Mekong Delta Floating Markets // Can Tho, Vietnam
Riding in a boat for seven hours through the Mekong Delta region was probably one of the most wonderful experiences I have had since the beginning of my travels. I generally love begin on water, and to see a community and system of commerce in these waterways was such a treat!
In this video, I take you along as we visit the Cai Rang and Phong Dien floating markets. We also stop by a rice noodle maker and a local village. See how the locals live and work on and around the water while taking in the breathtakingly lush environment.
THE DEETS
-I stayed in Can Tho, a quieter city from the tourist hub of the Delta region, My Tho
-I arranged the tour with my hotel. From what I can tell, this is a tour set up by a local agency with a standard price across the board. Leave in the comments if you find a similar tour of different cost.
-There are two tours you can take: a 3-hour ride or a 7-hour ride
-For the 7-hour tour, it's $38 per boat, which carried up to 3 people. I don't have the cost of the 3-hour excursion.
-You'll be picked up at your accommodation at 5:30 AM and be brought to the dock. The cost is included in your purchase.
-Bring money for lunch, beverages, anything purchased at the markets, and a tip for your driver.
-Bring water, sunscreen, and plastic bags to waterproof your valuables.
-Life vests are provided in case of an emergency.
-When you return, there will be no transportation provided back to your accommodations.

MEKONG DELTA VIETNAM - Saigon Day Trip
We experienced local life along the Mekong Delta Vietnam for our last day in Saigon. We show you the best Saigon day trip that Vietnam has to offer, traveling by boat down the Mekong Delta and exploring a local Vietnam village along the way.
Our trip to the Mekong Delta Vietnam started with a 2 hour luxury van ride to a town called My Tho. Although we don’t normally take public tours, we arranged a small 6 person group tour with Vietnam Adventure Tours. Once we arrived in My Tho, we boarded a private boat to set sail down the Mekong Delta River. The 15 minute boat ride took us across the Mekong river to unicorn island where we explored a tourist area set up to mimic a traditional Vietnam Village. The activities on this island include: Bee Farm and Honey Tasting, Snake Holding, Coconut Candy Production, Chocolate Production, Snake Wine, and a Fruit Farm with traditional Mekong Delta music.
Next we got back on the Vietnam boat tour down the Mekong Delta to visit the area of Ben Tre. This is where we got to see a side of a more authentic Vietnam by boating down the river in a small sampan boat. This is one of the best things to do in Vietnam because you get to experience a world away from all development. We wish this part of the Mekong river tour was longer, as the small sampan boat ride was only 15 minutes long.
Next up on the Mekong Delta Tour was lunch which was included in our tour and very delicious. We were served a variety of Vietnamese food including fish, spring rolls, soup, rice, morning glory and prawns. The Vietnamese lunch was absolutely delicious!
When visiting Saigon Vietnam, we highly recommend you put a Mekong Delta Tour on your list of must do activities. Out of all the things to do in Saigon, this was one of our favorites! A quick 2 hour Saigon day trip away seems like a completely separate world apart from the hustle of Ho Chi Minh City.
If you’re interested in booking one of the best tours in Saigon, contact Vietnam Adventure Tours and request Van as your tour guide! The tour you see is the VIP Mekong Delta Tour with a luxury 7 person limo. Most Mekong tours start from $15 USD and go up to $80 USD for a public tour, and private tours are $80 USD per person and up. We hope you enjoyed our trip down the Vietnam Mekong Delta and if you have any questions please leave us a comment! We’d love to hear about your Vietnam travel or plans to visit the area.

VIETNAM - Ho Chi Mihn City and Mekong delta
After three days in Ho Chi Mihn City, I visited Can Tho, the largest city of the Mekong delta. It was my intention to stay there only three nights and use it as base for my visit, by boat, for the nearby floating markets, Cai Rang and Phong Dien and the excursion along the many canals leading in the countryside.
At the end, I spent there nearly five days and when I left, I had the impression that I missed to capture the essence of the Mekong delta, the Vietnam's big rice basket.
Maybe one month earlier I could had found a different landscape with green or yellow rice paddies and met more farmers at work.
Before leaving Vietnam, I joined an organized tour to visit Ben Tre and My Tho.
CAN THO City in VIETNAM | Can Tho Travel Vlog tour of river area & street food
I took the bus to Can Tho from Saigon
(see my Vietnam Bus to Can Tho vlog here
*** *** )
and now that I have arrived in Can Tho I take a walk through the streets of Can Tho city centre down to the river area to find out what to do in Can Tho on your Vietnam holiday.
Can Tho is the largest city on the edge of the Mekong Delta. As sunset approaches I grab some drone video of Can Tho city revealing a guitar on the Can Tho pavement as the street food stalls are setting up. Like many towns in Vietnam the street food stall and night markets come alive at night here in Can Tho.
After my quick tour of Can Tho city I am heading for an early night, tomorrow I have an early start as I head out to see some of the famous Can Tho floating markets.

Cai Rang Floating Market Tour On Mekong Delta River Cruise Vietnam
To cap off our trip to Southern Vietnam we treated ourselves to a 3-day luxury river cruise in the Mekong Delta. It was the most fantastic experience, adventurous yet exciting at the same time!
Following a three hour drive from Saigon, we boarded the Mekong Eyes Explorer (the newest boat!) at Ben Tre. The first day was easy with a leisurely hike through a rural village. Day two was chock full of activity starting with an early tour of the Cai Rang Floating Market, a tour of a rice sheet and noodle factory, followed by a visit to Cho An Binh, Can Tho's largest land market, then transfer to the Mekong Eyes Classic, a traditional wood junk. In the afternoon we take a cooking class onboard and learn how to make banh khot! Day three we de-board the Classic and wrap up our trip with a sampan boat tour through a water village, tour and tea at a coconut candy factory, and a biking tour of Cai Be before getting in the bus back to Saigon.
Mekong Classic River Cruise (this was a fabulous tour company to work with!):

From Hoa Ninh to Can Tho (Mekong Delta) - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
From Hoa Ninh, we continue by boat for about 2 km. Just before we reach another big branch of the Mekong. Our first stop is Út Thủy Homestay. It is an accommodation with adjoining restaurant. Small pavilions with dining tables line above the shore of a small lake. Our bicycle group arrives and we go for lunch.
But before, I do some film shots of the area and surroundings. Everything leaves a very relaxed impression. Some people lie in hammocks and surf on their laptop or read a book. Others come together to have a joint cup of coffee or a refreshment.
Suddenly a man approaches us and asks us what we are doing here. I tell him that we want to capture the beauty of the location in the video. We learned that he is an American who came to Vietnam with the Office of Strategic Services, in the 1960s. After the war, he returned to the United States. But after retiring from active service, he came back to Vietnam. He likes this place so much that he wants to stay and lets just transferred his boat from the USA. We talk for a while and I film him as a reminder. Then we have to go back to our group.
Our next destination is just a few meters away, so we set out on foot. Here, Út Thủy Homestay runs a company for the production of confectionery.
First, one shows us a small snake. We will learn later what it is used for. Then we experience the production of rice snacks. With simple means, but professional and with skillful hands, the staff bakes, rolls out, cuts, and packages the sweets. They use some devices for rasping coconut and to press for syrup.
A woman makes extremely thin edible rice paper. We noticed it already in the garden, where one puts it to dry. In a different place, a lady packages homemade candies.
In the rear of the farm, you can buy various food. We discover several glass containers filled with liquor in which cobras and other snakes are preserved. Well, it does not meet our taste. Our boat trip continues since we have 3 more hours ahead of us.
.....
please read more:

Mekong Delta - MAJOR FAILSSS!! | Cai Rang Floating Market | Vietnam Vlog
Can Tho is the main city in Mekong Delta, located at the southern most part of Vietnam. My initial itinerary did not include Mekong Delta but a lot of backpackers who we met throughout our journey had mentioned about Mekong Delta and how we should not miss the floating markets as they are one of a kind.
So the next we did was catch a bus from HCMC to Can Tho which took us about 4.5 hours to get here.
You can book all buses, flights, ferries, and trains in Vietnam from this website:
Daily tours run from Can Tho to these floating markets but you can take a walk on Ninh Kieu Pier and some fishermen/women would approach you with a deal. We negotiated and got a private boat that took us to Cai Rang and Phong Dien markets for 400,000 VND but we gave 100,000 VND as tip to the lady who was taking us around.
Mekong delta is that part of Vietnam which is not usually on every traveler's list but I urge you to visit this region and see how different life runs around here.
Three things that went wrong during my visit:
1. Phone got stolen - Please take care of your belongings in South vietnam, theft is common.
2. Hostel room scam - Do check properly while booking hostels as the pictures can be misleading. Our room's bathroom did not have a door, instead had a floor to ceiling curtain dividing the two sections.
3. Floating markets were closed - We needed to do more research. Tet festival meant that people went on long vacations so we could not see the markets.
