Terima kasih...

Melbourne Airport T2 Luxury launch
Luxury has landed! A refurbished retail and dining precinct has now opened in Terminal 2
Melbourne International Airport (Tullamarine)- 1970s
Family Super 8 film of Melbourne International Airport (in the suburb of Tullamarine) from the 1970s, roughly between 1977-1979. At the time of this film being taken the airport was near-new, having replaced the smaller Essendon Airport as Melbourne’s international airport in 1970.
In this film a number of different aircraft and airlines can be seen, some of which no longer exist or fly to Melbourne.
• Ansett operating domestic routes in Australia with a number of McDonnell Douglas DC9 twin jets and Boeing 727 trijets seen from the domestic gates and taking off from Runway 09/27. All aircraft have the ‘delta’ livery of that era.
• British Airways Boeing 747-100 – the first generation Jumbo Jets with the six windows on the upper deck of the aircraft before the upper deck became premium passenger seating;
• Qantas Boeing 747-200 series – the next model with additional upper deck windows used by the airline for longer haul routes. This was a time when Qantas was an international-only airline operating the 747-200 and 300 variants;
• Alitalia McDonnell Douglas DC10 trijet. Alitalia terminated its services to Australia via Bangkok in 2000.
• Pan Am Boeing 707 four engine jet. Pan Am’s deteriorating financial condition in the 1980s saw its Pacific Division sold to United Airlines in 1985. The airline itself filed for bankruptcy in 1991 ceasing all operations by December of that year.
Many thanks to Scana1979 for providing the background historical information for the description and Vaxfacts for this video. Check out his YouTube channel here:
This footage was filmed by my uncle Mario, and was digitised with a Reflecta Super 8 Movie Film Scanner.
Vaxfacts: The Tullamarine site was acquired in 1959 by the Commonwealth Government, when post-war growth in air travel and the introduction of larger jet aircraft meant that Essendon would not be capable of meeting future demand. Construction of what was termed Tullamarine ‘jetport’ started in late 1964 with the site chosen in part due to its close proximity to Essendon. Notably, one of the first aircraft to land at the new site was Air Force One in 1967 during a visit of US President Lyndon Johnson. The landing was at Essendon before flying empty the short distance to Tullamarine and taking off from there with the runway being capable of carrying the aircraft with a full fuel load. Work on the terminals continued into the late 1960s with international flights transferred to the new airport in July 1970 and domestic flights from the two main operators Ansett and Trans-Australian Airlines (TAA) in June 1971. At the same time the MMBW and Country Roads Board constructed the Tullamarine Freeway with the outer section from Essendon to Tullamarine Airports built by the CRB and opening by 1968. The inner section from Essendon to Flemington Road was officially opened in early 1970 with the section south of Bell Street constructed by MMBW.
As opened the airport had separate departure and arrivals levels with gates on three main wings from one terminal building set apart 45° from each other:
• International gates in the centre heading north west;
• Domestic gates for Ansett to the left heading west; and
• Domestic gates for TAA to the right heading north.
This film shows the terminal as it appeared in the 1970s and 80’s with the observation decks as they existed at the time. The main and largest one was a two level deck in front of the international wing. It was built as main lower level in two sections facing the main departure floor, plus an upper level over the international gate access. The upper level was accessed by stairs from each side of the lower level. At the time there was coin entry to the decks with turnstyles located at the entrances. These shots are largely taken from the left hand side of the lower part of this deck showing aircraft from the international and Ansett domestic gates. The deck was removed as part of a refurbishment and major expansion of the international wing between 1991 and 1993. The deck area is now effectively inside the terminal in what was called ‘Sky Plaza’- a mixture of retail shops and food outlets.
A smaller higher level deck was located over the TAA gates- Government-owned TAA was renamed Australian Airlines in 1986 and then merged with Qantas as its domestic service in 1992 with gradual rebranding soon after with progressive privatisation later in the 1990’s. Another smaller balcony and enclosed deck existed over the Ansett gates with Ansett - later under ownership of Air New Zealand, collapsing in September 2001 in the face of high costs and competition from new low cost carriers. One of the carriers Virgin Blue (now Virgin Australia) expanded to a full service carrier and took over the Ansett terminals. The last of the decks closed was the one over the TAA/Qantas Domestic wing in the early 2000’s although both the high level ones over the domestic wings still exist.
