delta River Cruise with others.
I chose to take a private 1 day Mekong Delta Tour 1, but you could also take a 1/2 day tour from Can Tho if you are pushed for time. I think to see the Mekong Delta properly it would be wise to overnight in the Mekong Delta, you can stay at a Mekong Delta Homestay such as the homestay I visit for lunch in this Vietnam Travel Vlog.

Mekong Delta Travel Video: Things to do along the Mekong, Vietnam Top Attractions
Recently I completed a three day tour along the Mekong Delta in southern most region of Vietnam. The tour itself was somewhat of an exercise in futility, as I've honestly never seen such inefficiency in an itinerary in my entire travels. We literally were spending hours on end traveling by bus, waiting for passengers and backtracking for various reasons. I could write an entire essay on this subject; however, my lovely girlfriend Audrey recently wrote a fantastic summary of our Mekong delta misadventures on her blog. Although the tour itself was less than stellar, we did capture some great footage and certain fragments of the journey (when added up as a whole rather than considered as distinct parts) wasn't as bad as the tour overall. The following is a list of activities to consider doing when doing a tour of the Mekong Delta which we recommend wholeheartedly you consider doing independently:

1) Paddle Down The Mekong Delta
Whether you jump in a rowboat all by yourself or have a local Vietnamese wearing a conical hat act as skipper, paddling down the Mekong Delta was one of our favorite experiences on our three day tour.
2) Visiting A Floating Market
The hectic parade of activity that's also know as the local floating markets is a fascinating spectacle to behold. From pineapple tossing to fishing the market is as lively as they come. What's fascinating is that all of this takes place on the water where you have an opportunity to experience all of it for a couple of hours.
3) Mingle With Friendly Locals At A Cham Island Settlment
The opportunity to visit with local minority Cham villages was probably my favorite experience. As a visible minority group (Islamic in their beliefs) the Cham villagers are radiant warm people who will smile and pose for photos while waving at you. Their distinct clothing and headdress is quite impressive.
4) Feed Catfish at a Fish Farm
Throwing pellets of fish food into a tiny open space of water and watching a plethora of catfish fight over the scraps wasn't one of the highlights of my journey but it's likely a stop along the way if you're on a tour. If going it alone we'd recommend skipping this.
5) Listening to a traditional Vietnamese music and singing performance is something we relished after spending hours out on the boat. The soothing and distinct sound of the music along with fruit refreshments and tea helped us to cool down and recharge for the rest of the afternoon.
6) Climb Cave Pagoda
Finally, for those who make it all the way to Chau Doc (nearby the Vietnamese - Cambodian border) make sure to climb all the way up to Cave Pagoda for some breathtaking views of rice fields, stilt villages and greenery. With a Buddha decked out in sunglasses it's just the kind of quirky place we recommend highly.

1) Paddle xuống Đồng bằng sông Cửu Long

Mekong Delta Tour, Ho Chi Minh Vietnam
This is our 3rd video. Where we take a tour to the Mekong Delta. We took a nice tour bus from HCMC to our destination. The tour was amazing! We captured pieces of the tour on camera simply because we were too busy enjoying ourselves. We listened to traditional Vietnamese music, viewed how they make coconut candy by hand, ate a delicious lunch, took a bike ride through the neighborhood. We also became bee hive specialists j.k and wrestled with a baby python snake. To get there we paddled through the Mekong River surrounded by palm trees and locals. We highly recommend taking a Mekong Delta Tour if you ever go to Ho Chi Minh City. We end our day watching the street bike races drinking a fresh fruit smoothie!
