After 8 days of vacation in Cambodia, we made it to Phnom Penh for a night at a floating suite! What an experience it was from catching a beautiful sunset to the serene atmosphere. We really enjoyed ourselves and MAADS is taking care of me for a full week out here in Phnom Penh. I'm so happy to be vlogging again!!

Cruise the Mighty Mekong River from its Delta in Vietnam to Phnom Penh, Cambodia – 4K
We board our fast boat near Vinh Long in the Mekong Delta and head for Cambodia and Phnom Penh situated at the meeting point of three great rivers – the Mekong, the Tonle Sap and the Bassac. We leave the busy Delta region behind to join the huge expanse of water that is the Mekong River, the densely populates river banks are replaced by fish farms and an altogether more rural landscape. The river is still a busy transport artery, with all kinds of goods being shipped in a variety of river craft, occasionally we past boats dredging the bottom of the river for sand. As we cross the border into Cambodia, the scenery is dominated by farming, with the occasional small village and temple, children can be seen playing along the banks, generally people seemed to be for more relaxed now we have left the busy delta behind. Finally as the sun is setting, Phnom Penh looms on the distant horizon, beckoning us with bright lights and an attractive promenade. We bid farewell to the crew of our boat, with fond memories of a wonderful day.
My Mekong Delta Cruise – Saigon (Vietman) to Siem Reap (Cambodia)
Highlights from my Mekong Delta Cruise (October 2016) from Saigon in Vietnam to Siem reap in Cambodia. Video courtesy of
The tour started with sightseeing Saigon (Ho Chi Minh), welcoming dinner etc. I added an extra couple of days in Saigon to explore other “non-touristy” areas.
From Saigon we went to My Tho where we boarded the CruiseCo Adventurer and set sail for Cai Be. The ship was extremely comfortable with private deck etc. The food was excellent and nightly performances were organised. There was only about 30 guest on the tour and they broke us into groups of two for day excursions… which was a good idea.
Next morning we visited Cai Be to see the floating markets and other local attractions. Lunch was on board the Cruiseco Adventurer followed by a visit to the village of Sa Dec.
The next day was to Tan Chau and the Border Crossing into Cambodia. We toured the town on a rickshaw and watched navigated narrow channels by boat.
The ship docked in the Capital City Phnom Penh overnight. In the afternoon we visited the Khmer Rouge’s Toul Sleng Detention Centre and the Killing Fields.
There are around 20,000 mass grave sites where at least 1,386,734 people were executed under the Khmer Rouge Regime between 1975 and 1979.
It is estimated up to 2.5 million people died from Khmer Rouge policies, including starvation and disease. That was out of a population of roughly 8 million in 1975.
Vietnam invaded Cambodia (then called Democratic Kampuchea) in 1979 and toppled the Khmer Rouge regime. A very sad history.
The next morning we explored Phnom Penh on our own by Tuk Tuk. After lunch on board the ship sailed for Chong Koh, where we visit some traditional handicraft workshops.
The next day it was on to Oudong to visit a Buddhist monastery. Then on to Kapong Tralach Pleu where we took an ox cart ride to the Tonle River. Not overly comfortable but a lot of fun!
We were lucky to be cruising in early October during the high water season so didn’t need to take the long bus trip on our journey to Siem Reap. We visited the rural port town of Kampong Chhnang and explored the busy (but dirty and interesting) markets.
The vessel dropped anchor and tied up to a tree mid-stream, so we could take a boat trip into the lake-side wetlands. The ship moored near Siem Reap.
In Siem Reap we toured Angkor Wat which is the world’s largest temple. It was stinking hot and humid but a wonderful experience.
I didn’t bother with the arranged tour of more temples the next day, but instead got a Tuk Tuk and explored Siem Reap including and visit to the War Museum which I found enlightening. I stayed in Siem Reap a couple more days to explore more of the city and surrounds.
Overall, the trip was amazing! Thanks CruiseCo.
RIVER CRUISE, PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA
At last I got the opportunity to ride that boat which I made video many times. View from the river to the city was priceless! River cruise on the Tonle Sap and Mekong river crossing is one of the most popular tourist attraction in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. For foreigners ticket cost is 5/- US$ and for locals 5000/- Riel (almost 1.25/- US$). In this 1 hour boat cruise, they provided a free drink. The best riding time is just before the evening/sunset to avoid heat and sun. They also offer boat tour with lunch/dinner + sunset view. Price depends on boat company and services. Watch and Enjoy!!

Cargo Ships on the Mighty Mekong River - Phnom Penh, Cambodia
WestIslandKev: July 8, 2013 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Sitting on my balcony on the 4th floor of the Paragon Hotel, I always enjoy sipping a nice cold drink and watching the shipping traffic on the Mekong River that flows below. Empty ships seem to flow from left to right and return so full that they look as though they are sinking.

Cruising on Tonle Sap and Mekong rivers| Happy boat party, Phnom Penh, Cambodia 2019
A boat trip is an excellent way to get a way from the busy and noisy streets of Phnom Penh and just enjoy a relaxing afternoon and sunset on Tonle Sap and Mekong River. A boat cruise typically takes about 1 – 2 hours and runs up the Tonle Sap River along the central riverfront area providing a photographic view of the Royal Palace and Phnom Penh skyline. The cruise continues across the Tonle Sap and up the Mekong River which will give you a sense of the country side close to Phnom Penh.
You can also turn the boat trip into a party either by asking the boat owner to arrange food, drinks and music or you bring it yourself. If you are bringing your own music don’t forget to ask the boat owner in what format you need to bring it in.
Short river cruises and sunset cruises are easy to arrange, the tourist boats are clustered together on the river along Sisowath Quay (Riverside) on the corner of street 118 . The price of the boat tour depend on the duration of the trip and the size of boats and not the number of the passengers. Small boat ( up to 20 passengers) cost about 15$/h , medium size (up to 30 passengers) about 20$/h, large size (up to 40 passengers) about 25$/h.

Mekon River,Phnom Penh
The Mekong is a river in Southeast Asia. It is the world's 12th-longest river and the 7th-longest in Asia. Its estimated length is 4,350 km (2,703 mi), and it drains an area of 795,000 km2 (307,000 sq mi), discharging 475 km3 (114 cu mi) of water annually.
From the Tibetan Plateau this river runs through China's Yunnan province, Burma (Myanmar), Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. In 1995, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam established the Mekong River Commission to assist in the management and coordinated use of the Mekong's resources. In 1996 China and Burma (Myanmar) became dialogue partners of the MRC and the six countries now work together within a cooperative framework.
The extreme seasonal variations in flow and the presence of rapids and waterfalls in this river have made navigation difficult. The river is a major trading route linking China's southwestern province of Yunnan to Laos, Burma (Myanmar) and Thailand to the south, an important trade route between western China and Southeast Asia.
Cambodia Mekong River Dwellers
The Mekong River and Tonle Sap Lake is the home to hundreds of thousands of Cambodians. Living in shacks built on stilts or floats they live far below what we would think of as the poverty level. No electricity, no clean fresh water, the alligators and poisonous snakes, they all share the life and disease the river gives as an oasis from the dense jungle surrounding them.
The River becomes the recipient of the processes of their living, they bathe in it, are born on it, and die on it. The heat is suffering, children in their innocence splash and play naked everywhere to escape it. Adults cover from head to toe to escape the sun and insects trying to feed on them. Still they ply the muddy brown waters in search of fish, debris or anything they can find to sell to bring home some food. There is no stress here from traffic jams, plunging stock markets or dropped Internet connections. Survival is from day to day, happiness is spontaneous, simple, and fleeting. Yet I received more friendly smiles and waves from these people than from any government official I met while in Cambodia. I witnessed police in Phnom Penh from my hotel window shaking down poor street vendors for money in the early morning hours while they set up their stalls. Never once did I see anyone on the river do this to their fellow River Dwellers. It was a great opportunity to witness the human spirit under such harsh conditions. qasia.com/angkorwat/mekong.
