Endangered Mekong River Irrawaddy Dolphins
Footage of endangered Mekong River dolphins swimming near Kratie, Cambodia on November 16. Bora Sim who works as a tour guide for a kayaking tour company chanced upon the Irrawaddy dolphins during work and took videos of the dolphins. He said: ''I just want to show it to the people and I hope they try to protect them more.'' In 1997 – when the first official census began - there were an estimated 200 Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong. Sadly this figure has gradually fallen, with only 80 left in 2015. But now the decline appears to be reversing.

Endangered DOLPHINS IN THE MEKONG in Kratie! Cambodia road trip
I took off on a road trip to Mondulkiri, Cambodia and stopped in Kratie where we saw Irrawaddy dolphins in the Mekong River! The dolphins are just 15km north of Kratie in Kampi village. Kratie is a mellow riverside town, which is not overrun by tourists, but does still draw the long-term traveler/backpacker crowd. We mainly stopped there to see the famous freshwater dolphins in the Mekong River, but also enjoyed just walking around Kratie. It was also Buddha's birthday so there was some additional excitement in town.

Tận mắt chứng kiến cá heo sông Mekong - tỉnh Kratie/Cambodia - Dolphin at Mekong river at Cambodia

April is the hottest time in Cambodia. Even in the afternoon temperatures descend I did not know. But I had to take the boat again. Meet the Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphin owner called wihaeseoda. There already are numerous river boats are competing with each other to grab a good seat. Tourists waiting while forgetting anything except the neck sunburned, dolphins finally appeared. But soon he went into the water like a dolphin nicknamed one seconds. Is watching too much killing. Dolphins did not come readily to my side. At that moment I saw the eyes of the Irrawaddy dolphin. Referred to as a very brief moment, but Irrawaddy dolphins are an endangered species remaining, barely out of 100 horses is now smiling dolphins in the Mekong River bulrineunde called because facial expressions. After the fall of Pol Pot's regime it did not protect the dolphins in anarchy. By bored soldiers were also shooting a gun, and it's also a lot of dead, throwing bombs. If you can be a long time to see the beautiful Mekong River Irrawaddy dolphin smile of hope, like a sunset.

Freshwater Irrawaddy Mekong Dolphin Watching - Kratie, Cambodia
WestIslandKev filmed: February 4, 2015 - Kratie, Cambodia.
Amazing Day hiring a boat for an hour and touring around catching wonderful glimpses of the amazing beautiful Irrawaddy Freshwater Dolphins on the Mekong River. I enjoyed the 1.5 hour trip up river from Kratie to the Dolphin viewing area as well as the 1 hour viewing them. It was a fun day and we saw much of life along the river. Around 20 kilometres north of Kratie, at the village of Kampi, the swirling waters of the Mekong are considered one of the best places in the world to see the critically endangered Mekong Irrawaddy dolphin.
Info:
The Mekong dolphin population is now restricted to the upper 190km (190km = 118.06 miles) of the Cambodian Mekong River, from Kratie north to the Laos/Cambodian border. Photo-identification studies have shown that the total population was an estimated 127 individuals in 2005, as may now be as few as 86
Irrawaddy dolphin is not a true river dolphin but an oceanic type that has developed after years to live in the freshwater of Irrawaddy River. Irrawaddy dolphins are a very lovely and helpful animal that are considered a friend and a lucky charm to the local fishers. They are known to help fishermen drive fish into their nets. Classified as critically endangered.
The Irrawaddy Dolphin is distinctive in that unlike the majority of species of dolphin which have a long nose and pointed features, the Irrawaddy species has a blunt nose and straight mouth, rounded tail and fins, and can grow up to 9 meters in length. It's this appearance, along with its extraordinarily intelligent behaviour, that leads many Cambodian's to liken the dolphin to man, and they refer to the Irrawaddy Dolphin as' half man, half fish'. The dolphins are found in many rivers all over the Asian continent, but were first discovered in Myanmar and the name 'Irrawaddy' is given to them after the name of the famous Burmese River in which they were originally spotted.
In Cambodia, they habitate a large part of the Mekong river, and the majority of this dolphin territory is in the section of river that runs through the picturesque, rural and traditional town of Kratie in east-central Cambodia. Locals who fish in the Mekong in Kratie frequently praise the dolphins for their intelligence and the part they play in unique fishing techniques where they play the most important role, reacting to careful calls and driving fish toward the fisherman. They are beautiful to watch, inquisitive and playful.
The Irrawaddy Dolphins of Kratie are protected under an environmental act drafted by the Cambodian government, however they are endangered, and we ask anyone to please respect their habitats and be sensitive to their environment.

Mekong fresh water river dolphins, Kratie, Cambodia
Visiting Wild Irrawaddy Dolphins in the Mekong River, Kratie, Cambodia
During our time in Kratie, Cambodia, we took a trip to see the wild Irrawaddy Dolphins who live in the Mekong River. It was rainy season when we arrived and the river was at its highest, reaching right up to the very edge of the river bank. This made the water a large expanse of murky brown and we hoped we would see the beautiful creatures through it.
This is the only place we should see Dolphins. In the wild exhibiting their own natural behaviours through fishing, playing, courting, and living free from exploitation and abuse. If you want to see a Dolphin, please do not ever go to Seaworld or anywhere like it. We wrote comprehensively about this subject on our blog and you can watch two very eye opening documentaries called The Cove and Blackfish. We didn’t see the Dolphins jumping or doing backflips in the air, but we did see them free in the wild living as they choose to and that is worth more to us than being part of a crowd of moronic overeaters cheering when an imprisoned animal splashes them in order to get a fish.

Mekong River Dolphins and People (English-version)
Mekong River Dolphins and People: Shared River, Shared Future
The iconic Irrawaddy dolphin was once plentiful in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, but was decimated during the region's turbulent recent past. Now threatened by fishing nets and proposed hydropower dams, the species is on the verge of extinction in the Mekong. With fewer than 100 dolphins remaining in the river, the Cambodian government has banned the use of gillnets to prevent the accidental catching of dolphins. Gillnet use is potentially destructive to both fish and dolphins. Restrictions on gillnet use however, can create hardships for the people who use gillnets to feed their family and make a living. To support these people, WWF has partnered with local government and development agencies to provide education and alternative livelihood opportunities in communities along the Mekong to mitigate these hardships and gain support to save the Mekong's critically endangered dolphins.
This video was released as part of celebrating the International Freshwater Dolphin Day on Oct 24th 2012. A ceremony was organised by WWF and the Cambodian Government at Kampi site, Kratie province - home of the Mekong's Irrawaddy dolphin located north-eastern Cambodia.

Mekong River Dolphins, Cambodia
In the last two and a half years, we've never mentioned fresh-water dolphins - that doesn't mean we haven't been trying to find them. Scouring the rivers of eastern India for Gangetic dolphins and Myanmar for Irrawaddy dolphins, we've been looking and looking and looking. No luck.
It turns out that our lucky river was the Mekong. At long last, we've finally found them in Kratie, Cambodia. And when the luck came, it really came.
Most people searching for fresh water dolphins are lucky to see a quick flash of dorsal fin or flipper. We, on the other hand, had tails, flippers, fins and the occasional head splashing and bobbing around us as somewhere between 9 and 12 dolphins encircled our boat.
