Oregon Camping Trip ~ Melrose Vineyards ~ Wine, River and the Dreaded Bird Deterrent Cannons!
Join us on our visit to Melrose Vineyards in Roseburg, Oregon. We arrived at a winery fav in Roseburg in the afternoon ~ perfect for wine tasting in their beautiful tasting room, enjoying a glass of Pinot Noir on their patio and watching our dog have a meltdown! The bird deterrent cannons and fake rapture sounds were turning her into a shaking mess. We struggled through it enough to enjoy a fabulous wine tasting and walk down to the river to cool off. We enjoyed a night here courtesy of our membership with Harvest Hosts.

Willamette Valley Vineyards, Oregon
As part of our participation in the Wine Tourism Conference, held in Portland in November 2013, we opted in for the final event: a wine and food pairing dinner at Willamette Valley Vineyards. This was also the 4th winery we've visited in our project to visit a winery in all 50 states.
The winery, founded by Jim Bernau in 1983 and now celebrating its 30th anniversary, is making the tasting experience the main focus of customer visits, believing that wines should be tasted with food. We were the first group, the dress rehearsal if you will, of the newly built space. With a commercial kitchen and a demonstration area including wood burning oven, plenty of great food is sure to be had.

Wineries are consistently receiving awards for their wines, which is drawing people from all over the country to get a taste of the regions grapes. On September 28, Kriselle Cellars opened its tasting room up in White City. The company moved from Washington State, because of the Southern Oregon grapes. For Del Rio Winery, Winemaker Jean-Michel Jessiauee, the region needs to continue to build its skills in harvesting grapes and that will keep people coming for miles around.

IDTT Wine 465: Ken Wright Went Looking for Aroma
Ken Wright is the founder and winemaker of Ken Wright Cellars, based in Carlton, Oregon.
Ken discusses his work with Dick Graff in the 1970s, and then explains why he decided to move from California to Oregon in the 1980s to pursue winemaking in Oregon. He gives a thorough explanation of the different rock types found in state, and the attributes that different sites bring to a resulting wine. He also goes into depth in explaining his own winemaking evolution, from working at Panther Creek, to starting Ken Wright Cellars in 1994. Along the way, Ken makes several connections between the winemaking and the farming, and explains how one is often the result of the other. In particular, he talks quite a bit about the phenomenon of reduction in a wine, something he tries to prevent. Ken further describes several key vintages for Oregon Pinot Noir, discussing the attributes of those years and their impact on his own thinking.

How Richard Sommer Started Oregon Wine Industry in 1961
In Chapter 4 of 7, Willamette Valley winemaker Patty Green discusses her mentor, Richard Sommer, an Oregon winemaking visionary, pioneer, and Hillcrest Vineyard founder. Sommer provided then-novice winemaker Green non-traditional mentoring and support during her late-80s Hillcrest tenure. Sommer, who passed away the afternoon of this interview, filmed July 28th, 2009, influenced many by helping others, embracing nature, and building Oregon's wine vinifera - Old World wine grape focus - from nothing starting with a 1961 Umpqua Valley planting.
