Nellie Melba
Dame Nellie Melba GBE, born Helen Porter Mitchell, was an Australian operatic soprano. She became one of the most famous singers of the late Victorian era and the early 20th century. She was the first Australian to achieve international recognition as a classical musician. She took the pseudonym Melba from Melbourne, her home town.
Melba studied singing in Melbourne and made a modest success in performances there. After a brief and unsuccessful marriage, she moved to Europe in search of a singing career. Failing to find engagements in London in 1886, she studied in Paris and soon made a great success there and in Brussels. Returning to London she quickly established herself as the leading lyric soprano at Covent Garden from 1888. She soon achieved further success in Paris and elsewhere in Europe, and later at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, debuting there in 1893. Her repertoire was small; in her whole career she sang no more than 25 roles and was closely identified with only ten. She was known for her performances in French and Italian opera, but sang little German opera.

Strauss: Morgen - Frances Alda, Gutia Casini, Frank la Forge (incomplete)

Frances Alda (31 May 1879 -- 18 September 1952) was a New Zealand-born, Australian-raised operatic soprano. She achieved fame during the first three decades of the 20th century due to her outstanding singing voice, fine technique and colourful personality, as well as her frequent onstage partnerships at the New York Metropolitan Opera with Enrico Caruso.
Alda was born Fanny Jane Davis in Christchurch, New Zealand, into a musical family. Fifteen months after her birth, Alda's parents divorced. She spent her early years travelling with her mother on her operatic tours. After her mother's death, Alda was sent to live with her maternal grandparents in Melbourne, Australia. She sang in productions of Gilbert and Sullivan in Melbourne before leaving Australia for Europe at the age of 22 in order to undertake additional study and pursue an international singing career like her future soprano rival Nellie Melba. After receiving lessons in Paris from the renowned teacher Mathilde Marchesi, who gave her her stage name, Alda made her debut at the Opéra-Comique in 1904 in Massenet's Manon. She appeared at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1906 and at La Scala, Milan, during the 1906-1908 seasons. In 1910, she married the La Scala impresario Giulio Gatti-Casazza.
According to American Art News (New York, March 19, 1910), the Swiss-born American artist Adolfo Müller-Ury was painting her just before she married Giulio Gatti-Casazza on 4 April 1910. Alda's husband had become director of the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in 1908. It was in New York that Alda furthered her career, appearing to acclaim in such famous operas as Martha, Manon Lescaut, Otello, Faust, Mefistofele and La bohème. It was during this time that she recorded for the Victor Talking Machine Company. Alda created the title roles in Victor Herbert's Madeleine and Henry Hadley's Cleopatra's Night as well as Roxane in Walter Damrosch's Cyrano. She also sang regularly with Enrico Caruso, perhaps the most renowned Italian male singer of the 20th century.
Alda toured Australia and New Zealand in 1927. She and Gatti-Casazza separated the following year and then divorced. In 1929, she left the Met but continued to give concerts, make radio broadcasts and appear in vaudeville.
Alda's 1937 autobiography was titled Men, Women, & Tenors. The book reflects her fiery, forthright temperament and acerbic wit. She remarried in America in 1941 and travelled extensively in later life. She died of a stroke in Venice, Italy, aged 73.
Frank La Forge (Rockford, Illinois, October 22, 1879 -- New York, New York, May 5, 1953) was an American pianist and composer and arranger of art songs.
La Forge was a boy soprano, famous in his hometown of Rockford, Illinois. He first studied piano with his older sister, and went to Vienna in 1900 to study with Theodor Leschetizky. In the following years he toured Europe, Russia, and the United States as an accompanist to Marcella Sembrich. He moved to New York City in 1920, where he became a music teacher, coach, and accompanist. He died at the piano, performing at a Musician's Club dinner.
La Forge accompanied many important opera singers, including Marcella Sembrich, Ernestine Schumann-Heink, Lily Pons, Johanna Gadski and Lucrezia Bori. He taught a number of important American singers, including Marian Anderson, Lawrence Tibbett, Marie Powers, and Richard Crooks. In performance he usually accompanied entirely from memory, considered an unusual feat for an accompanist. His biography in Pathways of Song claimed that he had 'a repertoire of over five thousand memorized accompaniments embracing all schools'. The Victor record catalog is full of examples of his playing, many with Marcella Sembrich and Lucrezia Bori. He recorded a few piano solos, as well as two works accompanying at the organ in 1912, 'Berceuse' and 'Le Cygne' (most likely the famous work by Saint-Saëns) with 'cellist Gutia Casini.
La Forge composed around 40 songs for voice and piano in the years between 1906 and 1940, as well as a few piano solos, choral works, and at least one solo for violin and piano. Some of the songs are sacred, and most were published individually by G. Schirmer, while a few have been reissued in various song anthologies and collections of American art songs from the same publisher. Many of his early songs were composed to German texts and modeled on the German Lied. Later songs were composed in the more accessible 'concert ballad' style, which was quite popular at the time. Many were written for specific singers to show off their individual talents. The songs are known for their craftsmanship, full piano accompaniments, and tasteful musical style. His 1919 piece Song of the Open was highlighted by Upton as representative of American song from the era 1900-1930.

On the 28th of March 2017, an international forum of invited experts spent a day at Elizabeth Bay House sharing their knowledge about music making in historic houses. Sound Heritage Sydney brought together musicians, scholars and heritage practitioners to discuss what and how music was played in historic houses and at other historic sites. The forum was also interested in uncovering innovative ways music can be used to reveal new narratives in historic properties for contemporary visitors.
