Mellbreak (512m) - Lake District, UK
First of many, we hope... We arrived at Buttermere on long May weekend where we were welcomed by a thunderstorm followed by the stunning sunset over Runnderdale lake and the Mellbreak hill. Seeing the mountain from this perspective, we were left with no other choice but to climb it the very next day.

Lake District - The Western Fells - Mellbreak & Hen Comb
It's Wednesday 18th March 2015 and day three of myself and Dave's penultimate trip to the Lake District with regards to completing our 214 Wainwright Lakeland Summits Challenge. Though we had planned a day off with the weather being so good we decided to enjoy Mellbreak and Hen Comb in the Western fells giving us fantastic views of all the fells around Crummock Water as well as Loweswater and Buttermere. A fantastic Scree ascent and beautiful scenery add to what Wainwright describes as a Grand way to the top.
Over the past 8 years the Fat Boys have been helping a man achieve his dream of completing the 214 'Wainwrights' listed in his Pictorial Guides to the Lake District. Dave Galloway from Southend-on-Sea in Essex and now age 75 only just recovered from surgery following two bouts of Cancer. That coupled with other obstacles often put in his way, such as chronic cramps, blisters and awful crippling gout have not deterred him from making sure he makes the most of being given a second crack at life.
On this site we have documented in video every fell that Dave has conquered. The completion of his dream is near, watch it unfold on this YouTube site. Hope you enjoy this next small part of his challenge.
Music is by Gandalf with 'Take me gently across the water' followed by Davol and 'Truth 2010'.
Enjoy and thanks for viewing. Graham

Rannerdale Farm - Crummock Water - Buttermere - Mellbreak - 2018
I've spent many summers at Rannerdale Farm and as such love the family, the farm and the area so much! I managed to get a decent day of sunshine on 7th May 2018 and headed off to get the footage I've desired for many ears. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. The footage is in 4K, so make sure you adjust your browser accordingly!
Ironically enough, on the day I shot the footage I had no intention of going to the farm. However the Law Of Attraction kicked in and as I was stood half way up one of the fells flying the drone, Ray (the local farmer) turned up on his quad. Great to see him so well and another great conversation from the wise old man! Plus his sheep dog didn't bite me this time... :)
Mellbreak is a hill in the Western part of the English Lake District. Despite being surrounded on all sides by higher fells (the Loweswater Fells, the High Stile Ridge and the Grasmoor Group), it stands in isolation. It is surrounded on three sides by a moat of deep marshy land, and on the east side by the lake of Crummock Water. The fell forms a partnership with the lake, running parallel to it, falling sheer into it, and regularly providing the backdrop for pictures of it. Although the south top is slightly higher, at 512 m (1,680 ft) it is the north top (509 m, 1,670 ft) that is the better summit, being rocky and situated on the top of the crags that make up the north face of the fell. Both carry substantial cairns, that of the true summit being on grass. The views are good from both summits, a consequence of Mellbreak's isolation and great relative height. The north top brings the Solway Firth into view, but otherwise the differences are mainly confined to the foreground. Grasmoor and Rannerdale Knotts look impressive across the lake, an unexpected glimpse of the Helvellyn range seen behind!
Mellbreak & Great Borne, Lake District - 4 April 2015
A circular walk of almost 10 miles, starting at the village of Loweswater, the route starts with a steep climb up the north ridge of Mellbreak. It then continues along the ridge before descending towards Scale Force, here the route goes off-piste and climbs to Starling Dodd and then onto Great Borne with views of Ennerdale below. From Great Borne the return leg is made via Hen Comb.

Haystacks circular from Buttermere, Wainwright's favourite
An ascent of Haystacks from Buttermere in the Lake District. Although only 597 metres tall and not a mountain by uk standards it is every bit as challenging as the highest fells in the area. This circular walk also visits innominate tarn where Alfred Wainwright's ashes are scattered.
